rock scrambling is the best.

Nice hike to do with my dog and teens on veterans day. We saw a bear driving in the park but not on the trail. The incline seems to be about 2/3 of the way in on clockwise. It was nice to go that route and get the scenic view of the valley/Front Royal.

This trail was an awesome, snowy workout. I could potentially rate it a 5 after another visit, but with the sky dumping buckets of snow there was just no view, so I couldn’t get the whole picture. The snow sure made for its own beautiful spectacle, though, 6-8+ inches on the ground and snowing during the whole hike. We worked counterclockwise, and parts of the ascent were a bit slippery and tricky in the snow. The decent was very gradual and easy breezy, quite picturesque. We saw maybe 15 people during the 2 hours, 45 minutes it took us, which is unusual for this normally very popular spot. All in all, the views may have been nonexistent in the snowstorm, but it’s definitely worth it for a great workout and general good time.

Fun hike. got turned around and ended up turning left and hitting skyline drive instead of looping back to the visitor center (oops) so we added an extra 2 miles. otherwise, it was a fun walk in the woods..not too terribly steep. saw bears on the way back from the trail but not on the trail itself.

This is probably my favorite trail in the entire park. This is like a giant playground. It feels exposed and if you are afraid of heights, this probably is one to stay away from ...but the views are amazing and worth it. It is a pretty easy hike and the payoff for the view is well worth the scramble. NO DOGS allowed on the trail for obvious reasons ...I don't want someone hurting their fur baby trying to get them up to the summit for a pic, there are plenty of other places for that in the park..

Love this hike!
Done it 3 times but never all the loop. I found difficult to find where to turn if doing it counterclockwise. The first time I went, it was 06:00 AM and saw a bear in a tree.

One of the best places for sunrise/sunset if your up to scrambling up and down the rocks.

Beautiful trail, especially in the snow!

Loved the hike and the variety of scenery. With the recent snow, the trail was a bit muddy in places,, but completely hikeable in tennis shoes.

For beauty, challenge, trail head access I give it 5 stars. For speeding, inconsiderate and sometimes dangerous mountain bikers I give it a zero. Especially if you bring your dogs please watch for bikers.

It’s under an hour, but it’s a great hour. Rock scramble is fun, you’re inches from sheer cliff in a few spots, though. Can be crowded.

Bearfence is always a hike. Short and sweet with quite the view at the peak. It is challenging for those who do not like heights or are unsteady on their feet.

Short trail with some challenging rock scrambles, definitely not pet friendly, nice views

Something new around every corner.

Great moderate trail.

Nice enjoyable hike. We were diverted several times due to a bear family in the area. Saw a lot of wildlife. Great hike for dogs! Very peaceful.

Great hike suitable for kids

This trail was about 40 minutes from us. WELL worth the drive, great scenic look overs, lots of rock formations. Unfortunately a lot of off leashed dogs with irresponsible owners, but we’ve been finding it everywhere lately. None the less, we will be back many more times!

My favorite trail during my time in the park. Fun rock scramble at the end and a beautiful 360 view to top it all off.

my favorite trail in the area

Enjoying yes this trail since all Billy Goat trails were closed due to flooding.

Loved it! Easy diverse terrain and beautiful views. Not crowded. Easy parking.

Awesome!!

Beautiful views. Peaceful place for the sunrise, quick rock scramble.

It was a nice trail. Shaded parts and also parts in the sun. Nice views way up high. Fun hike overall.

A great hike through lots of terrain to get some miles in without a lot of elevation.

Really enjoyed this as a loop w/ my 6 month old puppy. Do the loop counter clockwise- that way you hit the steep stuff going uphill and downhill is a gentle slope if you have a dog and don’t want the trail to be too hard on their joints going downhill

Great views & quick hike. I’d actually call the terrain more Moderate than easy (some rocky parts where it’s not 100% clear which way the trail leads, but the area is small enough you couldn’t get lost). Perfect tacked on after a longer hike elsewhere in the park.

This has to be one of the best value hikes in Shenandoah. The level of effort vs rewarding views is awesome! My 12yo son and I made this out first hike in Shenandoah and it was a perfect way to break-in to hiking. The trail was lightly trekked unlike Hawksbill or other popular trails that can get crowded. There is a fun little rock scramble and a false peak that is the perfect place to take in the views and a snack. It only took 30-45 minutes to summit at a relaxed pace and stops to take in different scenic or fun spots along the way. We did it on a hot and humid July day so I look forward to doing it in better weather in the fall.
