Mike and Cheryl here. This review is for Tongue Mountain Range and Northwest Bay Trail. Two stars because this trail is tooooo long. There is not enough visual rewards for the length of this trail. Plus there are sections where the descents are just not fun. Toooo steep toooo much. I have no problem hiking 15 miles when the trail provides the rewards. This does not. Unless you simply want to do a long strenuous hike, do some of the other great trails in the area.

Hiking

Straightforward gravelly trail/road to start, but after the junction with Thomas it turns into more of a lovely trail.

Seems I give a lot of fives this year. Maybe as the weather was perfect. No bugs no humidity no sweating. Just over 9.25 miles and over 2100 vertical according to Strava (garmin measured both about 10 percent less). Parked at Dacy Clearing (more in a bit) So hiked up the West side of Bumps Pond to Erebus high point. Well high point and marker for the LG12 not summit based on reviews and requirements. Kept going N around to Fishbrook Pond (lake) then south to Sleeping Beauty and back to truck. This trail has everything in a good way. No people except the SB potions. 7 miles less than ten total. Social distancing! Solid hour of perfect summit time. So wide open never felt like too many people too close The parking - the parking is not the problem it’s the access road. Arrived at 730am Saturday only four other cars. Fits maybe 20. Left at 2pm maybe 16 cars. Well vehicles. No issues with the road slowly with a rav4 but a car will not make it due to huge holes ruts in the small hills. Don’t attempt unless AWD Stay at hogtown and walk the extra three miles RT.

Quiet trail, but there are no views. Wouldn't do if not doing the Lake George 12. Well maintained path and took us 3 hours total.

HikingGreat!

This was a great trail! If you park where it says to, next to the pond type area, from there you walk to your right to the forest preserve path. Then you’ll walk further and see the different trails you can access. The trail markers are very easy to follow, however they are your only markers. After you reach the first peak, there’s no more signs letting you know what summit you’re at. I followed the mileage I’d gone on my phone to know I was at the end, and I had gone over, what looked like 3 peaks. That being said, the peaks are GORGEOUS! I think they were extra pretty because it was blue skies, but I thought they were so beautiful! And overall a great trail! Also, this trail was not crowded at all, but I did hike it on a Friday not Saturday or Sunday, also the parking lot is not that big, so I would try and get there early when you go. But, you could also park at the northwest pond parking area, which is a little before the tongue mountain parking, and has a sign for!

CampingGreat!

Just beautiful views, medium difficulty as a loop. The first part until the summit was very easy and accessible, the loop down was steeper but had some great views over the lake

The trail was good and sleeping beauty is always amazing. But going up to Erebus’s summit is not worth it. The pink blazes are sparse and it’s can be very difficult looking for blazes while going up. Up top there is a rock pile and canteen with the Erebus mt on it. That’s it.

Great trail, went clockwise, my views were not the best due to clouds but the trail was awesome on the ridge from Cat to Thomas. Better hike then advertised.

absolutely loved it. definitely do the loop. i went up the red trail to the summit and then down through the blue and yellow trails past the ponds. this counterclockwise loop is definitely the right direction to go, once you do it you will understand why. red trail up was Rocky and muddy like everyone said. at first I thought yeah this is pretty rocky but then I came to learn what Rocky really mean. steeper half of the red trail is basically a boulder dotted stream of loose rocks. it was muddy but not too muddy however I don't think there has been significant rain in a few days. if there were, it would probably be so slick that i would wait for a better day. view from the summit is great, but a few hidden lookouts on the way down towards the pond offered even better views. I spent about 40 minutes on the top getting absolutely hammered by wind which was both exciting and somewhat difficult to endure...bring layers. the trip down is like through a whole different world. still very rocky, but much less so. lots of different scenery and the area around the lakes is just serene beyond description. give it a go! counterclockwise!

Erebus is disappointing, Sleeping Beauty has some nice views but is crowded. Honestly my favorite part was Fishbrook pond. Looks like a great place to camp.

Great views! Decently long hike if you do Cat and Thomas. Recommend bringing lunch and lots of water if you do the full loop. Took us about four hours.

As beginners we took the blue trail. It was about 7.5 miles up and down total. The summit was a beautiful view! We met a ninja up at the top who was able to show us Lake George (which we knew). He also showed us black mountain and if you look way yonder you can see Vermont mountains as well. I would recommend bringing gravel shoes and water (we had neither)! I am now working towards becoming a professional hiker from this beautiful experience.

Beautiful views of Lake George and an easy walk along the shore line. Hiked the trail on 9/6 and encountered one rattle snake on the trail. The length of the trail combined with the steep terrain makes it a challenging all day hike.

We hiked this trail on 9/6/20 in a clockwise direction, and the trail was in great condition. We did not see any rattle snakes, but we did see a small gardener snake on that flat 5 mile stretch at the end of the hike.

Took Cat trail blue, was definitely worth it for the view. The tricky parts are rocks walking on and tree roots closer to the summit with quite the uphill hike! Tried to do the Thomas red trail,, but we ended up getting lost to a different red trail mark. Almost made it to the top of it the red trail but glad we didn't. Heard there are underground bees by the summit!!! Cat was worth the hike!!
