Loved this hike, bring lots of water.

breathtaking views. started early and saw no one on the way up. Did start seeing the late risers in the way down. Windy at the top the day we went, so be prepared for that.

Such a unique place. Challenging but fun hike, we went late morning. It was about 101 when we set out and before we hit the half way point we turned around because of the temps. Back at the car it was 107 and even though we had plenty of water, there were parts of the trail without any shade and we were starting to overheat. Aside from that we really enjoyed this spot and will make a return trip very soon and head out early for sunrise. The mountains and rock formations are amazing here and you’ll have plenty of photo ops in the canyons. Pack out what you pack in... dirt road is a bear coming down Painted Canyon Rd. Be ready for some major vibrations for about 5 miles of unpaved road. Best done in a truck, your pretty luxury car will cry coming here.

Did this trail in July, hot but not insufferable. Well maintained- going up is harder cardiovascularly while going down tougher on legs. Views are great at the top. Highly recommended

Was a great hike yesterday here. Definitely a hidden treasure to admire close to the Imperial Valley. Take plenty of water, gloves, hiking light shoes with good traction, sun block, snacks and a beer or two to enjoy up on the canyon. I guess i learned yesterday that the north trail is called The Ropes, and the east trail is ladder Canyon trail. I recommend to go east trail and follow rock arrow into hidden canyon. You can go the other way also, half way there is a hill that will be safer to go down than up for some. I'm going back for sure; Enjoy and stay safe!!

A short hike that can get tough due to the temperature. Beginning of June, it was already in excess of 110 degrees during the day, so an early start is definitely recommended here. On the plus side, the trail is to a large extent in the shadow if you hike in the morning, and the 360 view from the top is definitely worth the effort. Just make sure that you carry enough water and wear a hat!

This is a great hike, but as others have said, it isn't marked at all. We relied on information from other hikers and Alltrails to figure out where to go. The ladder and ropes are fun and the hike is mostly pretty. The upper loop to the top of the big canyon is completely exposed. We got an incredibly late start, so this part baked me, but the canyon was worth it. As a bonus, we saw a little gray fox. The road in was rough, but ok for a regular car.

Definitely coming back to this hike, lots of trails to explore.

I would recommend coming early to avoid high temperatures (it reached 112 when we went last week) and bring plenty of water.

Definitely strenuous. Especially in the summer. Lots of folks turned back because they knew they didn’t have enough water. The view is amazing from the top. Not for the faint of heart.

Did it up to the second oasis today, 109 degrees. I had a 2 liter camel back which was just enough water for the three miles each way.

Still beautiful when most everything is dry. Much better 2 weeks after a rain in the spring...but then you don't get it all to yourself!

Saw a lot of mountain bike tire tracks, they must meet the trail at the top and use it as a down hill exit.

Saw several coyote scat piles on the trail, one still wet. Would have liked to have seen it, but no other sign.

It’s pretty but verrrrry vacant. Bring water. And a buddy. And some sort of protection just in case you run into a hungry wild animal or crazy person.

My only dislike of this trail is how long it actually takes to get to the fun/pretty part. But that’s all the trails in The Cove. This one is definitely my favorite Cove trail. Great views. Great exercise.

6/27 95+ degrees. Started at 12pm. 3kids/3adults.
Super hot but cool in the shade and inside the canyon. Came to the crawl or climb area into the climb up a rope section. Climbed all and out into the open canyon. Too hot to explore further, not enough water, climbed back down and made it back into 110degree heat. Washroad is a long if u go slow, but patience is better than a broken car part. Bring lots of water and muscles. My 5, 9, 11yr old made it

This was a challenging hike! I agree with the Park Rangers that it's strenuous. The full sun and elevation climb make it a tough trail but it's a great workout. The lower valley trails are easier and prettier.

Hiked this yesterday 6/26 - started at 4 from the parking lot, 109*. If you're doing this any time after 10a, bring a LOT of water. You gotta earn this one... Lots of uneven terrain once you start heading up, the length/vertical isn't bad, but the terrain makes it harder than advertised. With breaks, 4 hours, 9.5 miles, 2400 vertical parking lot and back. A little disappointed that the trail doesn't actually summit - you end up going around the back side and then back down to the Oasis, which right now is dry. Other then that, definitely a decent hike if you're looking for a good test.

Best hike for the view. Its all uphill, so bring water and a hat, as the whole trail is exposed. Its rated as strenuous in the NP guide, but I think thats too keep the tourists at bay. I can see this being a hike people have to be rescued from....

Short hike, but uphill, but once at the top, you get a beautiful 360 degree view of Joshua tree NP and beyond. Some annoying tourists were at the top flying a drone, which was incredibly annoying so please respect the land and your fellow hikers. The constant buzzing and whipping of drones is incredibly distracting and annoying. Sorry I don't care about the dumb youtube video you are going to make or your instagram likes on a selfie of you. STOP IT. (enough ranting :} ).

Beautiful and scenic trail. I have hiked this trail and ridden out and back from the cove side on my mountain bike many times. Great views from the top, a reward for the hard work!

A nice hike with lots of views. ..and steps. A moderate hike climbing, but easy climb down , and took only about 2.5 hours round trip including many photos and scenic pauses.

Great hike! I’d rate it as moderate; only the last little push up the mountain had us breathing heavy. The rest is fairly gentle and scenic. Really well marked. Just keep an eye out for WP posts and you’ll be fine. Great views at the top.

Love this app

Love this hike. Gorgeous views. The parking is on a dirt road off the main road so if you don’t have 4 wheel drive just be aware (I have a corolla and drove very carefully).. Decent uphill work out. I have actually been inside the mine (there was a hole in the fence and couldn’t help myself). If you search carefully enough inside you will find a treasure. Graffiti from someone who was in a very famous band who passed away (I don’t want to say- you will have to look for yourself. It is on the ledge above the stairs). I felt reluctant to say anything because I don’t want anyone to be disrespectful to the mine or get hurt. But it is truly a treasure to see. !ALSO WANTED TO NOTE that while walking off the trail up to the mine, my friend walked close enough to a *RATTLESNAKE* to cause it to rattle. It was 5-6 feet long. So just be aware that they are up there. !

Beautiful hike! Can’t wait to bring my kids on this one!

Starts out nice and easy, then gets a little more technical with some loose rocks, the some steep large rocks. Better if your horse is in shape and has shoes. Felt like i needed a mountain goat at some points. Trails are marked and in places where it might be iffy they have dead joshua trees blocking the wrong way.

Loved this hike! I did it twice it was so much fun and full of little trails to explore. A must do when you visit the area!

Great hike. Beautiful vistas. I’d avoid it during peak heat hours, but still very doable with good supply of water. Probably insane during the golden Hour for photos.

Beautiful 360-degree views await you at the summit! It’s not too difficult of a hike if you have proper footwear, sufficient water and sun protection. Go early in the morning and bring some snacks to enjoy at the top.

A challenging but nice trail. It takes you high up the mountain.

Except for the very end, I never got bored! This was a great hike. Very few people and amazing views. There were definitely bees, but they don’t bother you if you do t bother them!

Scenic and dramatic!
