Illinois - Top Dog Trails Map

From what I can see on the map here, it definitely doesn't follow the trail markers. Mainly after Goreville to the Mississippi. Im sure there is a more accurate map somewhere else to be found.

My first hike while visiting Illinois and I have to say it was a fantastic choice. I hiked in early October and so the temperature was a bit chilly but the right outerwear will combat this. Because of the day and time of the year, there were only two other hikers that I saw, which led to a lot more peace out there. The waterfall still had a good amount of runoff which made the whole trip worth it.

Hiked November 2018. Great trail if you like winding, woodsy, unpaved trails with rolling hills. Trails were marked but lots of intersecting trails so you can choose your own adventure which adds to the fun. Says trail is 10.1 miles but that’s if you are able to hike every path - many run side by side each other. We ended up with a 4-mile hike. I’d definitely do this trail again!

This was nice hike that I enjoyed. Good amount of hills which I liked. Went during the weekday and not that many people on the trail. Also the trail is well marked so you shouldn’t have a problem following it. Go out and enjoy this trail.

Great trail! We’ve hiked this trail numerous times. It’s beautiful and we’ve seen eagles and blue herons on the bluff. Lots of deer and occasionally, a coyote or two. It’s surprisingly hilly for Illinois. It’s especially beautiful in the fall. One note - wear bug spray in the spring and summer, the woods in this area do have ticks. Be sure your dogs are also protected. It’s especially bad in the spring which is also when people are hunting for Morel mushrooms and you will run into more people this time of year.

Really good trail! Make sure to walk it against clockwise! Decent into a canyon is a bit difficult and slippery but it is much worse as an accent. Make sure to have good hiking shoes or, like my 12 years old dachshund, bring a friend to cary you down!)) Views are great! Trail is extremely well marked. Outside of 3 places it is more of the easy/moderate easy but those 3 places are difficult.
To bad it is 4 hours away from my house but if I’ll be in the area I’ll make sure to repeat it!

Amazing run. Really enjoyed the woods area

Enjoyed the trail, well marked and easy for anyone to do all 8 miles or turnaround at a point that meets their level.

Beautiful trail!! It is hard to figure out how to get down to the waterfall. Go LEFT when you are on top of the waterfall. There are rocks that you climb down right after the wooden bridge. There is another spot of rocks to climb down right before the open field that will allow a longer hike. The waterfall was one of the best I’ve seen in Illinois thus far.

This is a really nice loop trail about 3.5 miles in all. The start either way is 'paved' with asphalt and then changes over to dirt/rocks. Very nice overlooks and well maintained.

Fall is a great time to come and see this awesome place! The different color trees make it more beautiful. Lots of places for photos. It is a easy trail I have been here 3 times and it always has a lot of people. If you bring children ... don’t let them out of your sight.

We started the trail clockwise. It is a easy hike on a stone paved walkway for a little bit then you will see the stairs to go down and squeeze thru the rock formations..then the trail is a dirt path which had a little mud because it had rained the day before. But not too bad at all! Loved to see the huge rock cliffs beside us as we hiked. It’s a easy peaceful hike only saw one other person so not too crowded!

Nice easy hike. Does take you to a awesome overlook. Has a small cave , big rock formations. You need to follow the blue blazes and sometimes it’s hard to know which way to go. Use your AllTrails recorder to help you stay on the right path. Saw a couple putting up their tent to camp which would be fun!

Beautiful trail. Easy hike , enjoyed the colors of fall

Trailer was enjoyable

Got a little off trail following the wrong markers but otherwise good

really nice trail, but easy to get lost. take a phone (a charged one!) for GPS so you can consult the map and you should be okay. wear bug spray - the trail can be overgrown at times.

Always a great view and fun climbing

mountain biking

definitely should be rated hard. most inexperienced mountain bikers will have issues. helmet and proper bike a must.

Highway noise is audible the whole time and the trail crossed several road with decent vehicle traffic. At one point it ran up against housing. Decent trail if you take the proximity of the city into account. The dog had a lot of fun though.

One of my favorite trails in the park.

loved the view of the lake if you take the straight bit off the loop and then double back. rock formations were awesome. go in fall when the trees are in color - it's breathtaking!

Beautiful fall day. Amazing golds and flame reds from the trees. Cool breeze in the sun making it perfect for hiking. A little road noise near the 55 but otherwise you could never guess where you you are. Easy walking. Great for our dog. Not too many times you can look down in Illinois unless your in a building but the glen gives you that privilege. Thankful for such a beautiful day.

We went after a rain and it was absolutely beautiful, it did make for slippery hiking conditions and it was a difficult hike through the falls. Definitely need good shoes.

I didn’t make it to the waterfall before nightfall, but a bit disappointed. Wasn’t as exclusive as I enjoy my trail hikes to be. Head the highway the whole time and there were telephone wires through the forest area and lots of roads to cross. Not bad for the length and the proximity to the city, and the areas are nice.

Horribly marked. Very disappointing.

Great trail, may be difficult for small children or the disabled
