I'm writing this as a warning -- I was going to do this trail, but today when we visited the museum nearby, there was a sign up warning visitors about this trail. Please be aware that this trail is NOT meant for hiking and isn't kept as a hiking trail; a lot of it is overgrown and it's hard to see where you could fall through. Someone fell just last week and had to be rescued.

Basically, although people may say it's worth it, just be smart. There are plenty of other amazing trails in this park.

Did the trail 4 days ago. Great views along the trail. muddy in some areas. Avoid after the rain- looks like it wold be very slippery and dangerous. Trekking poles or a walking stick would be a great idea for navigating the muddy areas. We stopped at the picnic tables.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the great view at the end that was supposed to make it all worth it :( it was really foggy and you could barely see the people on the vista point. The trail itself is way below average to me. The downhill is sketchy when wet and you only get views at the end, and the entire time you're walking through the most boring jungle. Definitely not worth it if it was raining and you're suspecting overcast.

Great hike! We were there the next day after the rain and it was quite muddy. Otherwise it was amazing.

Such a fun hike. Challenging, but not so much that you’re dead after. Definitely wear shoes with good traction- teva’s style or actual boots. Best if followed up with happy hour at Lava Lava Beach Club!

Was on the easy side of moderate rained about 1/2 of the hike can be slippery in spots so be prepared to get muddy

beautiful trail with some parts to get your heart pumping haha.

Super muddy but well worth it. Most of these reviews will cover what to expect (views, cliff, climbing). Definitely worth the struggle.

Beautiful, totally enjoyed this hike in combination with kayaking, crossing a river and getting totally wet, and seeing waterfalls.

Best hike in Kauai!!! Be carful and wear appropriate shoes. It’s quite hard because slippery. The view is the best.

Unbelievable hike. The views never end and every corner you turn, it's keeps getting better. The finale overlooking the ocean is truly special. A bit muddy as you're weaving through some wooded areas, but well worth it. This one takes some beating, anywhere in the world!

We did this hike with a toddler in a backpack.

We did not have 4WD so had to walk along the muddy road to get to the trail head. No biggie... just make sure to allow for time.

A good portion of the trail is covered. Quite open and very hot closer to the top.

Great views and some cool little spots for the nugget to explore.

Got caught in heavy rain on the way back on the road. I imagine parts of this trail would be very slick when wet.

Me and my wife did this hike today!!! EPIC!!! Don’t let the rain fool you. Once you get out on the ridge, the clouds cleared up and we saw some of the best views. This hike is definitely doable... but it is very slippery. I would definitely recommend wearing hiking boots. This is the best hike in the park! The end of it is pretty sketchy, especially because it was wet. Just go slow and use your judgment. I will definitely do this one again!!!

Excellent trail. Nearly all downhill en route to the end views and therefore entirely uphill heading back. Varying jungle forests and lots of roots to climb over but the views at the end are dramatic and worth it. Nā Pali coast views never let you down, so keep going even down to the dangerous precipice.

we took the path to the golf course and it was a beautiful view back to the Bay. We walked around the hotel past the infinity pool and then went to follow the shoreline access sign, however it had been grown in with plants and guinea grass and was inaccessible to get down to the beach. Watch out because it drops off and if you miss step you will fall down the edge.

Incredible views! Going down is pretty easy when it's not too muddy. Going back is all uphill and slippery when wet.

Significantly less muddy than the Kuamo’o trail leading up to the summit. Can’t speak on how strenuous this side is because we hiked up from Kuamo’o and descended here. Better views of the valley from this side. A little overgrown in some spots.

Really cool varying ecosystems as you increase in elevation. You can get by with sneakers if you don’t mind getting muddy but the first 2 miles are fairly slick with 2” mud after it rains. Upper section to the summit is drier but they clay is still pretty slick. Summit offers almost 360 degree views of Wailua and Kapa’a.

Awesome! Not the best trail I've ever hiked, but this thing packs so much raw exposure and scenery into such a short distance that it might be the best value per linear foot I've experienced. Even clouded in, this is an incredible experience.

Very muddy following a heavy rain but still managed to get some good miles on dry trail as I got higher in elevation. Easy to follow trail connections and a STELLAR view. It rained at the summit on the ridge when I was up there and put on quite the sunrise show of rainbows. Loved every second.

Me and my girlfriend did this trail today, and it was fantastic. Some of the best views we've ever seen. A couple quick tips to help you plan for the hike:

First, getting there: go to the kalalau lookout and park in the normal parking lot. You'll walk up to the view surrounded by a green fence. When looking at the valley, on your far left there is a gate that has a small latch that can be opened. Go through this gate and you're on your way.

Second, difficulty: I'll start by saying that if this wasn't on a ridge it would probably be rated moderate. What makes it hard is the narrowness of the trail and the fact that there is steep ridge immediately to your right. Don't let this stop you, as it is easily manageable and views are breathtaking.

There are several lookout points along the way. As early as 10 minutes in, you'll want to stop and take a picture.

The ridge line will pucker you right up.

Awesome day of hiking today. There’s even a small cave to explore. The tortoises were a nice bonus as well. The views... well words can’t express it. You have to see it for yourself!!

This is a GORGEOUS hike!!! The views are outstanding. Like others have said, keep going after the picnic table. 360 degrees of views. There is mud and some scrambling, but bring one of the discarded walking sticks left by previous hikers to aid you a long the way.

This is hike hosts my favorite views in Kaua’i!

If you are in Kaua’i this is a must see. If you can get here slightly before sunrise this will be one of the best memories you take home with you.

It’s an easy walk but if you go far enough it can be good exercise. There are multiple trails leading to the same place. Many people jog it as well but you miss some of the views on the jogging trail. Not easy enough for those who can’t go up hill around rocks when necessary but good for adults and children.

So rewarding. The trail is not as hard as they lead you to believe but I can see it being more difficult for those who don't hike regularly. We hiked this trail and the Nu'alolo trail. Both incredible but would probably recommend this one because the views of Kalalau Valley are unmatched.

Decent hike, mostly shaded, great views at the end. Slippery and strenuous, took approx 4 hours with a short break at the turnaround. Popular trail, get there early and hike with pono.
