This hike was exhilarating! I highly recommend everyone try it at least once. We went on August 12, which was a little overcast. Check the weather before you go so that you hike on a day to meet your expectations. An overcast day keeps you cooler, but you will miss some of the views. Overcast worked for me, as I skipped some of the trails the closer we got to the top. For an extra challenge try some boulder jumping. This was an amazing experience!

The view at the top is stunning! I would say this hike is more moderate than hard. I’m in decent shape. The last bit is steep but just when you think it’s too steep it will even out to give you a little break. It’s definitely longer than 7.7 miles especially if you want to walk around the lake and see it from all the points which I highly recommend. Definitely go to the rocky part where aasgard pass starts. Totally worth it! Get there early because it was super crowded coming up when we were coming back down around 12 and it is a lot cooler going up in the morning. We didn’t have a problem with bugs at all.

This is one of the most beautiful hikes I have ever been on. I would say it is more moderate than hard, the length isn’t too bad and it’s pretty gradual with a few steep points. The top is stunning views all around, the water is unbelievable. The water wasn’t as cold as I expected, so jump in! Make sure not to separate from your group at the top though because there are a ton of small side trails along the lake and they are very disorienting and our group and lots of others lost each other briefly. Also it is recommended to not pee on the trail due to the goats so there is a little toilet perched on the trail at the top for going to the bathroom- amazing view from it too! Recommend stopping in Leavenworth for a sausage after :)

I went here for a day hike on 8/11/18. My friend and I drove from Seattle starting at 5:30 AM and made it up to the parking lot by 8:30 AM. We didn’t even get to park in the parking lot because it was so crowded. A lot of people started to create their own parking spots later in the day, and boxed other cars in. So, I am totally happy that I didn’t park in the lot!! I just parked on the side of the road-I would recommend this. My friend and I are in fairly good shape as we both play soccer and run 3-4 times a week, so we made it up in 2 hours and 15 minutes. This included breaks and picture taking. The last 30-40 min of the hike are a bunch of rocky switch backs, and that part of the trail I would consider “hard”. Every other part of the trail is moderate. We sat by the lake for 45-60 min and ate lunch sitting next to the super turquoise lake. It was a beauuuuutiful day. It reached a high of about 75ish, but the trail is well shaded and we both hiked in shorts and a T-shirt. The only super exposed part of the hike is when you get to rest at Colchuck, but even then you can find a spot to rest in the shade! As for footwear, we are lucky enough to have nice hiking shoes and our feet were totally fine on the rocky terrain. The trail is doable with tennis shoes...I just wouldn’t recommend it since it’s a long hike (4 hours for us total). There were 0 bugs out, and I think we were really lucky about this as I heard this trail could get buggy. I will definitely do it again.

Great hike. Went 8/11 got to the trail at about 6:30am made it to the lake in 2.5 hours. Had no issues with bugs. Trail was well kept up. Moments of steepish climbs then flat then climbs then flats which made the hike rather enjoyable. I personally would not rate this hard more like a high moderate. If you have done MAILBOX before this hike this will be a breeze. Lake is beautiful. GET THERE EARLY. Crowds show up in the afternoons.

Oh sweet Jesus this was challenging! Mostly because it was so hot! Went on Wed Aug 8 and it HOT! But what a beautiful hike and views at the top we’re worth it... I went alone but in hindsight might have been good to have company... I appreciated the meditative time with nature.. Enjoy!

Worth the walk!

Awesome hike! It was challenging in my opinion and I would reccomend bug spray for sure. The flies were relentless. Took our group around 3 hours up and 1 hour 45 minutes down. The view at the top was AMAZING and very worth it. We took a rewarding swim as well, water was around 40-50 degrees. BEAUTIFUL water and mountainous terrain!

The intensity level reflects what is stated on the site, HARD. I’m new to hiking and this hike was very rigorous and exhausting. I’m not in the best shape and I have asthma so I took many breaks on my way up. My legs started giving up once I was almost at the lookout but a group of hikers let me borrow their trekking pole. You definitely meet nice people when hiking :)

Tips:
- Bring bug spray, you don’t really feel the mosquitos and flies unless you stop.
- Drive VERY carefully on the last 6 miles before arriving at the parking lot as the dirt/gravel road is filled with a lot of potholes.
- Wear hiking shoes as you are walking over LOTS of rocks.
- You need a parking permit (Northwest Forest Pass), which you can purchase at Verlot Public Service Center for $5.
- Bring plenty of water and a snack.
- Take breaks as needed.

