on Eaton Canyon Trail

Enjoyed a beautiful day to take this trail. Have come here before back when the stream was pretty dry last summer 2017. Really enjoyed coming back, listening to the water run, and enjoying that waterfall was amazing!!

Gorgeous hike, and not another soul on the trail. Walked this at sunset, and the views from the top of the ridge were incredible. Even though it had been a relatively warm day (highs in the 90s), the walk through the canyon to the Dawn Mine was cool and shady. Highly recommend this.

Pretty easy going down to the waterfall only about 1.8 miles but on the return it can be a little difficult due to the incline. Plan accordingly.

nice with 4 kids

Even though the falls don't flow as much, it's still a great hike.

Amazing views of L.A

Great hike last nite and way to step into my birthday..As I keep doing this hike weekly, I definitely feel a positive difference in my body and mind and its conditioning me to level up with ease onto longer and higher altitude trails.

A quick getaway hike that is easy to get to. Counterclockwise for the view at the end. Clockwise for a bit more cardio.

This is the best hike I’ve ever been on! It was so beautiful, you see everything from a stream, huge rocks, wildlife (we saw a huge snake on the trail) AND there’s a bunch of shade. Not to mention, we only saw about 4 different groups the whole time we were on it, which was a Saturday. It was a little hard to find at first but man, id recommend this trail to anyone!

Great hike. I was tempted to take a star off for the amount of fellow hikers. My friend and I were slow, so we were constantly moving to the side to let others pass (our problem, not theirs). However, the hike itself is worth five stars. The "destination" at the end was fun and the views were great. We started at about 6:45 am and were in shade most of the time, which was wonderful in the SoCal summer.

Great hike with a good vibe. Lots of people and lots of dogs. Trail is well marked. Snacks and water were for sale at entrance for reasonable price.

we met up slightly after the sunrise for a relatively cool hike, despite the season. The beginning of the trail is paved, but quickly hits dirt. The trail eventually finds sanctuary from the sun as the canyon narrows. It’s a pretty easy trail, and I recommend it for any beginner looking to lengthen their hike. the area by the mine is nice and shaded. The hike to the mine is relatively short, extend it for the full sunset loop trail.

Hope you enjoy!

California has been going through a drought and this summer has been one of the hottest summers I’ve ever experienced. The waterfall has lost its heavy and pleasant flow.

Great trail, although a little overgrown. The atmosphere shifts several times throughout the hike, keeping it surprising and interesting. BRING: bug spray, the mostly-fired river bed is a mosquito haven. Also, perhaps booties for your dog too - as the asphalts the summer (it was 96 out) on the way back will burn their paws.

Nice day hike. Wasn’t much water at the waterfall but did find a garden snake and turtle there.

The beginning of the trail to the waterfall is easy. If you decide to continue up the trail to the left you’re at an incline until you reach the Deer Valley Loop. That’s another mile-ish loop and then you go back down the way you came.
There isn’t much shade on the trail, only when you reach the abandoned structures along the way.
It’s really woodsy in some areas with streams, and there are lots of birds & lizards. Overall very beautiful, and quiet on the harder trail.

We met up slightly after the sunrise for a relatively cool hike, despite the season. The mountain ridges on the way up shielded us from the sun for the most of the ascent, and a bit cloud cover was an extra gift as well. The views on the way up are unparalleled, both of the San Gabriel Valley, JPL, and the San Gabriel Mountains. Once at the top, there sits the ruins of an old resort, the Echo Mountain House. There is a super cool Echo Phone towards the end of the ruins, past the water basin, which has some bright color graffiti. There’s a lot to see up here, not to mention the panoramic views of the Los Angeles area. The whole hike took about 3 hours for us, with a break at the top. I highly recommend this one. It’s a medium difficulty trail, because of the ascent, but probably a good transition for beginner to intermediate hikers. I’m definitely coming back, but I want to try some of the longer routes, possibly from the Sunset Ridge Loop Trail.

Hope you enjoy!

The waterfall itself is currently a trickle ending in a small pool. It’s still pretty. The hike to get to it was lovely, very green, lots of shady trees. Like folks have already mentioned that last half mile back up to the parking lot is rough and exposed. Almost no shade. Be prepared to sweat and get a good thigh workout. Also watch out for the gnats that follow you all the way through the hike. They wouldn’t let up!

A little harder than moderate at some of the road diversions. Warm and sunny! Loved it. You can see the ocean from some spots.

beautiful, but crowded.

Attempted my 1st nite hike ever at 10pm last night. Facing the city lights ,
one foot in front of the other, headlights on , hiking backpack equipped with 6bottles H20, snacks , battery pack and cell phone charger. I trailed with hiking poles the scenic switchbacks. I recommend to focus light on ur step ahead as you may trip or step on a innocent tarantula. Take breaks to bring your heart at a cool beat and breath in and breath out slowly when needed... Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate..once u make it to the top , u can reward yourself with a cold one

Great hike!! The ruins are quite interesting. Nice that they have a write-up on the home that used to be, complete with pictures. The falls were very nice, even though a bit light, as there has been no rain lately.

We wanted to take the entire loop, so we made the decision to follow other hikers’ advice and start out on the Rising Sun Trail. Taking this way gets the steep incline portion out of the way in the first leg of the hike, which really helped to make the rest more enjoyable.

At first we thought the falls were closed, because of an early sign saying “area closed”, but this is misleading. There is another way to the falls just behind the ruins, as this was essentially their back yard.

The way back alternated on a paved road and hopping over the tiny stream, and it was really nice...easy.

Great hike...

Given the heat and lack of rain lately, the waterfalls were more of a faucet left on by accident. Still, would come again because of the hike to the falls. Shaded and beautiful.

As others have said, the first half mile or so from the parking lot, on the paved road, is a doozy. Be prepared to work to get back to your car.

Come early, bring a lot of water and yes, bring bug spray.
