My girlfriend and I are in our early 50s. 1.5 hours in and about the same out. Totally worth it once you get to the end.

This is hands down the best thing I’ve ever done. It took about 45 minutes each way and was fairly steep in some parts. The view at the end is absolutely spectacular as are the views on the walk there and back. We left at 7:30am and by the time we got back around 10am clouds were starting to roll in. Temperature was fine going out but starting to get hot on the return trip. I do not like heights and did find parts of this trail very scary however the friend I was walking with had no problems. Just take it slow if you’re feeling worried, the views are most definitely worth it.

Decent view at the end but the walk down has no views. Do yourself a favour and walk Nu’alolo Trail instead.

Wow wow wow. Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow.

This beats all of the other trails I’ve done in Hawaii in terms of views and in just 4km total.

You should absolutely do this. Take your big camera. Hell, just arrive here one morning and stay until sunset.

Awesome! Just do it!

Absolutely worth the trek! I went down in bare feet and up wit shoes on - it is extremely slippery and very steep. Also, you can get ticketed and fined as the trail is marked closed - do not enter. If you are feeling ballsy then go for it - the views at the end are amazingly ng and the falls are a nice treat to cool off before heading back up. Warning - ropes are NOT stable and can break at any moment so try not to use the rope for leverage.

Very steep in beginning, but worth it

Incredible views at the end of the trail. You must visit this trail if you enjoy the Napali coastline and all that it has to offer.

So beautiful! WeR shoes with spikes or you will be crab crawling down the first 1/2 mile. It is ver slippery even in dry conditions. Keep going all beat to the cliff but beware the trail is very narrow and sketchy in places. Not for those afraid of heights! Absolutely quiet and peaceful hike with final views of the Na Pali Coast - Amazing! PS - No flowers on the trail in August

Great hike! Challenging with the elevation drops and gains however worth the reward at the end!

My son and I had not originally planned on doing this trail. We started with the Awaawapuhi Trail. While admiring the amazing views at the end, another hiker told us that as good as these views were, those at the end of the Nualolo were better. We took the connector trail to decide for ourselves. He was right. The views were incredible, but it came with a price. Soaring sandstone cliffs jut out at impossible angles to the sea thousands of feet below. Punishing winds rip sand across the landscape while helicopters fly past. This hike was extremely hard. While the way out was fine, the hike back (which made our total hike 11 miles) was mostly uphill and very tough. At times shade is sparse as well. We forced ourselves to stop often to rest and drink lots of water as it was the heat of the day. In the end, this may have been the most spectacular hike we've ever done. It was definitely the hardest. Had we planned to do this hike, we would have done it the opposite direction we did. Many people said we were nuts for doing it the way we did. I don't disagree. Also, since we started at a different trailhead, we successfully hitched a ride from the Museum Shop back to our car.

This hike was exactly as advertised. Downhill on the way out through jungle-type setting that eventually opens up and finishes with jaw-dropping views. Wouldn't have minded some additional views along the way, but the end result will make you forget any complaints.

I have hiked all over the world and this is easily one of the coolest and most beautiful trails I've ever done. Especially, if you connect to the other trails towards the end.

The canyon views are truly breathtaking and the structure of the trail itself is really neat. At points it's like a puzzle trying to figure out the best steps to take. My kind of hiking!

I can understand why some non-hiking types would not like it, but if you enjoy a fun and unique trail with truly amazing views then this one should be at the top of your list.

That 2.2 miles steep going down and 2.2 miles steep going up is on a hard trail. Bring lots of water, trail is hot, hiking stick is good to have on this trail. View is good, you’re down the canyon and hit the Waimea river. But that 2.2 start and end trail is very hard. Seen some wild goat. Awesome

The reviews here a spot on. I'd recommend if it has been raining to do it a different day. The trail will be muddy and your climb out will not be fun along with damaging the trail. We wore shorts and short sleeve shirts, got scratched up a little but nothing too bad. It is overgrown but I prefer it that way sometimes, it cuts down on the crowds. The trail is well marked with colored tape in the trees. Views at the end are the best I found in Kauai. You can continue past the end waypoint on all trails but there is a lot of exposure so do so carefully.

One of the most beautiful trails I've ever done. This trail was definitely tricky, but not impossible. My 64 year old dad was able to do it without much issue (just needed to stop and rest a lot). To get here, drive all the way up to the Kalalau Lookout and go through the small gate on the left, right before the lookout spot. It starts with a decently steep downhill portion and then mostly evens out once you get to a clearing with some grass. The trail is pretty narrow, dropping to about 18in at some points with steep dropoffs at either side. When you get to the ridge there are portions with a lot of thick grasses/fern bushes on either side so wear long sleeves and pants if you want to avoid getting scratched up. If it has rained a lot recently I would NOT suggest this trail. This isn't one you want to slip and fall on.

Wear good shoes, stay aware of the trail conditions, get there early and you'll be fine.

Less traffic than Awa with a few more steep sections. Overall I’d call the terrain intermediate. Most of the trail is shaded in the trees without view but the last 1/4 makes up for it the monotony of the beginning. The trail “ended” at the overlook with a metal guardrail but the trail continues another 1/2 mile (or as far as you feel safe).

Mostly downhill on the way there, so a tougher uphill trek back up. Muddy in the beginning. Took us (mid-20’s, females) 1.5 hrs on the way there and 1 hr on the way back. VIEWS ARE SO WORTH IT THOUGH!! Make sure you go all the way to the end of the trail to the rocky look out.

The views are spectacular. Very muddy and slick when we went though.

I didn’t do the hike. Saw a group of 6 arguing with the police and getting ticketed at the top of the trail.

It has been very rainy and after watching many people approach the trail and head back, we went for it anyway (much to my anxious hubby’s dismay!) The trek down was slippery and harrowing, but the breathtaking prize at the bottom was worth every mud encrusted fingernail!
Be brave, you only live once and this journey made me teary-eyed at the beauty and the simple strength of the human spirit to do those things which others only dream of! Mahalo!

Incredible views down the ridge. No trail markings on the trail. Use caution and where good shoes/boots. Do not attempt in rainy conditions.

it was great bring bathing suit

Really amazing hike. We are a not particularly fit family (14, 12 husband wife) and while it was amazing on the way down, it was difficult but not terrible on the way back. The heights are big but not bone chilling. As long as your are not irrationally scared of heights, it’s fine. Views are to die for. Really spectacular.

One of the most beautiful trails in the world (not a hyperbole). Stunningly beautiful - the mountains stumble into the ocean. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the beach and the waterfall. Imo, this isn't a trail that you rush in and out of; Savor every moment of this remote, rugged landscape. The lush jungle on one side and the blues of the ocean on the other - this is my favorite hike in Hawaii, maybe the world (at least so far!).

This trail is not officially maintained. Much of it is between very pokey ferns and some is in woods. There is no view until the end. Not worth it. The Kalepa trail is much better for almost as good a view.
