I really love this trail as it is very open to walking as well as biking and offers beautiful scenery along every mile you take.

Great paved bike trail with parking at the bridge in Water Works Park. When you get into Ashworth Park there is a web of dirt trails for mountain biking and hiking which I would love to explore sometime!

Great trail!! Easy riding on a paved fairly level path and beautiful scenery! The bridge is gorgeous and we liked all of the stops with historical information.

Just a really nice, easy ride. The half of the trail between Slater and Woodward is a better ride than Slater to Ankeny, and not just because of the bridge. It’s just more scenic and more beverage stops if you’re so inclined.

06/19/18 - I headed north from the Douglas Ave trail head and made it only about a quarter mile before the trail was impassable due to the high level of the river. It was fun while it lasted, though. I'll head back when it dries out some.

Love it did 6 miles

Bring your water and bug spray! Quick, scenic and enjoyable short hike.

I rode the section of trail from Maxwell to just past Cambridge (~7 miles one way) on a hybrid bike. The unpaved trail is about 90% hard surface, crushed limestone but at some road crossings it is paved for 50 or 100 yards on either side of the crossing. The other 10% is variable between slightly soft to “my legs are burning my legs are burning!” soft soft sand. One section was so bad that there is a trail starting to form in the side grass (which is supposed to be for equestrians) where many bikes couldn’t take the softness and instead switched to the grass side. The evidence is quite damning.

This trail is primarily “open”, so in mid-summer very few shady areas. Both sides of the trail are predominantly corn fields. There are some trees and a stream or two and some boggy areas, but they aren’t attractive or picturesque in any way at all. I could possibly ride it again someday, but only because it is close to where I live. To many soft spots in combination with bad scenery make this a low priority trail in my book (for biking). However, if I want somewhere close for a walk with my dog on something that isn't paved, I may revisit it.

Throughout my 14 mile ride (first warm day of spring, on a weekend) I encountered 1 jogger, a couple with their dog, and 1 equestrian.

It’s quiet minus the traffic nearby but loads of birds and a good distance with no real inclines/declines for need an even level path.

Great trail by Iowa’s standards! Compared to Colorado yah no

Flat with river and some trees.

gets very crowded during the weekends..

Camp was great. Weather was Great. Company was great. Hikes were decent. Location for training for a Big Expedition was Astronomical. There isn't a whole lot of "events" on these loops however there is a great mixture of ups and downs, in and outs, back and forths. I recommend this area to any beginning backpacker looking to train and condition for something bigger. Saw a few bottles and trash in the "Lost Lake" area .5 miles south before the road turns to gravel, make a left and follow the signs. It's a nice unwind. Not Spectacular but definitely not a place to pass up for a nice overnighter. The energy is great in this park.

great ride. great bars along trail. great food also. well maintained trail

Outstanding Hike

There are LOTS of stairs...be prepared! Great views and scenery throughout. This has been the best hike my wife and I have been on since we got back from Colorado. If hiking on the weekends, I would suggest heading out early to get decent parking and avoid the crowds. Lots of trail options...some unmarked. The maps provided at the trail heads are a bit confusing...and may not be to scale...its hard to tell with all the stairs.

I like that I can accumulate some decent mileage on this trail. It's not a super peaceful trail mostly due to traffic noise from the interstate. Flat and easy.

Great day for a hike

easy trail with a cool bridge to see at night

Easy walk. Peaceful. During the winter..you'll see several pick up hockey games on the ice

Overall nice trail to hike. Due to the lack of hiking spots in central Iowa Ledges can be very busy, especially on nice weekends, so plan accordingly if you want to avoid crowds. What is nice is that the area offers a number of trails so you can easily spend a day hiking here.

Gorgeous place!

Nice trail but can get very busy (especially on weekends) so if you’re looking for a little solitude consider when you are going. Hooks up with number of trails giving you a variety of options.
