Great hike in Kauai for the amazing vista at the end. Interesting hike in closed in forest until then. PLEASE pick up your toilet paper when you pee in the outdoors. It doesn’t take that much effort. So discouraging to see tp all along the trail!!

This hike is spectacular! As middle-aged, active people, this hike wasn’t ‘difficult ‘ ; however, we went on a dry day. If it is raining or has recently rained, it can be challenging. We went past the railing at the end of the trail; had it been wet, we wouldn’t risk it. We’re constantly overcoming our fear of heights, so venturing down to the plateau was a big step. There is an even more precarious end and I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GOING OUT THERE! The view of the valley, the coastline, the ocean will be imprinted in your minds and hearts forever. Casually walking and an hour stop at the end made our trip total, 4.5 hours.

Unexciting path leading to stunning vista!

Knocked out this hike today and the conditions were great. It took us about an hour and 35 minutes going all the way back to the hidden falls and about an hour and 10 minutes out. I turned on my Strava app and it logged 3.2 miles in and 2.2 out. I think most of the extra mileage can be attributed to me walking all over the place instead of strictly staying on the “path.” As others have said, there is more than one path at many points, but as long as you stay near the water and follow the occasional cairns and you’ll be fine.

I’d say plan for 3 hours of hiking and about 4-5 miles depending on if you have to backtrack (or zig-zag a lot like we did).

Awesome hike. Beautiful views of the south shore, Surrounding mountains and local whales and turtles.
Volcanic rock, packed soil and sand along this trail.
Enjoy

Amazing. Did it with our 1.5 year old in tow so it was a bit harder to maneuver over and under the trees but soooo worth it. Trail is all over the place but just stay by the river and you will see it show up on one side of the other. We hiked in the river a lot of the time. Happy hiking!

Great trail, some hard slippery mud makes going down harder than going back up. Took us about 3 hours, not including time spent at the vistas at the bottom. Shaded and forested the entire way, no great views until you get to the end, but when you do they are spectacular. Really cool exposed ridge line at the end to get great photos and your heart pumping. GF wore chacos and got some blisters, so maybe wear shoes or boots to tie down your feet with some of the slipping.

Leave early in the morning to get the best views, avoid clouds, and avoid crowds. We were first on the trail and it was well worth it.

On weekends hunters are in the area. A sign recommends wearing bright clothing but we didn’t get hunted so maybe not a big deal.

Nice. Great views. Not strenuous hike. Would have liked more history on heiau along trail. Did see whales spouting / a few turtles. We went farther to spend a relaxing hour or more on beach.

2nd time doing this hike & it’s just as breathtaking every time! Very steep downhill climb then right back up it. Very slippery, lots of mud. Saw double rainbows and enjoyed a pleasant mist from the waterfall at the bottom. Wouldn’t take kids or the faint of heart as this trail is extremely steep at some points, prepare to get muddy.

A relatively unassuming first few miles gives way to a truly spectacular and one of a kind view on the spine. This is about as dramatic a trail as any out there in the last half mile. I’d compare it to Angels Landing in Zion, without a hundred other people jockeying for position (we saw 3-4 people in 3 hours out on the trail). Your legs will be cursing you on the way back up, but your mind will still be busy thinking about the view you just witnessed, so it won’t matter. It can get VERY muddy, so be prepared with good hiking boots, and if you enjoy your cartilage, poles. Would have loved to take the Nualolo Cliff Trail on the way back, as I think that would have enhanced the hike as a whole, but unfortunately we did this hike while that trail was still closed in 2016. Would definitely do this trail again, if only for the chance to sit on the edge of the world for 20 more minutes!

Extremely hot, quite average views compared to other hikes in the mountain.

best rewarding view so far among all our hikes! all downhill and then the harder part is coming back up. muddy in a few patches and hiking shoes needed to avoid slips

Officially a Must Do hike!!! The views at the end are unreal, so MAKE SURE you go on a clear day. There isn't much to look at on the way so the payoff at the end is vital. Go as far as you're comfortable going down the ridge at the end, the views get better and better (Obligatory "Be careful", don't die). Solid cardio on the way back up for sure (2 hrs constantly going uphill), but the hike itself wasn't too difficult.

Great out and back hike. If you’re looking for something with views the whole way, this one isn’t it, but if you’re good hiking in some tree cover until the end, the views are 100% worth it. Views get even better if you get out onto the ridge cliffs. Could see how it would be difficult when it has recently rained, but with good conditions we did out and back in about 2 hours 15, not including the photo taking at the cliffs.

