Beautiful this time of year with the leaves changing color! It was a little confusing on where to go sometimes, so download the map if you can! Follow any arrows you see on the trees as well.

Pretty hike only 20 minute drive from Lyons.
Great views of reservoir and Longs Peak at the halfway point.
2.5 hours total.

in the past we used this trail a lot. However, a couple of years ago, it started being patrolled daily by the city of Boulder animal control ticketing people for dogs swimming and being off leash. In the newspaper, they bragged of being there pretty much all of the time. It is under the control of the city of Boulder so those rules apply, and are very different from the Boulder County rules we were all following. it was just a convenient little county park. Too bad it became a highly - policed place to play with your dogs.

It was ok. Got there around 9am plenty of parking.

gorgeous trail. When you finish the sleepy lion, take the hummingbird switchback trail for a beautiful walk around the reservoir.

More of a nature walk than a hike.

Waaay too crowded. Saw a guy who thought it was cool to bring his gun to the reservoir. Motorboats are a big distraction if you’re looking for some peaceful nature. Again, the gun didn’t help things.

Easy to get off track near trailhead due to multiple paths going different directions.
Lots of dog walkers. Get's more secluded the farther you get from trailhead making for a nice peaceful hike or run.

Does have a pretty view, but it is absolutely swarmed with bugs unfortunately. The bugs made it hard to enjoy the walk even with bug spray on.

A pleasant family hike with beautiful views at the top of the trail overlooking the reservoir and mountain peaks beyond. Nice rock outcropping sniffer a perfect place to sit and enjoy an appreciated, nourishing repast with an exquisite view. The last half of the loop is a fire road which wasn’t as inviting of nature as the Lion trail on the way up. Lovely, nevertheless!

Nice open trail through the foothill shrub forests until you get to a higher up area with cool views of the dam/reservoir. Plenty of parking even when its super busy.

Sleepy Lion great for the small pup!

My wife and daughter and dog had a beautiful hike.

Great trail with beautiful views!

Great trail! Arrived at 8am on a Saturday and the lot was less than half full. Mostly full by the time we left around 11am. The reservoir was awesome. Great hike with the dog. I’ll be back to trail run!

Great trail! Make sure you do the sleepy lion trail up. When you hit Hull ranch do not go that way go to the right where you will find the summit of the trail and a gorgeous view of the lake. We almost missed it and went the Hull route. There’s not a lot of shade on the last 2 miles back so be prepared for that.

Great distance and elevation for beginners who want to get some incline!

Beautiful views, well kept trails. Fairly easy hike, although I just wore tennis shoes and would definitely recommend doing it in trail shoes. *There is a $7 day use fee that is paid at a station in the parking lot. Credit cards accepted.*

Beautiful trail. Pretty easy but the farther you go in the more rocky it gets. Went to the end of the laughing horse loop & turned around due to ominous looking weather. I gotta go back and go farther next time.

Absolutely gorgeous little trail. Took my 3 year old and it was a little tough for her. Found some not so steep little side trails that take you right down to the water. My kiddo loved splashing around. Not many people for a Friday afternoon in the summer. Would def go back.

This trail is dope. Beautiful views, waterfalls, it’s fun to hike, and there are great places to take photos for you IG

Great hiking close to town. Beautiful views and some challenging spots that make it enjoyable.

Took my wife to start her getting into shape for more strenuous hikes; moving here to Lyons from NY. About 1/4 mile from damn we encountered a nice size black bear. My wife freaked a little and turned around, couldn’t convince her to keep going. So beautiful a trail, I’m going back.

Such an incredibly beautiful trail! I love that it is dog friendly, because my pooch absolutely loves to hike. We love trails that have water, and this trail has a river that you follow all the way to a reservoir. We also saw a black bear on our hike! Thank goodness it was on the other side of the creek from us. Very neat place.

Sleepy Lion trail is beautiful - stunning views of the dam and Longs Peak, meadows with wildflowers, morning shade in the trees and we had it practically to ourselves on a Wednesday morning. I brought it down to 4 stars because to do the loop you hike back on a dirt road which is nice enough next to the creek but not 5 stars.

Dog owners please be cautious! Unfortunately last night our dog was bit by a rattlesnake in the tall grass around Coot Lake. We LOVE this area and go there 3-4 times a week and never had an issue until last night.

Nice trail. We didn’t do the hummingbird switchbacks today because we were looking for a quick hike. Saving it for next time. From the sleepy lion loop you get a nice view of the reservoir from up above. You also get to walk along the river. Not too difficult. Some steep parts but plenty of flat stretches as well. The sky did turn dark behind us and we heard thunder while on the way back while the sky ahead was perfectly blue. There are bathrooms just past the parking lot. Obey the rules—there was a ranger very vigilantly watching.

Like some of the other reviewers have pointed out, don’t go here if you are looking for a hike. But, if you’re looking for a great 5k trail run on a nicely kept gravel path this place is perfect. I live nearby and run here often with my dog. Be sure to check out the smaller food paths down to the creek, and check out he nature center too!
