This was my second backpacking trip. Backpacked to Little Jimmy, setup camp, and made our way to Mt. Islip. The hike was fun and moderate. It's far into the Los Angeles Forest and takes some time to get to the parking lot. It's a great trip if you want to get away from the city. The campgrounds are well maintained and have grills, but I wouldn't recommend using the restrooms. Just handle your business in nature!

It was an alright hike. Physically, it had its challenging moments, but nothing not unmanageable.

Because of its location and the high foot traffic, it felt less like an adventure and more like an orchestrated attraction...a la Disneyland.

Though I have to say, there were some very nice vistas

park in the dirt lot off Fullerton Rd...its free. I love how challenging this loop is but be cautious. Someone's car got broken into in the lot and on the trail around a bend was a huge rattlesnake! I saw 3 deer on my last hike here. Use the alltrails app. I got lost the first 2 times.

Love this trail! Great for hiking on hot summer days. The pine forest , high elevation, along with scenic vistas are fantastic.

This is a moderate to moderated + trail. The trail splits at one point and iyou can opt for a steeper grade hike for about .5 mile at this point.

There are several trail options at the summit... should you want to extend your hike.

Nice trail beautiful views

Went on a solo hike on a Sunday. it was difficult to find the trail, the directions on how to get there, from this app, are not accurate at all. I had to stop and Google it. Use this address: 2100 powder canyon trail. it will take to the trail head and the parking lot which is free and it was not busy or full at all. It is a dirt and gravel road and it is very uneven so if your car is low, you will hit some road underneath your car. The trail itself was fun. there are some spots that have plenty of shade but most of it was very open. there are alot of forks and different ways to go that take you to other trails. I stuck to the map and followed the app and GPS. it started to get kinda confusing towards the end but watch the GPS from the app and you'll be fine. plenty of inclines and it will challenge you!

Beautiful trail, lots to see even on a cloudy day! Split 5 litres of water between 2 fit adults, so don’t forget the H20 and ty to get on the trail early!

This was my first taste of backpacking! We went on a Friday and only one other car was in the parking lot! Basically had the whole campground to ourselves. We definitely over estimated our cardio ability and under estimated the difficulty of the trail, at least from the trailhead to Little Jimmy. It's definitely not for the out of shape. The mileage markers are wrong, so be prepared to feel like you're hiking much more than the distance on the sign posts. We stayed the night Friday night and went for an early hike to the peak around 7:30AM. Not too many people on the trail, but on the way back, closer to camp people were flooding in around 9:30AM. By 11:00AM the campground was pretty much full, so if you go on a Saturday, get there early! The spring was flowing, and it tasted amazing. Nice and cold! We filtered some of our water, and other times drank straight from it. I'd recommend filtering, because you could definitely see little bits in the water. 4 stars because it was so crowded early in the day and because of the BUGS. I got eaten alive! I was not prepared for that many bugs and the constant buzzing in my ear.

Smooth dirt path with plenty of shade spots the whole trail. Open at the top with amazing views all around.

Really enjoyed this ride. Takes you thru some beautiful & “hidden” parts of Fullerton. Would give it 5 stars ‘cept for the numerous walkers & runners, many with dogs and ear buds. Don’t assume others can hear you.

A warmer day than I expected but a really nice hike. A definite moderate trail, less crowded once you get past the campsites. Cross the 2 to reach the trailhead. Not a huge fan of how long it took to get to here (the time listed in your GPS of choice will be very accurate due to the windiness of the 2).

