Still a lot of snow all the way to the waterfalls. No snow shoes needed now as it is firm snow, at least in the morning, it’s getting soft on the afternoon. Good hiking shoes or mountaineering shoes are advised. I recommend to go up the ravine vs following the trail after about the 1 mile from the waterfall. Traversing the steep snow might be a little challenging, risk of slipping or sinking deep into the snow. Higher up it’s all safe and easier to navigate.
April 3rd. For the committed fit-ish type, this is absolutely do-able this time of year given you have decent weather leading up to and day of. GPS is obviously a great idea given the buried trail but in reality you can terrain associate your way to the summit and back. Snow shoes are a must this time of year unless you're skiing. If the Temps warm up later in the day the snow profile can change drastically. I recommend an early start and plan for cold high winds as you near the summit.
too much snow, didn’t make it to the top. March 27th, 2021
I’ve summited Rose twice, and it’s one of the tougher hikes in the Tahoe area. First 2.5 miles are heavily trafficked with people going to the waterfall but it clears out a bit past that point. Final ascent is mostly switchbacks. It can get windy at the top.
My friend went there last Friday by himself without checking the weather reports and later was found dead 1 mile up from Tamarack Trailhead.... I always was concerned about risks he was taking... I went to MT Whitney with him 5 times.... Have a lots stories to tell......
This is a great hike and amazing views definitely family friendly.
Trail is hard to find after third vista. Snow is really deep, I had to rely on the trail map not to get lost
Great snip
Great for ski
A great clear day. Snow a little sticky in the morning and slushy in places in afternoon. Although windy in parking lot, little to no wind on West facing slope and not much at top either.
This trail is awesome! Forsure one of my favorite hikes/adventures in the Donner summit area! We went during the snow after fresh powder and it was pretty icy in the tunnels so good boots are a must. Part of the trail is impassable when the tunnels stop due to the amount of snow. Will definitely check this trail out in the summer!
The snow is perfect for snowshoeing
This is a great hike.. It's a fun time going through the tunnels. Great views :) I made a quick youtube video you can check out ahead of time :) Link below. https://youtu.be/kZeKsOQMLmk
It’s a bit hard to follow the trail with a lot of snow you must have a good GPS map and confidence to go forward.
Nice hike
Lots of snow, beautiful scenery. Snowshoes a good idea.
Snowshoe adventure. We tried to make it to the waterfall but we were losing light. AllTrails map download a must as there is rarely any signage. Perhaps when it is not covered with snow it is easier to follow. Beautiful and peaceful trail!
Not a whole lot of snow this year, and trail was mostly already flattened out for us. Bit of effort to reach the peak, but beautiful & warm on this January day.
The trail was pretty good until about 2.6 miles in. Then it was quite icy and since I didn't have spikes, I turned around!
Trail was nice. Was glad I had ice spikes for the very beginning, but the icy stuff could be worked around. City noises could be heard on almost all of the trail. Waterfall was not super impressive, but it was a nice walk.
Good for snowshoeing. Trail was pretty easy to follow. Nice views along the way
It's a good spot for snowshoeing. No crowds and not too steep.
Insane. Awesome views.
