Lake Tahoe 2018 Map

Kind of a disappointing backpacking trip. The permit system kinda sucks if you want to be secluded...After the first night, backpackers can camp wherever they want, not just in their zone. Cathedral Lake ended up being extremely busy and there are only two decent places to camp. Also, be very aware that people will be hiking up the the peak of Mt. Tallac as early as 3 AM to catch the sunrise. I understand hikers need to be loud to warn bears, but blasting electronic music and hollering was a bit much.

Camping here was pleasant, but only because we were able to find a spot away from the crowds as there were probably 7 or 8 other groups of people camping here. The lake was swimable and drinkable (with filter), but kind of scummy compared to other Sierra lakes I've visited. If your primary goal is swimming, I would look elsewhere. The hike itself, although short, was enjoyable and offered surprisingly diverse scenery. The trail was easy to follow, but would be a bit more difficult if there was snow. Our hike began with a hail storm at the trailhead haha, but it was clear skies and sunshine after that blew through. Despite the fire ban, one of the groups camping here (a dozen large young men with fishing poles) decided to have a large fire. It was disappointing and frustrating to witness. Please obey the restrictions in place. You don't have to burn things just because you're camping.

Nice hike. Easy to find the trailhead. The trail is well used and easy to follow. Already frost in the morning.

this us one of my favorite places to go, especially if you climb to the top of the falls and hike back. it's like a little oasis. you never run out of exploring options.

Beautiful hike! Totally worth it, especially if you keep going above the falls to Avalanche Lake. The extended hike up to the lake is hard (climbing over boulders at a very steep incline). There are absolutely no trail markers which is why I gave it 4 vs 5 stars.

About 3 miles one way, with the usual detours. A beautiful little lake.

so fun!

Easy hike...beautiful little lakes, neat rocks, peaceful

Such a beautiful lake in the middle of Yosemite National Park! Was there Labor Day weekend and there were still people swimming and plenty of happy people! Very clear lake and many great photo ops too!

A good family hike on a gorgeous day in Tahoe. Reliable shoes a must as the gravel trail was easy to slip. Our 5&7 yr olds held up well. Took the Vikingsholm tour and walked along the beach before ascending.

Pretty easy hike. Went September 8 and it was 90 degrees. Most of the hike is in the open so it gets pretty hot. Unfortunately the falls are dry this time of the year so that is why I only gave it two stars. I will come back in the spring to hike again and I expect to change the rating. The lake is an amazing color and beautiful to look at though. And who doesn’t like a dam?

Even Busy Labor Day Weekend the lake was amazingly quiet. Kayaked early morning then hiked trail around the lake. Highly recommend

awesome hike!!

Son and I tackled what we have been driving by for 20 years. You know you’re at the top when you find the lake. Absolutely breathtaking!

Good 5 mile hike out and back. Beautiful views with a lot of other hikers coming through. Overall increase in elevation was about 900 feet from the parking lot. Please don’t feed the grouse. A pair was calmly walked alongside us for 20 feet or so.

Hiked this as a day hike with some friends and the kiddos, ages from 6-14. All had a great time and loved it. It’s a relatively easy hike now the kids are older and would be a good hike for an overnight with kids to get them into backpacking. The trail does split of to the left fairly early on (about 1/2mile) along the small river with a fallen tree as bridge, at this point there were no markers to say where the trail went and could be a little confusing. Other then that the trail is easy to follow and really fun! Lake was cold and refreshing! Not too many beaches but enough rock to share. We’ll be back!

Beautiful hike! The trail is hard to follow but follow the water and you’ll be fine!. We were worried it would be overly crowded but it was perfect. We brought our dog (border collie) and she loved it. There are some steep parts, so be sure to wear shoes with a good tread.

Definitely recommend this hike with breath taking nature

This trail is terrible marked but the views make it worth it. You see several waterfalls. After you get so far with the water on your right.... head left up the hill and go as far as you want. The Granite stone is gigantuous and can be overwhelming. But you will never see anything like it again.

Beautiful view of Emerald Lake. The castle was very unique. Easy walk down harder to walk up. I would do it again for the kayaking out to the island. Where good shoes do not use flip-flops.

Great walk down to house but going up check your heart rate

Very nice but the trail can be hard to find at times. Definitely worth the trek in.

Terribly marked. Fairly easy. Pretty crowded on weekend. We arrived at lot around 945am and got one of last parking spots. Great views.

Trail poorly marked but as long as you keep river to the right of you as you ascend to waterfall you will be ok. Nice spots along the way to enjoy the river. The waterfall is beautiful!

A good trail to see Emerald Bay and Vikingsholm from up close. Fairly easy with a moderate climb back to the parking lot.

Did this trail on 8/20/18 and it was fairly easy to hike and beautiful. There are several places safe enough and deep enough to swim in. Took my 4 year old daughter and she loved it.

There is no true end to this hike I decided to turn back around when I realized the trail got too steep and difficult to navigate with my 4 year old.

Parking gets pretty full after 9:30 AM so be early.

This is a must do hike when the waterfall is flowing strong! The trail can be pretty unmarked at times, but it was never difficult to find which way to go. Just keep the river on your right side going in. The trail has minimal shade, but is very scenic the entire length, with huge granite faces and cliff-sides. The waterfall is breathtaking and there are some great pools to swim in for those who are willing to brave the cold water. The hike was not difficult, but I can see it being a possible problem if bringing dogs, due to the rocks towards the end of the route.

Arrive early for parking! There are many places along the road outside the parking area and you’ll save $10. There are trails on the South Lake Tahoe side so you don’t have to feel you’re walking in traffic. Nice hike with many excellent viewpoints and photo ops. It’s pretty much one long switchback down to the beach area where you can picnic, swim and enjoy the views of emerald bay. Be sure to take a tour of the house and get it’s history! There is also a short (0.3 mi) hike starting from the gift shop to the base of eagle falls. There are stairs but they are well cut and the falls are well worth it.

Be prepared for that long switchback out. It is very doable. Wear good shoes! The climb back can be hot and sun exposed midday and early afternoons
