Plenty of parking before 10am but fills up after. Moderate hike is right but made more challenging by muddy conditions. Walking sticks are really helpful for folks who need extra support. Not worth it if you’re doing it for the waterfall alone—though the canyon views are incredible. You’ll hear the helicopters overhead, so it feels less remote than it is. Fine outing overall but probably wouldn’t do it again.

Great hike. It was muddy for us because it just rained, so really slick at some points. At used walking sticks in and out. The water fall is a cool view, but the canyon itself is amazing scenery at the top. Just over 2 hours with lots of picture taking breaks.

Great trail too bad it was too misty to see the overlook! i have friends who have done it a handful of times and never seen the overlook. Very muddy.

Date:Dec.9th 2018
It was a fun adventurous hike and the water falls at the end was so amazing and so powerful.
My boyfriend and I started bit late (around 3pm and we finished it around 6:30pm) so it got really dark on the way back so we had to use the flash light on our phone to navigate the trail.

I recommend everybody to start before 1pm to be safe.

And there are many path and trails to get to the water falls (Some people likes to go by the rocks near the river and some people are more comfortable going through and under the trees etc...)

The advices is TO STAY near BY THE RIVER and follow the river up. Instead of climbing up high into the bamboo forest or too much into the jungle.
And you will be fine !!!

beautiful half day hike.

Great views of Waimea canyon! The waterfall is a little bit small but overall, great hike!

Nice views across the canyon. Waterfall plateau is small, but definitely worth it. All in all a very nice and well maintained trail!

Tried going today (12/7) and the entrance gate is locked. Heard of others hopping the fence to go out but did not attempt.

Did this today and it gets steep and extremely muddy. Beginning of the trail had some overlooks with good visibility, but deeper into the hike there was heavy cloud coverage so not much of a view at the vista. Took us approx 2.5 hours total, most of the time spent navigating slippery conditions at the end.

Took us 3hr and 40min. The way back up is definitely harder but not impossible! The view point at the end is the best thing I’ve ever seen. Love this trail!!!

Hiked this - beautiful views of the canyon

I brought 2 of my sisters to this hike- there are sections of the trail that were muddy and very slippery. The views of the canyon are the most beautiful. The waterfalls are nice but not as dramatic. All in all, a good day hike.

One thing I should say is all the reviews need a good read before you go. All of them have some valid information. Its not a hard trail walking wise. But rather as I like to think of it a "all 4s" trail. You will use your arms just as much as your legs.

I used the tracked of the mapped route on here lots. If you feel like its not the way you are probably right. Looking on here helped lots

Stay close to the river. if you start loosing the sound of the river you are definitely not heading on the right track. Look for other peoples tracks.

The rocks and trees are slippery. Do not jump onto or off anything. Everything is muddy. There is lots of things to hold onto for most of the way.

The trail is not all the way to the falls. ( the one mapped out on here) you get to the end where there is 3 streams. Go between the two streams on the right. Stay right the whole way up. most of it is walking on the rocks in the river.

Beautiful but challenging mentally.

lastly. Spoke to two ladies at the waterfall. They said most people don't get to the waterfall just because it's so tough to find the way

So fun. Like an amusement park of tree roots, muddy foot holds, spectacular views.

Pretty muddy for first two miles. I was glad I had a trekking pole with me, but I was just wearing cross training shoes and didn't fall on my backside. Trail was relatively easy until you get to Nounou West trail, then it gets harder to the top. The trails were well marked, despite lots of mud/tree debris covering the trail. The views were very nice from the top and during the hike; good variety of trees and plants.

awesome views, at the end very muddy.

As a novice hiker, this trail was still very doable. It had rained a lot the day before which made the way down slippery and slow. Would not do this hike in bad weather - would be both difficult and views of the canyon wouldn't be great. As it was, we had spectacular canyon views. Didn't go all the way to the waterfall because of limited time (the hike to the canyon and back took 2 hrs). If you have a fear of heights, drive to the trail head may be tough for you (windy roads overlooking canyon)

Super quick and easy hike. Did not take the kids on it but would have been an easy one to take the kids on. Great views. Beware most hikes in Hawaii are slippery if is raining or had the day before.

This hike was tough because of how slippery and muddy it was. The weather in the winter is just unpredictable but it was simply epic... go to the end, even if it’s a bit scary.

Wear hiking shoes or trail runners ... some people were wearing crappy running shoes and were sliding all over. One couple was barefoot and that seemed way better than bad shoes.

But the view from the edge is insane. The clouds would roll in for a few minutes and then open up to see the Napali Coast.

We really wanted to do the Kalalau trail but it’s closed. This was the next best for sure!

My favorite trail in Kauai has to be the Makaleha Hike. This hike is rated as hard and it lives up to its reputation. Even with a map, we had to backtrack several times to find the correct trail. I live for adventure and this hike checked all the boxes. It was challenging, full of new scenery including; thick bamboo forests, traversing rivers, using vines to climb down steep sections and of course, finding hidden waterfalls. This hike was the perfect end to a perfect tropical sojourn.

This is one amazing trail. Ensure that you bring solid hiking shoes or shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. The trail is super muddy and slick in the upper areas. Slippers or sandals are not recommended.

The trail starts off pretty fast going downhill for quite a while before it opens up. There are numerous changes in topography and foliage. By the time you get to the end of the trail, You are in for a treat. The trail opens up into amazing vistas of green and red mountains dropping all the way down to the beautiful blue Pacific ocean below.

If you are not afraid of heights, you could walk down to the very end of the trail, however of course, you do so at your own risk, as each side has 1000’ drops to the canyons below.

Now that you have enjoyed the wonderful vistas and had a nice lunch, it’s time for the charge all the way back up to the top. It gets a little tedious, since you’ve already seen everything once. but once you get to the cloud forest, it feels great.

Can be tricky in some parts but we saw children and adults in sandals completing the hike-take your time and you should be ok. Really enjoyed it! That being said, if it had been raining I would have avoided this hike that day.

Awesome trail ! Pictures don’t even do this hike justice, best kept secret in Kauai! Don’t go on a cloudy day, wait for a clear day to really see the amazing terrain and helicopters flying BELOW you!

The view is spectacular !

This hike was pretty incredible. I highly recommend it but know that it's a little tricky in some spots. It was definitely slippery when we went. Trekking poles are highly recommended and just take your time. The views were amazing throughout the entire hike.

Definitely not recommended for kids . We almost made it till the end with a 8,7, 5 and a baby . It’s very challenging with kids . Doable without.
The last half mile is pretty hard cause it’s dense and you’d need to go over and below a lot of trees and branches
You would need to cross a the river a few times .

FYI it’s very very muddy and slippery but a lot fun !

Epic hike. Definitely a little scary as many points on hike you are on step away from falling off a cliff. Take your time and it’s worth it!

didn't get the best view due to some overhanging clouds however still a gorgeous site to see. the 3 miles downhill feels like a breeze... until you realize you have to go back up. make sure you give yourself ample time. I rushed through it alone and made it in about 2.5hrs round trip (hustling and regret it) the upward climb sucked for me. bring lots of water and snacks.

the view is perfect in the right conditions, try to go in the mid morning or early afternoon. I wouldn't start this hike after 4pm. 3pm is even pushing it for winter sunset (6pm)
