I'm a big fan of this trail for biking. It's relatively level, well maintained and not terribly trafficked. There are a few crossings, but cars tend to stop for you, even when they have the right of way.

I'm not sure how the AT app determines the level ratings, but this one definitely should be "Easy," not "Moderate." The terrain is mostly level with few obstacles other than a few mud puddles. Good for a walk in the woods but not "hiking." BTW, the map on AT is lackluster, bordering on useless.

I hiked the outer loop counterclockwise yesterday, 11/7. It was very muddy at the start because of the recent rain but the rest of the trail wasn't bad. Overall it was a nice hike right in the city and I very much enjoyed it. Will got back and complete the little but the inner trail that I didn't get to.

I went after work on a weekday around 3pm and it was mostly empty save for some trail runners here and there. I mostly walked alone the entire time.

Roosevelt. Outdoors. Perfection near the city. Also saw a crew of corgis as we entered the island : ).

This is a nice relatively flat paved trail. W & OD is well maintained and safe (patrolled by Park Police) and free of automotive traffic accept for street crossings at which I found motorists to be courteous. The trail is perfect for long distance training rides.

a nice trail out of the way of the city. very flat and a pretty simple, if ultimately peaceful walk. a little hard to get to without a car... walk about 10 minutes from the Rosslyn metro station

A trail oasis in the middle of the city.

Great location to start/end a long run. Started here and then ran across Teddy Roosevelt bridge and into Georgetown. Came back and finished with another lap around Teddy Roosevelt island. This is one of my favorite monuments.

The biking trails look like they are no longer maintained or haven't been in a long time and are in terrible condition. There is also poison ivy everywhere on the trail. Probably best to avoid for biking.

It’s a lovely trail, very easy and close to dc. Excellent for weekend mornings, but get there early because parking is limited.

A great trail for running!

Great way to leave the city for a few moments. Great tribute to Teddy.

I didn't like it for hiking, most of the three miles of it that I did was paved and really meant for biking but even then the scenery is a lot of roadside growth and trash with traffic noise throughout most of it. You get some good looks at the river but the trash does get in the way.

A few slower spots crossing the stream but for the majority you can run without too much technical stuff

has some nice swamp areas and birding but the traffic noise is a bit of a distraction

Nice oasis in the city with actual trails to run. Wasn’t too busy for a weekday evening.

Really great and less frequently traveled trail. Going over the bridge gives you a great view of the Potomac and there is a statute of Teddy Roosevelt on the island. Very easy hike, gets muddy after rain however. You can go swimming at certain points but take caution; it's swim at your own risk.

Good urban escape

Nice place to walk and some ok mountain biking!

I thought this place was cool! Some people were playing in the fountains that weren’t running... so that was freaking weird- but overall a really good place to take my dog on a walk and let her swim a bit. Super easy place to walk around. Probably one of the lesser known places to go in the area, there’s a huge statue of Teddy Roosevelt people liked to take pictures with. I’ll definitely head back soon.

I really enjoyed hiking this trail. You definitely need to watch your step as you cross the run. I look forward to returning soon.

Airplanes frequent overhead creating a lot of noise. It’s very slippery and muddy after big rains.
Great for bird watching. Lots of Redwings and mallards.

Teddy Roosevelt Island houses one of the lesser-known monuments and is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life without ever leaving the city. This is an extremely easy, flat, paved path with a few through-trails in-between the major loop. Experienced hikers who are looking for a challenge would find this trail boring, whereas tourists looking for some relief or those looking for a leisurely stroll would love this area. It is fairly deserted during regular business hours, but can get busy on the weekend.

Today was the hottest day of the year thus far at 85 degrees. The Martha Custis Trail is 100% paved, which means convection and radiant heat coming up from the pavement, while solar heat from the sun beams down — it’s like being in an oven. I haven’t adapted to running in hot weather this year yet. So, I knew that this run was going to suck.

I started out at about 11 am, and what was planned to be a trail running activity turned into a day hike activity, fairly quickly. The heat was just too much trying to maintain a 10K pace. I ended up jogging and taking breaks often, the whole distance. Other than that the trail was great! Just beware of the many bikers. I ended up completing a total distance of 14 miles at 735 feet elevation gain, when you converge my two recordings.

I plan to start these runs earlier, like 15 minutes before the break of dawn or thereabout. The aim is better quality outings. I’ll bag this one and look to do better next time out.

Walked about the Theodore Roosevelt Island bridge entrance, my first time really exploring this area. The bridge over to the Island was closed today as a public safety precaution due to recent flooding in this area. My plan was to run around the island before running Martha Custis, but since I couldn't I just walked about taking pictures.

This is a pretty cool spot, and is also the location where you park for the Martha Custis Trail. The place was already swarming with people on a Sunday at about 10:30, so I advise doing things early, like 5-6 am on weekend visits. I will be returning.

Great way to respect a president who loved the outdoors! nice and quiet island, hike it to escape the craziness of DC, plus lots of wildlife
