Great easy hike four our family. We have four kids ranging from age 11 years old to five months old. Everybody loved it. Trail walks right along the side of the lake. Beautiful views of lake and mt lassen

Nice, but no dogs.

This is a fantastic trail! There are hundreds of absolutely giant redwood trees throughout the entire hike. Every step of the way is photogenic. I had to force myself to stop taking pictures so I could actually keep moving along the trail. The coordinates from AllTrails took me right to the trailhead. There's plenty of parking along the road in both directions. There's actually a third trail in the mix to consider and that is called Leiffer Trail. It runs parallel to the road and connects two different points of Leiffer Loop. It's actually necessary to take this trail to complete the loop, unless you want to walk back to your car along the dirt road, which would certainly be pleasant enough. I've uploaded a picture of a portion of the official Jedediah Smith State Park Map. You can see the connecting trail, and though it's not named on the map, the signs on the trail refer to it as Leiffer Trail. As for the Ellsworth Loop, it has a short lead-in trail and then you can go around it either way and then back out that same lead-in trail to rejoin the Leiffer Loop. The Ellsworth Loop is spectacular and would make a great hike in itself. There are tons of benches throughout all the trails so this would be a great hike to bring a picnic or a book or anything else you like sitting and doing, possibly make a day or half-day of it. I went on a weekday afternoon after Labor Day and I only saw one other party. I think the best time to go would be late morning to early afternoon. Due to the height of the trees and the density of the canopy it is quite dark. I went mid-afternoon and wished I had gone a bit earlier.

Very scenic, easy short trail, nice view of Lassen. We arrived at Manzanita campground around 3 and did not have much time to go far so we decided to stroll around the lake. I am glad we did. The lake was very beautiful. I could take some nice photos of Lassen front the lake.

Great hike! Like every trail in LVNP this one was beautiful. Easy hike around the lake. The trail is easy to follow and lots of places to sit and have a snack while enjoying the views! One part does get close to the road coming into the park but don’t let that stop you.

Quick little hike into a fantastic lava tube! Plenty of area in the pitch black. I did this alone and was lucky to be the only one in the cave. Super easy to get around (no debris or rocks to hike through or over), but the floor is a bit uneven, so keep some light lowered as you go and dont get too confident in the dark. Make sure you explore all the alcoves and keep heading back to the actual exit. Great fun, free, and so so easy!!

Great short hike! While not located in the NP, it’s worth the drive to see this unique hike! It’s a lava tube and pitch black dark once you get inside. If you have a head torch you will be fine just watch your steps as the ground is very uneven. Once out the other side you can walk around more trail above ground before going back down and through to the parking area.

Took my two 7 year olds around the lake while my wife and other kids hung out at the picnic area. Lots of shade, an easy walk for the boys. Ducks, geese, deer, squirrels, as well as many other birds along the way. Great for a leisurely stroll! We went July 2018.

This is a enjoyable walk around the lake. Lots of shade and the kids can toss stones in the lake and enjoy the birds and ground squirrels. Even more fun is to bring a small floaty and laze around on the lake. They rent them there too. Gets cold after October.

Loved this hike. Very flat and great views of this pristine lake

We loved visiting the light house and made it just in time for a tour at the end of low tide. The volunteers who work the shop are very firm on tide schedule and will ensure all visitors are off the island the moment the tide starts coming in.
Met some really incredible locals who said visiting even when the shop is closed to see the buoy tree in memory of crescent city individuals who have been lost at sea is a common practice.

I would love to find those responsible for spray painting the walls. they should serve jail time. the hike is easy and short.

We often bring friends and family, especially kids. At 6'2" I will bump my head on the ceiling in places, and. looking up you'll trip on nobby places on floor. The entire walk is slower than the milage indicates and outside part hot and dry in summer, carry water if you bring kids.

Such and amazing view and close to my campground. The reflection off the lake of lassen peak was so beautiful! Manzanita campground was crowded but also has some awesome amenities and located in such a great spot! I loved this little loop you don’t even have to do the whole thing you could just walk around find the perfect view and chill! Also stayed around end of July 2017

Enjoyed the trail it is always calming to be around the waters edge.

Peaceful walk even if there was smoke in the air from a fire on the backside of Lassen. Maybe next time we might try kayaking.

The trail was easy and it had good views.

We loved this hike! They are in the process of upgrading the trail areas, but it’s still a great area to hike. Good loops for those who want to get back to their cars. No road noise and few people.

A gentle easy loop around this very pleasant lake. Great views of Mount Lassen that reflect on the surface of the water. Ducks and fish and deers in abundance.

Interesting cave. Rough ground to walk on. Be sure to have a good light source. We can check it off our bucket list.

Easy and beautiful

Excellent. Previous reviews say it well. Note: your smart phone flashlight will NOT suffice (unless you like running the risk of stubbing your toes or tripping). Note regarding dogs: a previous reviewer cautioned dog owners regarding tender paws and lava rock. Here's my point of view: if your dog primarily hangs out in the house or on a backyard lawn then you may want to be careful about taking your dog through. The lava rock underfoot is dirt and mud covered, but it does poke out in multiple places and could hurt a tender paw. If your dog regularly walks or hikes with you on varied terrain including cement, gravel, rocks, etc. and you take reasonable precautions about which path your furry friend takes in the cave, you should be fine. My husky walks and hikes frequently; his paw pads had no problem with the cave floor.

What an awesome experience. Bring your flashlights or you won’t make it through!! A short walk up well established steps leads you right to the opening of the cave. Within minutes you are inside the lava tubes. We went early in the morning after a rainstorm and could see water crystals on the roof of the lava tubes. Easy enough for kids but hold their hands because of the rough rocky ground. Definitely a must stop if in the area

I had an outstanding time at Lassen. There were only a handful of people in the park it seemed all morning. So peaceful! I decided to take a lap around the lake and get some shots after I finished Mill Creek

Tons of bugs on this easy hike around the lake but you right by water so it’s to be expected. Definitely make sure you were bug deterrent before going. Lake was peaceful and beautiful with ducks floating all over and some people fishing of the side and on the lake. Super easy hike. More for picture moments than anything. Lassen Peak was right behind still with smoke on its peak and looked beautiful reflecting off the water.
