I do like this hike but would rather do echo.

Great for all ages, easy 1 mile hike if parked in the designated water parking lot. Must have and reserve pass ahead of time.

Awesome hike. Well marked unless you're myself on the way down. Definitely for more experienced hikers or more driven people in general. Beautiful views of wildlife and the city.

This trail had a lot of variance - desert, open vistas, creek crossing, and woodland. Because of that it's one of my fav's. It's special to walk along that creek - just lovely.

Love, love, love this trail. It's a must-do, essential for any passionate hiker in the Phoenix vicinity. ...or any surfers. :) Everyone needs a pic of themselves "riding the wave" at some point to use as desktop wallpaper.
The hike itself is fairly easy, though the last part up to the cave is the most challenging, hence the "moderate" rating. But it's absolutely something you can do, because YOU HAVE TO! Your reward isn't just the view, but the cool air in the cave. It's remarkably cooler. Be sure to bring a lot of water if it's warm out because there's no shade along the way.

Perfect for families/kids, tourists and anyone who may not have proper hiking or trail shoes, but yet still want a unique view. Once you park, there are steps leading you up to the Hole in the Rock. Those will take you 5-10 min to climb, depending on your cardio, ability to climb steps and maneuver around on dirt/rock. Easy peasy and purdy. If I worked in the area, I'd bring a sammie and hike this during my lunch hour.

Very nice walk!

I had an enjoyable time out on the trail, but found that it really doesnt skirt along the lake as much as I wanted. The lake is so beautiful that I couldnt help but walk off the trail up to the lake for more photos. I set out to do the entire loop, but managed instead to have zig zagged about 6 miles and was barely a third of the way around the lake, so I ended up having to turn back and walked another 2.5 miles back to my starting point because my water wouldnt have made the whole loop at the rate I went. The dots get hard to follow, Im not sure if maybe the trail is more obvious to others, but I found myself frustrated at a few points when I couldn't figure out which way I should go and it was another 15 feet to the next dot. Particularly by the bottom of the dam where it gets really grassy and green, I did a lot of circling and back tracking. I did have to get on all 4s to climb up and down several times, which isn't usually what I expect on a moderate trail. That being said, I guess if you stick exclusively to the trail and dont zig zag on and off the trail or end up on the side trails, it'll be the hike it says it is, but I found this trail to be at the upper limits of my physical ability as a 24 year old female who is by no means a couch potato, but doesnt exactly make it to the gym all 3 times per week.

Very Short, very heavily tracked, but absolutely beautiful!

This place is amazing. The weather was perfect. My family of four went thru 6 water bottles and a bag full of snacks we drove up thru Payson, from fountain hills and it took us 3.5 hours to get to the parking lot. Here are some pointers for you. 1. get a permit 2. wear your suit 3. bring aqua socks 4. wear sunscreen 5. pack food(a meal and snacks) and water 6. plan for a whole day. We went on a Monday and it wasn't busy at all. The water holes along the way were great to hang at or cool off. We will go again.

Not a bad trail. I’d say it’s easy and for all age groups. Relatively flat, lots of spots along the trail to pick the best route for your level of hiking ability. Perfect for beginners or people just getting back into hiking. Make sure you have plenty of water as with everywhere in AZ! Spots along the trail in the shade to take a quick little break! Check the weather reports and make sure you aren’t going to get stuck in a flash flood! Edit* went on 08/01/31 early afternoon.

We have 4 kids- 9, 7, 6, and 2. The bigger kids could do most of it all on their own. A few times we had to hold their hand but they loved it. There are a few cooler spots with small streams to play in. Beautiful scenery. The 2-year-old had to be held most of the time and passed between my wife and me, but we made it.

This hike is super well marked and highly trafficked. I tried getting to the top twice but the part where you essentially have to rock-climb freaked me out a little so I turned around. If you have anxiety / fear of heights the ascent to the top may not be your jam - but you can always turn around before that (there’s a helicopter landing area which makes a nice turnaround) while still getting the amazing views.

Gotta love this Hike!
It starts out rather easy but about half way you do get a little bit of an incline through big rocks yet it's not crazy difficult to get up to the Cave.
On the day hiked it there was another family with about 6 kids ranging from 14 to maybe 7 years of age, so yeah, if kids can do so it, why cant you!?
Anyhow, the sights from the top are quite nice and definitely one cool cave to go see!

Great hike. Might be hard for young children.

5 stars mostly for sentimental reasons. Decent views. Easy to access. Good little hike (5 minutes or less to the top) after the zoo. Definitely wish people would carry down their trash!!!

Awesome hike with a beautiful "rain forest" in the desert.

I would not call this a hiking trail, more like boulder climbing all the way to the bridge. I hike three times a week and this is not moderate, I would give this a very hard rating. There was no enjoyment for me taking this route to the bridge. This may be enjoyable for some people, just be prepared if you decide to go here. Also, be very careful when you get to the bridge, very slippery and dangerous rocks. If you are going there to see the bridge I would recommend the Gowan trail, short and steep. It is very beautiful there, but I will not be going back.

It was super short run! 2 minutes to go up. It's worth doing it, even you're on heels.... :)

First time here and loved the scenery! A variety of trails you can take, lots of wildlife to see, loved walking around the lake & hiking around the waterfalls. Will be back!

Beautiful, clean hike. Definitely get your permit before you go.

Absolutely loved it!!!

Fun trail, great views, gets hot fast, go early.

Had lunch at the Cafe today and then a leisurely walk around the lake. It was 94 degrees so it was a little hotter than usual, but it was just as beautiful as it always is. Love this hike every time

It was about 5 miles for us.. but switched off to Peavine trail on the backside and skipped the last lakeshore trail

You do need good shoes and water.

White Dots very helpful but hard to see in places and easy to get off on an Ad Hoc trail if distracted. Some of the white dots are obscured and in other places a bit inconsistent ..i.e a bunch in one pace then spaced out a bit too far in other places. Map is good. GPS is good. Better in morning - cool ....er ... we did rock stuff first than flat trail out...

This hike is absolutely beautiful! You really get to experience a little bit of everything this desert has to offer. The views are fantastic and the hike easy, so even with the 100+ degree temperatures it was pleasant. Tips- Pack lots of water, be mindful of snakes!

To the person who attempted to break into my car while I was on this hike - you are scum. You deserve the absolute worst and it’s people like you that the world doesn’t need. How awful are you. The fact that you couldn’t even break a window with a rock says a lot about the type of criminal you are. You deserve a spot in hell. For all of you who are planning to do this hike - please be aware there is someone out there attempting to break into your vehicle while you are out in your hike.

great hike, go early and bring water
