Want something more exciting than cowls mountain this is a butt kicker. You will fill it in your calves and it’s not going out that’ll get you. The way Back feels never ending. It may be a short hike but it sure feels long. And once you get back the end of piles you have to go back down cowls but that’s easy. All for all it’s a great hike for intermediate hikers and adventurous people I like. Remember to take adamant water.

Went 2 days after heavy rain. Our first rime. Surfer recommended going barefoot, he was right.! super slippery at bottom by the rope. Took Gliderport stairs back and the ridge back to HoChi Minh. Views are amazing. I agree w moderate rating. Real fun, oh yeah, for those new to area Black’s beach is one of the best breaks in area and the North side is a swimsuit optional beach.

So 1st part of this trail is just a steep but short hiking trail. The rest of it is for climbers only. While the visitors center heavily discourages bouldering and blazing your own trail, many have done it *cough cough for thrills, and at the top theres a cool circle of rocks that people have put together. You could get to the nearest peak from there, but again it requires trail blazing so be careful (snakes) and mindful (there are unofficial trails, but minimize your foot imprint and dont trample, also dont smoke ANYTHING) *not that I have smoked in mission trails, just seen it and it makes me shudder thinking of one cigarette butt or flying pipe ember can just set a whole place ablaze, so just dont!!!

Several things I love.
1) Typically not crowded
2) Many paths to each peak which offer their own delights
3) tons of thriving vegetation and wildlife
4) Some paths can be a bit of a challenge and leg burner
5) Some pretty cool hangout spots along the way that are peaceful and secluded

Downer: at times south fortuna is crowded at stairs, luckily several paths and theres north fortuna, significantly less crowded.

I once hiked down North Fortuna after dark without a headlamp, by myself, with several paths intersecting. DONT DO THAT scary as heck.

oh, leave a gift of poetry at North Fortuna too

I did this hike several times and enjoyed it very much. Assess from all four different directions.

My first visit was in the summer, it was hot and trail was in tact - had good fun. My second time was after rains, the trail has become little more difficult than before because of the erosion. But I would say the fun element of this trail has increased because of the erosion. A shoe with good grip is a must have.

The feeling when you reach the peak after climbing the stairs is pretty great

Awesome workout. Great view. I recommend ample water, a snack for the top and a lite packable wind jacket for nov/dec/jan/ feb - stairs were awesome, but trail is best on a weekday morning ( less people)

Short but sweet! This is a fun trail that’s pretty technical. We went at 8:00am on Friday and only saw a few other hikers on the trail and a few rock climbers at the crest doing their thing. The trail is quite narrow though so if it was crowded I don’t think I would have enjoyed it much.

Good workout, decent views for so close to downtown SD. Pretty boulders and stairs to climb. VERY crowded.

Short hike, but great views! saw some rock climbers. I wore my hiking boots because I was not sure what to expect, but glad that I did because there was lots of opportunities for a clumsy person like myself to roll their ankles haha. Took less than an hour to complete, which allowed us to take in the view and have a snack!

very sad to say...no clear begining... so crowded I could not even enjoy it...for me not a fun adventure

took the north entrance to the south and walked back to my car since it was in between open gate hours took 2 pups and we all had a good time

Nice hike with some challenging sections. The six mile loop is a combination of a bunch of different paths so I recommend running this app during your hike. You can’t just zone out and walk/run the whole thing. When you come out of the parking lot, there is a cool bridge over a canyon. You turn left once across the bridge to get to The Fortuna loop. If you want to go counterclockwise, the path off to the right is roughly a hundred yards after turning left from the bridge. If you turn right from the bridge, there are some very steep repeated climbs for a warm up.

I did it counterclockwise and enjoying hustling up the long run of steps. I definitely preferred going up those versus down. It took me just over 90 minutes to complete. There are spectacular views from both peaks. I was fine starting at 8am on a weekday in mid-November with a 12-16oz bottle of water. I passed maybe five people going in my direction and about the same going the other way.

The views are amazing but this is a very busy trail. Going down it definitely seems easy and the trail does go all the way down to the ocean with beautiful views all the way. I definitely didn’t realize how steep it was until I was in the way back up. The smooth sandy trail is too set and carved out for my taste but I assumed it was for safety and preservation I would definitely hike here again.

It was well kept and not highly trafficked.

A nice little jaunt that earns you a great ocean view at the end! It seemed more difficult than moderate and good hiking shoes are a must.

The trail head said prohibited entry?

Definitely more than a moderate. Wouldn't say it's an expert though. Went with shoes but some locals said not to use em. I'd say they would've made it harder in spots. Definitely not suitable for kids or dogs. Also be careful, there's a nude beach right down the beach from the end of the trail.

Fantastic views. Moderately challenging depending on the level of sun and heat you're encountering. Bring more water than you need and do the hike clockwise so that the heavy incline (on the S.Fortuna side), is actually a decline.

I wouldn't reccomend the north trail for mt biking unless you like hike !bike

Super fun! I lived it

Great hike any time of the year!

Awesome trail!

Good workout, lots of up and down. We went counterclockwise and hit the stairs going up. The trails are marked with changing names. Hard to get lost, but easy to make a wrong turn. Great view from both peaks.

Second time on this hike. It can be sketchy at points. Great short hike.

Good mid range trail, but for a beginner trail runner, like myself, it is a doozy, especially for first 2+ miles. Be ready for a workout. My only gripe is the trail is poorly marked later in the loop as there are many junctions and I spent a lot of time guessing wrong. I would go to my AllTrail app but it was having it's issues (or at least my GPS was.)
