So beautiful along the whole trail. Amazing flowers and plenty of shade. Easy for small kids.

Saw 5 different moose, a porcupine, and lots of deer! We started at the trail head at 530 AM ! Got to the top around 630 AM and watched the sunrise ! This is my favorite hike ever! So beautiful! Accurately labeled moderate!

Pretty trail! Definitely moderate. Our 2 year old couldn't finish on his own, and our 6 year old made it but not without lots of complaining. Would definitely go back but not with small kids.

Maybe a bit more moderate than easy going uphill, but it was a beautiful trail. The first Lake was so big and peaceful. Nice quiet trail but definitely more traffic on it by early afternoon.

We hit the trail around 8:45am and saw a smattering of people now and then. This has lovely views on the climb, with lots of wild flowers and the lake is peaceful when loud talking people are not there. Why do people talk so loud? On the way down we stopped at Dog Lake which is small and more peaceful. We spotted a moose couple near the end of the hike which made our day; we couldn't miss them they crossed the trail.

I'm totally out of shape. Never workout. This was a tough hike, but achievable. Done in a little over 2 hours. Would definitely recommend it!

Definitely right on track with the moderate rating. I went with three kids, ages 11, 8 and 2. Good for kids except for a few rocky areas where its hard to get traction. Some decent shade in the middle of the day. The lake at the top is stunning. Watch out for squirrels stealing your food :) Bring plenty of water.

I wish we had gotten to the trail earlier in the morning! It was about 10am when we started, and the sun really beats down on the first section, making 67 degrees feel like 85. Plus, there were quite a few people on the trail. But the trail is beautiful and Lake Mary is gorgeous. And since it’s so big and many hikers continue to Lake Martha and Lake Catherine, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. I know people love Cecret Lake at the top of Lil’ Cottonwood Canyon (I do in too when the wildflowers are in full bloom), but this lake it WAY prettier. Can’t wait to go back and do Martha and Catherine too next time! My kids (15,12,10,8) enjoyed this one too, though they didn’t like all the people on the trail. I can’t figure out where they got their disdain for crowds...oh, wait...

We saw a moose! We also saw deer, pika, and chipmunks. When you get to the lake head left and go over the boulder and then head away from lake. There is another hidden lake and that’s where the moose are.

I’ve done his trail twice. It’s really good. Well trafficked so if you get hurt there’s someone close by to help. The downside is that it’s well trafficked so you’re never really alone. Ok the bright side, great cellphone coverage. At least on T-Mobile. I assume Verizon and AT&T’s coverage will be just as good.

It’s a fun trail. Do it in the morning. It gets hot in the summer afternoon.

Went after lunch, not too crowded, lovely waterfalls and rock formations along the way with the reward of beautiful Lake Mary. Highly recommend.

Hike was great and trail well marked. Definitely remember it is an impacted 26 mile venture from the turn off. You will encounter a few deep perpendicular ruts as well as pockets of loose sand along the way. Be careful as a tow truck runs up to a $1000 according to the clerk at the nearest convenience store. Trail well worth the effort.

Great views one of my favorites!

Previous posts have said it all. The trail is fairly easy. Hiked it in an hour. Overcrowded doesn’t begin to describe this lake. One group had 30 in their gang and another had 45. Add to that the small groups of 5-10 and there were at least 200 people this morning. Those were just the campers. Add to that the day hikers. Unfortunately, the large groups don’t have any outdoor or trail etiquette and leave you wishing you were somewhere else. One of the large groups was set up right at the cliffs, and wouldn’t make room for the rest to enjoy. Gotta do it at least once, but know what awaits you and don’t be disappointed. If it’s solitude and serenity you seek, turn left and go to Marjorie, Weir or Duck lake.

The parking lot is ridiculous. Too small. So many people that both sides of the road coming into the trailhead parking lot were lined with cars. Unfortunately, the road is marked “no parking.” The Forest Service wasn’t shy about leaving orange warning stickers on every single car. If you don’t want one of those, get there early and avoid the weekends.

Other than that, get out and go hiking! You’ll have a great story to tell.

Did this hike this morning and loved it! So beautiful.

Most beautiful trail. Definitely a favorite.

Hiked this early Sunday morning. We started at 7AM and were back down around 10AM at a nice and easy pace. It was getting really busy as we were almost done, but before that it was peaceful and quiet. Beautiful trail. Definitely a good moderate hike. With a little wandering around I ended up clocking around 5.5 miles.

Beautiful wild flowers! And saw a badger right off the trail.

There are a lot of badgers

This was a great hike, but be sure to wear shoes with good traction. It's rocky with a ton of loose gravel.

Gorgeous. One of my absolute favorites! Be sure to explore the side trails!!

Did this one yesterday and it took about 2 hours to make it to the top. My 4 year old was able to do the whole hike himself and the views at the top are breathtaking. Definitely a good family hike.

Took me 15 years to get back to this lake and I was surprised by how many people where on the trail and at the lake. While I think this hiking/backpacking trip is fantastic, if you're looking for solitude might want to consider a different area. There was a lot of people on this one, cliff jumping was in full swing on Saturday and it was a little rough finding a good spot to camp for the night.

For the trail itself I would say the moderate rating is pretty correct. The last half mile or so is a good solid climb and it did a number on me since this was the first trip of the season. When you get to the lake there is camp spots on the southwest side of the lake and then a few good spots on the north/northeast side of the lake.

Fun trail, really busy in the beginning, very narrow in some places.

Word of island lake has gotten around almost a little too much. I’d have to call it the “party lake” of the Uintas. Which could be taken as a good or bad thing depending on what you’re looking for. Lake is beautiful, well worth the hike. The hike to the lake is a little sadder every year with how many trees have died due to the bugs in them.
