Local Hikes to check out Map

tougher than moderate in my book. was very wet with leaves made it more challenging.

Beautiful hike. Great views in the way up. the summit was surrounded by tree unfortunantly. But very worth the hike for all the views!

I have a deep personal connection to this mountain. Climbed it many times, when it would permit me to. I attempted it solo in January a few years back, but no luck. Got my truck stuck on the side of the road right by the trailhead (big drop on the shoulder of the road! Bring chains and a friend with a winch!), and then lost the trail in 6 feet of snow. Trail is unmarked except for the wear pattern on the ground itself, so don't attempt unless you or someone you're with knows the way. The site of the former cabin is about halfway, and is now a campsite for tents. From there the steepness about doubles. One of the most underrated hikes in Maine, and a personal favorite for sure.

One more point - the true summit of Big Spencer lies about 1/4 mile farther down the ridge from the communications station. Getting there requires some serious bushwhacking. I attempted it but realized it was futile after struggling to get only 20 feet off the trail. Wear long sleeves and bring an axe or machete! I hear at the summit there is some flagger's tape and a PVC pipe with a notebook inside, to serve as a register. Good luck!

Enjoyed this trail October 27th, 2018 with my dog Sonny, my daughter Brianna and her pup Piper...it had snowed during the week so the further we climbed the more snow we found...about 3 inches...made some rocks on the steep incline a little challenging..pretty hike with the trees covered in snow..marked out spot at the cabin...made it to the scenic overlook, beautiful!! It was windy and cold, a storm was brewing so we turned back. A bit of a challenge but worth it!!

Nice place for views and a easy walk

Great hike! Short, sweet, easy and great views. Tried to loop over to Maiden's Cliff and that was hard to find, but gorgeous hiking all through the park.

Easy trail and great views for fall foilage and carriage roads. would reccomend renting or bringing a bike for the carriage roads.

A fun, moderate hike with nice views, especially on a fall day like today.

A good rewarding, moderate, hike. Today was my second time climbing it. The views going up and from the scenic outlook were amazing. Cloud cover prevented most of the views from the top.

Such a peaceful place. Trails are easy to moderate. Fall views of the foliage is beautiful!

Incredible. Just hiked this on Saturday October 6th. Absolutely beautiful. Ran into only two other hikers the entire hike. Must have spent an hour at the top. Took me 3.5 hours counting that and didn’t find the trail strenuous at all, and I’m not in the shape I used to be!

amazing hike... 1 of my favorites... beautiful fall day too... couldnt ask for a better hike

nice trail lots of rocks. nice view...

The view at the top was worth the Hike! My wife and I enjoyed it!

Pretty walking loop trail

Great hike.

Steep is an understatement.
Not marked well is an understatement.
Level moderate is an understatement for a lot of this trail. Marked as a five * because of the challenge, the quarry, and for the beauty. No need to go to the tower as it is a big disappointment.

My bulldog and I had a great hike. we met several friendly people at the top. A steep climb in but the views from the top were well worth it. A great set of memories!

Not a hard trail but def a 5 star hike in my book!

Lots of rocky pathways and mostly horizontal. If you're coming from Megunticook, it's mostly downhill. Be careful with descending, it's easy to trip and fall. Still, the rocks are great and as long as you take it slow there is tons of awesome foliage to check out.

The ocean lookout view is incredible. Pretty tiring walk for a new hiker, but still very rewarding. The actual summit doesn't have much of a view, but it's extremely quiet and very serene. There are so many areas to go from the top, so many different trails and paths.

Great hike, lots of fun. Camden is an awesome place

It is a tough hike but with rewarding 360 views. Much better and secluded than the busy Mt.Kineo.

Not really difficult for most of the trail but does require hands feet and butt in some places :-)

great trail, 2 adults, 2 kids (9&11), one dog. flattish to start, then pretty steep up the east side of the mtn. great views in several parts.

four of us, kids 9 & 10 and a tibetian terrier did the hike in a few hours. a good trail, nice views, moderate traffic, but everyone friendly

Great trail, shady and picturesque. Fantastic for teens and dogs.

Beautiful hike! Amazing views from the top of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Tons of broken glass at the top, presumably from the old fire tower, so be careful if you bring dogs! Very steep on the second mile!! I’d rate this moderate-strenuous for the last mile in itself

Wouldn't rate it as hard- we got up to the top in 45 minutes, and though there were some steep portions it wasn't anything beyond an average hiker's ability. The views were absolutely amazing (can see Acadia and the ocean, the mountains around Tunk Lake, and even Katahdin if you bring binoculars) and the summit was flat and expansive enough that you could comfortably eat lunch and relax before your descent. There's a whole mess of low blueberry bushes at the top, too!

Overall a great, shorter hike that pays out in beautiful views. Would definitely recommend if you want a fun hike but don't want to commit to a full day affair! I think we ended up doing it in about 2 hours with a nice, relaxed snack break at the top.

Hiked again today with full 30lb pack. We found the old ATV/fire road on the left as you head up toward quarry. Taking this allows you to avoid the quarry. Off the fire road, there is a trail on the right marked by orange flagging tape. This is the trail to the top. As others have said, the trail is steep from the get go. It continues this way for @ 0.5 miles past the quarry area, then gently climbs up and down rest of way. Beautiful view at top if you go around the building & tower area. You can see the entire Penoscot Bay. Gorgeous!