Amazing hike. Slippery in some spots so wear appropriate hiking shoes. Great workout, little more then 10k and worth every step. View at the end is incredible. Enjoy!

The hike is technically off limits but lots of people are still doing it. The entrance I used was to the right of the stone wall (if you’re looking at the falls) and past the green fence. You’ll have to hop the guardrail and you’ll see a brown sign that says Danger. It was pretty doable until I got to the last red rope. It was extremely slippery and I lost my footing but thankfully was able to hold onto the rope (wear hiking shoes, sneakers didn’t cut it!). Just go slow and be mindful with each step. You can get up close to the waterfall and even go behind it if you’re willing to get soaked. I went around 11am and saw double rainbows. It was so beautiful.

Really fun hike !!! My girlfriend and I did it yesterday. The map is not accurate and the trail is not that hard to find like others say, you have to look at the right and left side of the river anytime. You will always see a small path on one side ! Very nice hike if you like a bit of adventures :) go to the end, the last waterfall is the nicest one !!! I did it with my hiking boots and they did not get wet and I cross 3-4 times the river. Enjoy :)

Muddy, hard to find your way, etc. Won't lose your time: READ OTHERS REVIEW TO KNOW THE WAY

Very (very) muddy when I did it, that will definetly slow you down! I think it took 2 hours for those 2 miles (!). The view is nice, worth the effort.

Great hike, but do yourself a favor and do the loop along with Nu'alolo . To be done on a clear day for the best view

Amazing hike! The terrain showing on the app is not accurate. Nothing extremely steep except for a few boulders. DO NOT STOP at the Makaleha falls! The hidden falls are only 10 to 15min away and are absolutely beautiful! It is also the easiest part of the hike. Have fun hikers!

Tough. Muddy and there is a lot of crawling up through branches and trees in the jungle vs actual hiking. Path can be hard to follow. We had to turn back and find another path several times. We turned back 45 mins below the first falls because of how much time it consumed. It has been very rainy in Kauai this week so the conditions were rough. Be prepared for a long trek.

Great fun! Did this hike on 12/31. It’s a nice wide path with plenty of good places to put your feet. That said, it is very muddy and slippery, so be prepared to go slow. The last quarter mile is an awesome scramble... it was my favorite part of the hike besides the spectacular views. Keens or other sturdy shoe you don’t mind getting covered in mud encouraged. Highly recommend this hike!

Real hard. Real worth it at the end though. Just have patience. Bring plenty of water. Bring bug spray with you to apply in the way back after you jump in the waterfall at the end.

This is an excellent hike up a valley to a view point from where you can see 5-6 different waterfalls. Then you can choose which falls you want to hike further to. We chose the one furthest to the right which has a good place to jump into the pool below the falls. Here are some tips. First, this trail is exceptionally hard to follow. Most of the time I couldn’t tell if we were even on a trail. Luckily I had read this and we had hired a guide who knew the trail (though a few times he even lost the trail). Second, proper footwear is paramount. You are constantly hiking in and out of the river and when you are not in the river, the mud is very deep. Our guide luckily provided us with the amphibious rubber hiking booties that were perfect. Lastly, know your group. I brought my teenage daughters who are decent hikers and my wife who has gotten more nervous with age, and they didn’t care for all the mud and slippery rocks. But I loved it especially being the only one at the falls.

Great trail and worth the payoff at the end. Way down was a solid downhill jaunt and was a bit muddy and wet (typical for this area and not difficult with the appropriate footwear). Way back was more challenging cardio-wise but easier to navigate the mud and roots. We were able to complete the trail in just under 4 hours. We started the hike and 10am and would not recommend starting after 2pm due to changing trail conditions and darkness (sun sets around 6).

Beautiful scenery. Areas of the trail had many options and were not well marked. Recommend using the app to stay on track.

Easy hike with great views! Keep your eyes open for whales and lots of sea turtles swimming off the coast.

Trail closed, but can still stop to see the waterfall.

Great hike. Got a good tip from a local to go early in the morning before the clouds come in. Clear when I got to the vista and watched the clouds fill the valley and cover the peak on the way back. Mud made portions of the trail interesting and a few spots difficult, but overall a good workout over a short run with interesting puzzles along the way and a nice pay off at the end.