This is a strong 4 star hike...near Mount Baden-Powell and similar in many ways. Parking and the trailhead is on Hwy 2. We took the 210 to the 2 Hwy near La Canada Flintridge and it took us about 50 mins and 40 miles of twists and turns while sharing the road with motorcycles and high performance cars that are testing their cars handling. You will pass the parking area for Switzer Falls (see my review for that one) and you will pass the Red Box parking area you can use to do the Strawberry Peak hike (see my review haha) and still will need to continue on Angeles Crest Hwy for about 25 more minutes. When you reach the campground it gets a bit confusing with intersecting trails. Don't stop here, continue on for about 1.5 miles to reach the Mt. Islip peak. The 3rd mile is the steepest and you will gain about 550 ft and pass the 8,000 ft elevation level and come to a fork in the trail that is well marked and you will make a right to go about .2 miles to the peak. It was 3.2 miles to the peak and 6.4 miles RT. At the top is the ruins of a small structure, some concrete squares, and a plastic and metal box with some notebooks. There is no sign with the name and elevation of the peak but it is about 8,250 ft. above sea level. There are some great views, not quite as great as Baden-Powell. This is a moderate hike, definitely not hard. We completed the hike in 2.5 hrs with no running. There are parts that are exposed to the sun, but equal amounts that have shade. I loved that we only came across 6 total people while hiking. I just hate that it takes so long to get here and especially the amount of driving the incredibly curvy Hwy 2.

Nice parking lot with vault toilets, recreation pass required here. For me, three stars is a nice, easy-moderate uphill climb and I would probably do this one again in the fall, but explore farther along the trails to Little Jimmy and beyond. However, there is little shade on this stretch and no water. In June 2018, even starting this hike at 7:00AM proved to be immediately warm. This is a steady, uphill climb with short stretches of steep, particularly in the last 400 meters to the peak of the mountain with broad views on both sides of the mountain from the top. Good trail for fit dogs with only one observed and very small patch of foxtails, but bring plenty of water. At top, find a red soup can protecting a notepad and pen to sign your name and write a message to other hikers.

was a good hike. went early morning loved listening to the birds. very peaceful.

Great hike next door to me! I dig it just not when it’s 80° or higher! Main reason I always bring my dog and this hike in heat is no way enjoyable to her! It’s great to and gets the blood pumping just bring a hat and some H20! Stay safe my friends!

Took the day off from work to hike on the first day of summer. The trail conditions were really good. Especially loved the fact that I had the trail to myself. Be aware that there are lots of flying bugs this time of year, and the weather is much warmer so make sure to plan accordingly. I can't stress how important keeping oneself hydrated is to the enjoyment of this hike.

This trail it’s very good it has all kinds of terrain from gravel under a bridge, little dirt jumps to some good hills some are really cool it goes around neighborhoods and it’s a really fun trail the only downside it’s that you have to cross streets to keep staying on the trail other than that some times gets kind of crowded with people on some of the trails but that doesn’t bother me much. ( I see it like a challenging track)

The back side is well shaded recommend doing that half during the peak of that. We started mid day and went the backside to the front and it was not too hot by the time we were in the sun again.

The best trail for mountain biking

$6 parking cash only. There is a wells fargo close by.

Had a difficult time finding the exact trail (apparently this trail is not one of their trails... It was "man-made"..... That's what I was told) so we ended up just going on a random trail that offered a variety of physical challenges. I still had fun! Not much shade. Bring lots if water and snacks. We saw lots of squirrels and bunnies!

My first time and i enjoy it, looking forward for the next trail to try

Good trail! Some decent inclines in the 1st section, then we hit shade and a cool breeze for a long stretch before another hill towards the end. We went in June on an 80 degree day. Make sure you have water and watch for snakes.

Great challenge with all the inclines, nice stretch of shaded areas and light traffic.

The Mother Trail

Difficult hike. Continuous switchbacks and elevation. You really don't get any sections where you are not at an incline. The trail is easy to follow although it does narrow a few times and I felt a bit uneasy. The closer you get to the top the steeper the sections. The day I hikedbthisbpeak was a beautiful day and could not have asked for better weather. I did however feel the affect big the wind bad I got closer to the summit. My hands especially did get cold and were shaking at one point. I recommend taking cold weather gear with you. At the very least, have it available. I didn't have gloves and I only had a cheap wind breaker jacket. I was pretty miserable at the top and definitely wish I'd taken gloves and a sweater/jacket. The view from the top is spectacular. Bring plenty of water, snacks and cold weather prep even if the conditions don't seem to call for it. This is a difficult hike. I'd recommend training and building up your stamina before attempting so that you could enjoy it. Good luck!!