The distance is off on this app. This trail(paved) from the parking spot on East Cascade was 1.5 miles to the walking bridge. we locked up our cruisers there and walked(dirt) another .5 mile to the falls. we could have stayed on our bikes, but it was nice to give our bums a rest. The falls were not a typical fairytale waterfalls. they were more like a gushing angry whitewater. Impressive in their own way. A nice outing from Sunriver.

Took the single track out and back to benham. Great for a 12 yr old first time single track rider and adults looking for a easy dirt trail.

Beautiful waterfalls!!

Aug 6,2018. Another wonderful day with nature. But the road going there was awful, it was like crater in the moon! So drive safely. And don’t forget to bring bugspray, you’ll thank me later. Lol.

As always, view at the top is breathtaking. But definitely not for beginners.

Great hike but hit it early to avoid congestion.

I love this hike for the amazing work out and AMAZING view at the top but there are a couple things to know:

1)The potholes on the road were awful! Enormous potholes everywhere so you have to drive pretty slowly and carefully which takes quite a while.

2) The mosquitos were REALLY BAD! Bring bug spray for sure! They are swarming everywhere, even at the top! Flies were pretty dense too but avoid mosquito bites and bring some spray!

beautiful hike, dont think it's a hard hike but definitely challenging. beautiful views, saw mountain goats!

Absolutely stunning views! The hike is challenging but not overly difficult, and well worth the effort. The black flies were a bit of a nuisance, but we forgot our bug spray. Bring your swimsuit for a rewarding swim in the lake!

NOT A BEGINNERS HIKE!!! Beautiful exciting views all the way up. Definitely a leg burner

Coming from the perspective of an avid hiker this was nice walk in the park. That being said, there are some steep inclines but they're short, maybe 1/4 mile or less. Most of the hike is a very slight, 3-5% incline. Doable hike for all skill levels. However, during the steep parts there are a lot of steps so if you have bad knees it may be difficult.

Beautiful hike! It was definitely a workout for me and my group, and we’re in pretty good shape. The view at the end of the hike made it sooo worth it. It’s unreal. Took us about 5 hours there and back. I absolutely recommend this hike!!

Beautiful!! I’m a fairly experienced hiker but this is one of the tougher ones I’ve done. We went at dusk and ended up having to hike back at dark with a little one on our backs which made it feel a lot more intimidating. The scramble at the top is no joke but is completely doable. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

Was here a few days ago. The road to the trailhead is very poor, lots of potholes that took a bit to maneuver in my little car (others with trucks and 4WDs flew by with no issue however). The trail was actually fairly easy to follow with orange signposts along the way, however if you’re not paying attention it would be pretty easy to take a wrong turn and wind up going the wrong way so be alert. I wore bug repellent and had no issues. It was a beautiful trail, only a few people up the top when I summited ~10am however passed many groups on their way up when I was descending so if you want a quiet trail best to go in the morning I would say.

Cool Misty day, bugs were not a problem. The road going up was!! Dirt road for first 4.7 miles. In about the worst condition l have seen a popular Forest Service road. Then paved the last 1.8 miles with one 15 foot dirt path with about a 4 to 6 inch drop. Trail was as expected with about 4 short snow patches. Got to have good knees.

Had an awesome two day trip at Colchuck Lake. It was real hot so definitely bring lots of water. Personally, I would rate the hike as moderate to hard. The worst part of the trip was the bugs, the biting flies were relentless! Applied bug spray non stop and it barely stopped them, but it was so worth it. You need to go swimming, as the water is so beautiful and refreshing. We did see a small black bear in the distance on the way out, around a mile from the trail head. Enjoy!!

Love this trail. Signage could be better.

Last did this hike in 1977, Wonderful views. Going back this year.

This has to be my favorite trail ever! This place is unmarked. The only way to find it is by seeing a large side dirt pull out. Leave your car there go through the brush until you see the train tracks. Follow the train tracks to the left. Cross the pass and you will encounter the falls. Super easy. You can climb down and find 2 other sets of falls!!!

The views are great. The hike wasn’t actually as hard as we thought until the very end. Definitely a hike to do in the early morning as the end is in full song.

Not an easy hike, but the end result is 100% worth it. Go prepared to swim at the top, you’re missing out if you don’t!

Great hike. Challenging yet fun. The earlier you start the better the trail gets busy and the cooler morning weather helps as well. Bring lots of water and bug spray helps!
