Hard Hike up but amazing when you get up there like you are in a different world. The hike back down is the worse though. Best hike ever!

My son and I took this trail while in the Livingston area. We loved it.

It’s a hard hike up to the top but it is very much worth the effort.

As other reviewers have stated, this is a gradual steady climb to the top (meaning completely downhill on the way out). The trail was moderately crowded with hikers and dogs. The bugs were insane--flies and mosquitos all over the shore of Emerald Lake. Fishing was great, lots of grayling and cutthroat. We camped near the lake and were disappointed to have multiple groups walk through our camp between 8 and 9 PM. There were probably close to 10 different groups camping that night (Saturday 7/14) and one camp stayed up drinking and yelling until after midnight. The only plus to that was that because I was awake, I left the tent to use the bathroom and caught an amazing star show around 1 AM. Would not camp here again, but I would likely hike the trail up and back for some good exercise.

The best hardest hike I’ve ever done but so worth it! We went up and back the same day. It’s a well traveled trail so I wasn’t as concerned about the bear presence. Take your walking poles!

Walked this trail yesterday to the summit. Beautiful views and we saw a goat that was very interested in us also! I feel that this trail is pretty steep with lots of rock so I was glad I brought my walking poles. Getting to the top was so worth it!

It was incredible. My 8 year old son was able to do it with me. We got rained on at the top but came back to a stunning rainbow!

Great easy trail! Fun with my mom, easy drive there.

Steady incline. Precarious at times. Lots of bugs. AMAZING views from the top. Loved this hike! Will def do again.

Beautiful views! Definitely more of a mountain biking trail, especially on the downward part of the loop. You’ll need a vehicle with a high clearance/AWD to get to the trailhead though! The road is incredibly bumpy and we got stuck.

The hike is beautiful with the first part of it being in the trees and then it opening up to beautiful views! There was still snow pack and some run off.
Downside was the road going up. It’s a terrible 6 miles. If you have a mountain bike or 2 wheeled vehicle it would be a little better but it’s not for beginners.

Great hike. A lot of switchbacks. Beautiful views at the top. We went later in the day and the parking had a few open spots. Took about 1h 50m up and 1h 30m down.

Super fun hike- I was completely alone with my dogs which is always amazing. I was able to easily make it to all the lakes, but I’m glad I had my phone gps and maps. The trail up to the upper two lakes is much narrower and not well marked. However the trail is worn and easy to follow once you are on it.

Awesome Hike !

Beautiful views! Go early due to heavy traffic, small parking area, and narrow trails. We got there at 8am and it took 3.5 hours round trip. Only saw one other hiker going up but saw many coming up as we were going down. Keep going to the top! Its worth it.

This is one of my favorite hikes within 30 minutes of Bozeman! You can expect a gradual, steady climb on a wide trail that winds through thick trees the majority of the way up. You’ll also get a few opportunities to admire the canyon walls towering above you as you make your way up. There is also a beautiful section that runs through a small open area next to a creek. Once you near Emerald Lake, you’ll start to enter a few larger meadows. When you reach Emerald lake, you’ll have a great view of the peaks and plenty of spots for a picnic or camping.

If Emerald lake is too crowded, continue up the west side of the lake through yet another beautiful meadow. The trail takes you one mile further to Heather lake. It is slightly smaller and has more bugs, but will likely be less crowded. There was still quite a bit of snow to go through to get to Heather Lake, last weekend, but it was manageable as long as you have a general idea of where the lake is.

Great hike, but be prepared to get a leg workout with the steep hike to the peak! Once you make it, the views are breathtaking! Also be prepared for all the rocks that might move when stepping in them, ankle high boats are recommend. also make sure you have a car with good clearance for the rough road up!

This is an excellent hike! After the initial waterfall, you’ll see a fast-flowing creek cascading down the canyon as well as a few more falls (one of which is even more impressive than Pine Creek Falls). You’ll also get great views of the peaks and the canyon from above. 5 miles in, you’ll reach the massive Pine Creek Lake.

The trail is rocky the whole way and gets steep after the falls. It also gets pretty overgrown at a creek crossing this time of year which can make it difficult to find the correct place to cross.

It is a moderately difficult trail with some particularly steep/rocky spots, but this hike is well worth the workout! If you don’t mind breaking a sweat, you can make it from the trailhead to the lake in 2 hours and make it back out in 1.5.

Awesome hike. Views at the top are worth it. The road on the way in is really rough so be prepared. We did this hike on July 8th and there was still snow and ice on trail.

This trail follows the creek through some beautiful old growth Douglas Fir forest. You are going uphill most of the way in but it’s not steep. There are many paths that lead off to the river along the trail but when you come to the falls you’ll know you’ve arrived because they’re awesome! It’s a great spot to sit down with some of the mist from the falls cooling you off after the hike. Hiked this on my birthday this year and thought what a great way to spend the day.

This is a pretty easy hike. The trail is very well maintained and there’s people of all ages hiking it. A very pleasant experience as far as short hikes go.

Definitely a challenge but great hike overall. Took us about 3.5 hours up and 2 down.

Great hike and great views. Fun spot to backpack

Always packed with way too many hikers.Pretty views and the hole in the rock at the top is a very popular photo opt. Steeper hike but definitely doable for most levels.

Always a good hike when in the bozeman area. Pretty short hike for the summit views that you are rewarded with ! There seems to be more and more people each time we go so it can be a fairly trafficked hike. A good chance of seeing mountain goats if you keep your eyes peeled!

As you make your way up to the castle there is moderate incline the entire way with expanding views. go on a clear as to not get caught in the storm.

This hike may not be long, but you definitely have a climb. The trail is visible for about the first 2/3 of the hike, then it disappears. Keep climbing to the top of the hill and you’ll see the lake about 400 feet below you. You’ll also have a pretty good view of Sacajawea Peak, Fairy Lake, and the surrounding area to the south.

Getting down into the lake is technical and can be difficult. Make sure your in good enough shape to get in and out of the bowl.

Fun and rugged for a “family” trail. Rocky and cool. Lots of stopping off points to view the rushing creek, close mb huge rocks, more.

Wonderful hike. It is a steep climb up to the peak, rocky in some areas, but a good hike. The trail can become narrow at some areas as well. I took this hike on the 4th of July. Started out in the morning and easily found a parking spot. I found myself all alone at the peak. The views from the peak are wonderful. Spent about 30 minutes having my snack and on my return trip I encountered the crowds coming up the trail.
