beautiful canyon hike along the creek. not a lot of cover from the sun when we went, but it was fine in cooler weather. Saw a few other groups out there enjoying the trail, mostly mountain bikers, but it still felt like a nice remote escape.

Last 3/4th of a mile was steep, uphill the majority of the way there. Muddy in some places. But the lake was beautiful!

Nice little lake. Kids caught lots of small fish. They jumped off cliffs on end. Not many campsites. Most of surrounding lakes/ponds were shallow or dried out. Water had stopped running from top lake (but nice view of basin)

Beautiful trail with mini creeks to cross along the way. Watch for motor cycles on the trail as well (dirt bikes).

Backpacking

Hiked July 4th Took my children backpacking to Cabin creek trail. Their first backpacking experience. The trail is well maintained. No water crossings. Sometimes shady, sometimes not. It’s a steady incline. Mountain lakes are always majestic and beautiful but this hike wasn’t my favorite. It’s no comparison to Alice lake. My children were troopers especially since it is steep, particularly the last mile! The most important thing for me was that my children enjoyed it. I liked the experience but probably won’t go back.

The canyon is beautiful and well worth the trip. The road to get there is kind of insane though, my Ford Focus barely made it, and I had to be super creative with how I drove. There’s a nice little spot where you can walk down to the creek for your dogs to take a drink and cool down their paws too!

Bugs

Hiked this mid-July and camped 2 nights at Marten (spelled Martin at the trailhead) lake. The lake was beautiful and trail was great! Unfortunately the mosquitoes were nearly enough to carry off a small child, so we all ended up thoroughly chewed on even with bug spray. Catch and release fshing was good, but we never caught anything over 10 inches. Did a day hike to Kelly lake and the mosquitoes were not nearly as bad there

Trail was great! Last half mile is much steeper than the rest. You can easily walk up to the upper lake from the trail.

BackpackingBugsGreat!MuddySnow

Backpacked to Marten Lake which was really nice. Snow was still melting so lots of mosquitoes and a few muddy spots near the top. There are 2-3 fire pits near the trail intersection and another nice one another ~100m beyond. Also this trail (loop) has recently been opened to dirt bikes and mtn bikes so there is more traffic. Looked like a really enjoyable (if technical) mountain bike trail.

Hiked 5/30/2020. At mile 3.2 just past the wooden bridges the trail is completely snow covered. The lake was about 1/2 frozen.

Better than I expected. The canyon is beautiful and the trail system is well-maintained, although the road to get there is pretty rough in some spots. After a few miles in the canyon, the trail fades into the landscape.

Would have had a much better time if we would have known the actual distance to the first lake. Wondering why no one has commented on this? It was about 4.9 so 5 miles into the first lake! About 3.5 miles in when you hit the sawtooth wilderness signs. Last mile is definitely the climb. Well worth the views but definitely plan on a longer hike! Start early because it’s not fully shaded.
