As AllTrails lists this route as an 'out-and-back' and we summited Chaplains, we thought we could be able to descend via Precipice. After attempting to descend for about 0.2mi, it seemed unwise to continue because of the grade and ice forming over the steep face...let alone going down the iron rungs. While signs warn that this isn't recommend to descend from Chaplains via Precipice, the app's distinction of an 'out-and-back' gives a contrary and potentially dangerous impression.

Great trail with amazing views like others have said, however I'd note that it's best to take the trail up from the Loop Route, then up to Beehive Summit. With the ledges and iron rungs, It could be challenging to descend the eastern face from the summit

Exhilarating trail. Tough in some sections but not impossible. First rung&ladder challenge is the toughest... if you can do this one, you can do the rest. In the colder months, leave plenty of time because there’s ice in many areas. For a short hike with a relatively small increase in elevation, this trail packs a punch. Definitely can’t do this just once!

Nice and easy quick hike! Very fast in and out, and it wasn’t too busy. (Thoigh it was completely dogged in when I went so that may be why)

I went up the north ridge and down the south (no roads go near the south trail down, and you can catch a shuttle). Actually went up and down barefoot, and still did it all in under four hours. If you’re in half decent shape it’s a breeze.

On the way up cars pass very close by several times but that didn’t stop a deer from running across the trail! It’s really crowded on top, and as you get nearer there are lots of people who walked on from the road. It’s a bit lame, but not enough to take away from the hike and views.

I highly recommend going down the south side rather than doubling back. The scenery changes, I passed less than 5 people (and about 20+on north ridge), and it goes straight into one of the campgrounds.

This trail is amazing. Be careful during rain tho.

Beautiful hike! was a little rough in places, but had a lot of beautiful stops to rest my legs in the way up. followed the blue markings and a beautiful stream. had to be careful because of the leaves and rocks were a tad slippery. amazing view at the end, very much worth the hike. ended up watching the sunset later on. amazing views!

This is the best trail I have ever done! The most beautiful trail for the entire time of the hike and even more gorgeous at the top!

I would do this trail again in a heartbeat!

Precipice made Beehive seem like child's play. The beginning of the trail starts off with some pretty cool boulder hopping. You have nice views within 10 minutes. The rest of the trail is a series of switchbacks, ladders, steps, and bridges. You're on cliff faces the majority of the way up. I felt safe, but wet rocks/rain could make for a pretty dangerous ascent. We hiked up and over, down the Orange/Black trail to the road, and followed the road back to the Precipice lot. We did this after sunrise on Cadillac and saw only 2 couples. Awesome hike during peak foliage!

Hiked the Beehive trail and connected to the bowl to make a big loop. Beautiful, crystal clear lake. You'll want to bring something to swim in!

Did this trail in the evening when it was extremely foggy, I'm sure there would have been great views if it wasn't for the fog. A great trail otherwise, wild blueberry bushes are everywhere. You are following blue arrows painted on the rock

Incredible hike with and incredible views. Towards the top you have to hold on to rails that have been put in the rocks. I don't recommend this trail for people who are afraid of heights

Fun hike, a must do if in the park

Incredible views. Nice cardio getting to the top. Had to use a few metal rungs here and there.

Absolutely my favorite hike in the park. It was gorgeous!

Lots of views, lots of up, and in the fall you don’t see many people going this way, add mileage starting from camp ground :)

Great hike with amazing views and lots of elevation changes

amazing trail..

This hike will get your heart racing...but it is worth the amazing views and the pride you have for yourself for completing it! Must do this if visiting Acadia!

This was a beautiful trail with so many awesome views at each level. Perfect for fall leaf peeping and photography. Not a difficult hike. The only disappointment was the road was next to the trail at points which took away from the nature. This is a”must do’ hike.

Really enjoyed this trail. Good way to spend a half day. DEFINITELY do St Sauveur up then Valley Peak trail to loop up with Acadia Mountain trail, then go down the less fun part of Acadia Mountain trail (but also easier to descend because there are steps down) to finish the loop. You get the better views on the way up and a better hike this way. You can do this by starting at the Acadia Mountain parking lot then taking St Sauveur trail to start or park at the St Sauveur lot and take the Ledge trail first (the latter option just adds distance and can be slippery when wet)

Some reviews make this sound way scarier than it is. I also get queasy with heights. Yes you need to watch your footing and climb some rungs but it is a fun, short trail. We went as the sun began to rise, it was totally empty (week of Oct 14), took us about half hr to get to the top and we had time to settle before the sun peaked out above the ocean. Definitely recommend this over the crowds on Cadillac Mountain (which we also did) for a sunrise!!!

This was such a fun hike. We took about an hour to reach the summit but this was only because we stopped to take a lot of amazing pics. The colors during autumn made it so much better. Definitely worth it.

Nice and short, not too strenuous. We hit the summit in a half hour. Several of great photo opps with the fall colors

A wonderful hike. Mainly over rocks. We did it together with my family incl. a 20 months old in a carrier. Stopped many times. Made it up in 2 hours and down in about 1.5 hours. The gift shop up top sold hot chocolates, which we loved as it was cold and windy on this October day.

Took about 2:15 to finish round trip at a fairly brisk pace. Easy all the way up. A little towards the end but nothing strenuous for any normal human. Great views during ridge hike until to get to human parade at the top.

S’ok. Fairly easy all the way up if you have any climbing background. Just a simple scramble at best.

Beautiful trail gradual ascent. Follow the blue blazes

Views are awesome on top. Going up / down from / to Echo Lake Beach provides the experience of climbing some iron ladders:-)
