Beautiful. We hiked a day after it had rained, and it was super muddy, I slipped and fell :) be the mud!

There was definitely some scrambling, I wouldn't recommend this trail for anyone carrying a child.

I'm writing this as a warning -- I was going to do this trail, but today when we visited the museum nearby, there was a sign up warning visitors about this trail. Please be aware that this trail is NOT meant for hiking and isn't kept as a hiking trail; a lot of it is overgrown and it's hard to see where you could fall through. Someone fell just last week and had to be rescued.

Basically, although people may say it's worth it, just be smart. There are plenty of other amazing trails in this park.

Best bang for your buck on napali coast views

Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the great view at the end that was supposed to make it all worth it :( it was really foggy and you could barely see the people on the vista point. The trail itself is way below average to me. The downhill is sketchy when wet and you only get views at the end, and the entire time you're walking through the most boring jungle. Definitely not worth it if it was raining and you're suspecting overcast.

Great hike! We were there the next day after the rain and it was quite muddy. Otherwise it was amazing.

It’s a short hike but with all that mud and roots, feels like much more! Fun challenge, even when unprepared. The bath at the bottom is worth the struggle of getting there. DEFINITELY recommend grabbing a walking stick. Little known secret, there is a spot adjacent to the entrance of the trail up top that has ropes tied to trees that you can rappel down the side of the mountain in about half the time. There is a sign saying not to use that route but... that’s up to you. Overall a fun adventure- just be prepared to get dirty!

Was on the easy side of moderate rained about 1/2 of the hike can be slippery in spots so be prepared to get muddy

beautiful trail with some parts to get your heart pumping haha.

Super muddy but well worth it. Most of these reviews will cover what to expect (views, cliff, climbing). Definitely worth the struggle.

Beautiful, totally enjoyed this hike in combination with kayaking, crossing a river and getting totally wet, and seeing waterfalls.

Best hike in Kauai!!! Be carful and wear appropriate shoes. It’s quite hard because slippery. The view is the best.

Unbelievable hike. The views never end and every corner you turn, it's keeps getting better. The finale overlooking the ocean is truly special. A bit muddy as you're weaving through some wooded areas, but well worth it. This one takes some beating, anywhere in the world!

We did this hike with a toddler in a backpack.

We did not have 4WD so had to walk along the muddy road to get to the trail head. No biggie... just make sure to allow for time.

A good portion of the trail is covered. Quite open and very hot closer to the top.

Great views and some cool little spots for the nugget to explore.

Got caught in heavy rain on the way back on the road. I imagine parts of this trail would be very slick when wet.

We did this hike with a toddler in tow (in a backpack). We managed to get our rental car part way along the gravel, muddy road. We walked the rest of the road to a little beach. (A great spot for a snack and to play in the water - which we did on the way back).

The road was very wet and muddy. Be prepared to get your shoes wet!

We continued from the beach to the rock quarry and to Mokolea point.

There were lots of really cool things for the baby to see along the way. It did get a little sketchy out along the rocks but worth it. I’m not too sure how far out we hiked ... but we were not disappointed.

This was a great “go exploring” trail right beside the bird refuge.

Me and my wife did this hike today!!! EPIC!!! Don’t let the rain fool you. Once you get out on the ridge, the clouds cleared up and we saw some of the best views. This hike is definitely doable... but it is very slippery. I would definitely recommend wearing hiking boots. This is the best hike in the park! The end of it is pretty sketchy, especially because it was wet. Just go slow and use your judgment. I will definitely do this one again!!!

Well traveled trail. Great views from the top. If you don’t want to deal with the slippery first half of the trail, bypass the original trail head and stop at the next intersection up the road. It’s a 4X4 road that takes you to the midway point on the canyon trail. There are other trails off the 4X4 road but they are all marked.

Excellent trail. Nearly all downhill en route to the end views and therefore entirely uphill heading back. Varying jungle forests and lots of roots to climb over but the views at the end are dramatic and worth it. Nā Pali coast views never let you down, so keep going even down to the dangerous precipice.

Incredible views! Going down is pretty easy when it's not too muddy. Going back is all uphill and slippery when wet.

USE A WALKING STICK! I don’t know how people did it without one. Super muddy. Super slick. But WORTH IT IN THE END!!

Awesome site to come play in.

Awesome! Not the best trail I've ever hiked, but this thing packs so much raw exposure and scenery into such a short distance that it might be the best value per linear foot I've experienced. Even clouded in, this is an incredible experience.

Great views of the North Coast accompany the easy trails at the beginning of this hike. The views soon are covered by the jungle that you will be scrambling through. Muddy hills provide exciting, at times challenging, hiking but after less than a mile of scrambling, you'll come across boardwalks which provide easy trails once again.

The boardwalks carry you through the jungle and across the bog to a lookout point which was unfortunately thick with fog. The journey was definitely worth the time, the view would have just been the cherry.

Highly recommended to moderate hikers in sturdy sandals or shoes that can handle some mud.

Me and my girlfriend did this trail today, and it was fantastic. Some of the best views we've ever seen. A couple quick tips to help you plan for the hike:

First, getting there: go to the kalalau lookout and park in the normal parking lot. You'll walk up to the view surrounded by a green fence. When looking at the valley, on your far left there is a gate that has a small latch that can be opened. Go through this gate and you're on your way.

Second, difficulty: I'll start by saying that if this wasn't on a ridge it would probably be rated moderate. What makes it hard is the narrowness of the trail and the fact that there is steep ridge immediately to your right. Don't let this stop you, as it is easily manageable and views are breathtaking.

There are several lookout points along the way. As early as 10 minutes in, you'll want to stop and take a picture.

The ridge line will pucker you right up.

This is a GORGEOUS hike!!! The views are outstanding. Like others have said, keep going after the picnic table. 360 degrees of views. There is mud and some scrambling, but bring one of the discarded walking sticks left by previous hikers to aid you a long the way.

We started at 11:00 am ish. Got to the river at 12:25. Rested there for a hour, then went back up. Ascent took 1 hour 39 minutes. We are a fit couple and we found this to be a challenge. Like idiots we left our water purifier and camelbacks at home. Boy they would have made this trek a bit less strenuous. The hike to the river is an accomplishment, not a new vista. You get that going down. Some very steep and muddy sections made the descent more difficult than others I have hiked. All in all a fun hike for those looking to be challenged.

Loved the views and the hike. Great hike !

So rewarding. The trail is not as hard as they lead you to believe but I can see it being more difficult for those who don't hike regularly. We hiked this trail and the Nu'alolo trail. Both incredible but would probably recommend this one because the views of Kalalau Valley are unmatched.

Decent hike, mostly shaded, great views at the end. Slippery and strenuous, took approx 4 hours with a short break at the turnaround. Popular trail, get there early and hike with pono.
