Plenty of parking before 10am but fills up after. Moderate hike is right but made more challenging by muddy conditions. Walking sticks are really helpful for folks who need extra support. Not worth it if you’re doing it for the waterfall alone—though the canyon views are incredible. You’ll hear the helicopters overhead, so it feels less remote than it is. Fine outing overall but probably wouldn’t do it again.

Muddy with rain, almost died 2 times

Great hike. It was muddy for us because it just rained, so really slick at some points. At used walking sticks in and out. The water fall is a cool view, but the canyon itself is amazing scenery at the top. Just over 2 hours with lots of picture taking breaks.

Great trail too bad it was too misty to see the overlook! i have friends who have done it a handful of times and never seen the overlook. Very muddy.

12/5/2018 - girl swept from rocks and died while taking a photo. Three people died at once in 13 when swept from a ledge, a man in ‘16, 2 girls at once in ‘08 were also swept from the ledge and died. These are the deaths I can rattle off - there are more and there have been countless close calls, serious injuries, and sea and air rescues from this trail.

The county has installed a fence and gate and monitors the opening and closing of it DAILY, WHEN IT IS CLOSED, IT IS CLOSED FOR A REASON. THINKING OTHERWISE IS A MISTAKE. When it is closed it is because we are in a period of large, unpredictable surf. LULLS AS LONG AS THIRTY MINUTES CAN OCCUR BEFORE SERIES OF BIG WAVES COME, SEEMINGLY OUT OF NOWHERE, AND CAN EASILY CATCH YOU OFF YOUR GUARD. THE MULTIPLE DROWNINGS AT THIS SPOT ARE NOT BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE SWIMMING. THEY WERE SWEPT FROM THE ROCKS WHEN BIG WAVES CAME AS THEY WERE ATTEMPTING TO TAKE PHOTOS.

MAKING A CHOICE TO DISRESPECT AND DISREGARD THESE WARNINGS PUTS YOU AND OUR TINY ISLAND COMMUNITY’S FIRST RESPONDERS IN SERIOUS DANGER. The group that lost their friend/girlfriend that day, left the parking lot as 4 and hiked out as 3. Please let that sink in. It CAN happen to you.

When down to see the waterfalls from the Do not pass sign. It is slippery just need to be careful and stay low and go slow :) but you do need to able to hold yourself up with the ropes and trees and able to balance yourself.
Nature is very generous there are tons of trees, veins, roots to hold on to. I managed to go down and up without getting muddy. I didn’t even get mud on my hand.

Seeing this Water falls close by is amazing! It’s so worth the little slipperiness:)

*But it will be very hard to do if you are wearing slippers or sandals.

It was a fun adventurous hike and the water falls at the end was so amazing and so powerful.
My boyfriend and I started bit late (around 3pm and we finished it around 6:30pm) so it got really dark on the way back so we had to use the flash light on our phone to navigate the trail.

I recommend everybody to start before 1pm to be safe.

And there are many path and trails to get to the water falls (Some people likes to go by the rocks near the river and some people are more comfortable going through and under the trees etc...)

The advices is TO STAY near BY THE RIVER and follow the river up. Instead of climbing up high into the bamboo forest or too much into the jungle.
And you will be fine !!!

Young life lost the day we were planning to visit. Not worth it, at least in the winter when the tide is high and extremely dangerous. Be smart and be safe if you do hike it. Never turn your back to the ocean.

beautiful half day hike.

Great little trail. Beach is beautiful and not very crowded. Short hike down hill on the way there. A bit muddy, but possible for all ages at a steady pace.
Keep in mind when going to the rocks, that when the tide is high, the water is over them and not safe to travel. Be sure not to be over there when the tide comes in. Safety first.

Great views of Waimea canyon! The waterfall is a little bit small but overall, great hike!

Visited today (12/8) and several “do not pass” signs and a tall fence line the road. Did not attempt but could see several others that had managed to climb down.

It’s more of a walk as others have stated. There is a $10.00 entrance fee. There are times parking can be challenging because it gets crowded. If you can wait it out, the breathtaking views and picturesque background is completely worth the $10.00.

