It was ok. The boardwalk part we finished in 20 minutes. Didn’t see much.
Gravel trail.. nothing much to see..
Nice little walk along the canal. Lots of waterfowl and assorted birds. Not spectacular, but peaceful enough in the gravel road for a good stroll.
I’ve done this trail a couple of times. The gravel part and the boardwalk. We saw a few gators in the swamp/river that runs along side the gravel so that was pretty cool but yeah not that exciting.
The most exciting part is the boardwalk - the rest walk on the gravel by the bayou is really boring and not much to see.
Birds, birds, birds! I was delighted to see so many different species of birds. A large group of hawks circled me for almost a mile. I watched a group of blacks birds chase an enormous owl from a tree. The trail was more like just walking a levee with a large canal at some distance to one side & swamp land to the other side. Tons of birds, tons of butterflies & interesting insects, & alligators. I would definitely skip the last mile, unless you’re out mainly for exercise. The last mile ends just before a noisy highway with fewer wildlife out and a pretty monotonous stretch of greenery. Not much to see for that part.
Nice walk. Boardwalk interesting. Gravel trail not too adventorous but a good walk.
A wooden boardwalk through wetlands provide great access to a unique ecology, though limestone out and back path comprise the majority of the mileage in the park.
Easy trail mostly with gravel. Some viewpoints are very nice and you can see widlife all along.
Didnt go the full 7, but beautiful hike. Lots of wildflowers and birds!
Good trail for viewing wildlife but the gravel trail can be hard ro deal with.
If you are interested in seeing a swamp - this is a good choice. The boardwalk has good signage explaining the flora and fauna. It has spots of real beauty, but mostly flat, green and not a lot of visual diversity. In the summer there are sand flies and an acrid ammonia smell. We did see several rabbits and many water birds. Remember to bring bug spray!
I'm giving this trail 3 stars even though I thoroughly enjoyed it because it won't be for everyone. If you're looking for ooh and aah views every step this is not the one for you. As other reviewers have noted, it's an out and back along a gravel road on the levee. Going outwards, there are some nice marsh views on the right and glimpses of a bayou on the left (you'll have to get off into the weeds to see it closer). The trail ends unceremoniously, without even a sign, at I-10. Two deer flashed their tails at me right near there, besides that there were some birds and lots of butterflies. There are no benches along the way until you get back to the short boardwalks, where there are many. On a hot sunny day, water and a hat are an absolute must for this trail. If you are out of shape (like me) this is a great workout hike (about 3 hours). I also personally feel that this kind of hike really makes you appreciate the intensely scenic hikes even more.
I wish there were more actual "trails" and boardwalks. The rock road doesn't cut it.
Trail has a pretty view of the lagoon in places. I have had an alligator cross my path. The path has little to no shade. In the summer, come prepared with a hat and plenty of water.
Other than the short board walk, the rocky road is quite boring
