This was fun for my children because there was not only obsidian, but there were huge chunks of pumice that they could lift because it is so light.

Challenging at the beginning, but once you make it past the initial incline it’s a very enjoyable hike. The view at the end is beautiful and there are some obstacles along the way that make it more enjoyable. Very dog friendly too.

Nothing to see but the view from the parking lot. You can’t get within 30feet of the creek. Bring your long camera lense.

Walked on a lot of stinky sand. Lots of flies. Couldn’t see any huge tufas you have to be on a boat for those.

Great hike and was able to take the dog with us. She did great and enjoyed the shallow creeks. Awesome view at the end of the trail.

The strenuous hike up to Fern Lake is very rewarding. Fern Lake is extremely beautiful all year round, with beautiful mountains surrounding the lake and several great beach spots to relax and have a snack/meal. The trail is a constant incline until you get to the Yost-Fern fork, after that it is extremely steep. Trekking poles and good boots are highly recommended. Dogs are great for this trail if they are trail trained.

Absolutely beautiful hike !

The trail is amazing when it snows

Perfect day for a perfect long hike (note: We continued to the far side of Gem Lake, 5 miles in from the trailhead and 5 miles back.......but if this hike isn’t rated “Hard”, I can’t imagine what would be. So to call it "Moderate" is a bit of an understatement, IMHO. However to think of it or categorize it as “Hard" might scare away a few hikers, and in truth this climb is do-able by most. Lots of loose rocks and scree. Hiking shoes or boots highly recommended. Advice: When in doubt the trails goes UP, (except on the way back, LOL)

Just missed the fall colors! But still a beautiful hike. Went mid morning and the weather was cool but perfect for hiking. First mile or so is when you gain the 600 or so elevation and then it is mostly easy and along a stream. Able to accomplish it slowly with a bad knee. Would be great for kids, dogs, and us creakier ones too!

Beautiful hike. About 2” of snow on most of the trail after the log crossing as you pass the Fern Lake trail.

Awesome Trail uphill and through some open brush ground from parking lot about a mile and then your next to the creek outlet from parker lake and then you get to the lake and you can hike around it to the left or right back to the trail you came in on... really beautiful in the fall season suggest going in afternoon and coming back as sun sets its really nice views

Spectacular and definitely difficult. Single track trail took us (in October) to Fern Lake which had cascading fall colors. There is a waterfall at a junction then the work begins getting to the lake.

Well worth it. I have new stem cell knees which I am happy to say have held up nicely. I brought my walking sticks and boy did I use them. Btw of you need help with your knees google Venkatesh Movva in Texas and Oklahoma.

The trail was clear.

It was a strenuous hike.

Wow. It is October and the colors are incredible right now. We headed up at 10am. It was hot at first then got windy and cold at Agnew. The dam was quite a site. The trail is easy to follow and maintained. It is noted as MODERATE but for me it was tougher. The altitude to begin with and the elevation climbing was what made it tough for me (I have two new stem cell treated knees!).

The weather was perfect.

Unearthly and a must visit Eastern Sierra spot.

It’s mind blowing!

This hike was a great afternoon outing. It is pretty steep but certainly doable. The lake is picturesque at the top.

This hike has several factors that make it a (5) star hike: Incredible vistas, beautiful natural features and a great payoff at the end. It was approximately 3.5 miles to Parker Lake, so it is approximately 7 miles round-trip.

I would describe this hike as very accessible and it is appropriate for a variety of ages / fitness levels; That said, the only negative is that the hike is well-traversed, so expect to see lots of people on the trail. Despite the amount of people who visit, the trail is surprisingly clean!

Have fun!

Hiked this with my family. Beautiful creek in the Aspen Trees on the way up. Stunning view of the Parker Lake and waterfalls above. Awesome view of Mono Lake on the way back down. Would love to visit again.

Great view from the geological area. Would recommend for astrophotographers!

Really nice hike

Easy trail to see unique features. Pretty around sunset.

We did just the 0.9mi out and back trail near the crater as the sun was setting. Couldn't really see the crater very well.

Amazing hike. Great with kids and a large group.

Great hike, beautiful stop about 2 miles up with a nice rest at the waterfall.

However this is not a 3.2 mile hike - we clocked more like 4.5. Which makes a huge difference when you've got a big elevation gain and rocky terrain.

The lake is spectacular, we fished and he dog played in the lake. There was snow on the other side of the lake still at the end of August.

But just be prepared for the extra distance.

Beautiful area!