Nice views across the canyon. Waterfall plateau is small, but definitely worth it. All in all a very nice and well maintained trail!

Tried going today (12/7) and the entrance gate is locked. Heard of others hopping the fence to go out but did not attempt.

Did this today and it gets steep and extremely muddy. Beginning of the trail had some overlooks with good visibility, but deeper into the hike there was heavy cloud coverage so not much of a view at the vista. Took us approx 2.5 hours total, most of the time spent navigating slippery conditions at the end.

Took us 3hr and 40min. The way back up is definitely harder but not impossible! The view point at the end is the best thing I’ve ever seen. Love this trail!!!

I brought 2 of my sisters to this hike- there are sections of the trail that were muddy and very slippery. The views of the canyon are the most beautiful. The waterfalls are nice but not as dramatic. All in all, a good day hike.

One thing I should say is all the reviews need a good read before you go. All of them have some valid information. Its not a hard trail walking wise. But rather as I like to think of it a "all 4s" trail. You will use your arms just as much as your legs.

I used the tracked of the mapped route on here lots. If you feel like its not the way you are probably right. Looking on here helped lots

Stay close to the river. if you start loosing the sound of the river you are definitely not heading on the right track. Look for other peoples tracks.

The rocks and trees are slippery. Do not jump onto or off anything. Everything is muddy. There is lots of things to hold onto for most of the way.

The trail is not all the way to the falls. ( the one mapped out on here) you get to the end where there is 3 streams. Go between the two streams on the right. Stay right the whole way up. most of it is walking on the rocks in the river.

Beautiful but challenging mentally.

lastly. Spoke to two ladies at the waterfall. They said most people don't get to the waterfall just because it's so tough to find the way

DO NOT GO HERE! You will put your life and those of our brave first responders at risk! A 23 yr old died here yesterday. There have been so many deaths. Why would you go? Irresponsible for this site to even allow it to be listed.

Don’t mess around here this time of year! A 23 year old girl was swept off the trail out to sea and killed here yesterday and they have yet to find her body. DO NOT ATTEMPT WHEN SURF IS HIGH!!!

This is a great trail with a great destination, but....the day I hiked in (20 mins down on a very slippery down hill trail) I was chased out by fire and rescue swimmers who were there to recover a body. So no joke, when the surf is high this can be a very dangerous place. Waves can reach the “top shelf” of the beach rocks. Use your discretion!! Easier climbing out than descending. Have fun, be safe.

So fun. Like an amusement park of tree roots, muddy foot holds, spectacular views.

Pretty muddy for first two miles. I was glad I had a trekking pole with me, but I was just wearing cross training shoes and didn't fall on my backside. Trail was relatively easy until you get to Nounou West trail, then it gets harder to the top. The trails were well marked, despite lots of mud/tree debris covering the trail. The views were very nice from the top and during the hike; good variety of trees and plants.

awesome views, at the end very muddy.

Got up early and headed off about 5:30am. Trail was dry for the most part. Surprised by a wild pig snorting at us in the dark. What a wonderful place to watch the sunrise! I would highly recommend the hike if you have the time.

Did this trail this morning. nice and dry. great views from the top

As a novice hiker, this trail was still very doable. It had rained a lot the day before which made the way down slippery and slow. Would not do this hike in bad weather - would be both difficult and views of the canyon wouldn't be great. As it was, we had spectacular canyon views. Didn't go all the way to the waterfall because of limited time (the hike to the canyon and back took 2 hrs). If you have a fear of heights, drive to the trail head may be tough for you (windy roads overlooking canyon)

Super quick and easy hike. Did not take the kids on it but would have been an easy one to take the kids on. Great views. Beware most hikes in Hawaii are slippery if is raining or had the day before.

Today was a great change of pace since it wash much drier and clearer than yesterday’s run of the Sleeping Giant (West Trail)! Actually got some good views!

This trail is much longer but more gradual than the west approach. Both are great though, just depends if you’re looking for a short yet intense hike up, or longer / more gradual incline.

Ran this trail Car-to-Car (to the very top) in 50 minutes exactly
