11/17/18 - fun hike, definitely glad to follow the route here and save cascade for last as porter was great but much less climactic. Lots of wind at the top of both so either don’t spend more than a minute or be prepared. Brought along snowshoes because we were told by a worker at EMS that you can be fined for not carrying/wearing them but we just carried them the whole way and wore crampons and gaiters. Mountain got fresh snow the day and night before but by 9 am the trail was pretty packed down. Started later than we would have liked and ran into 2 or 3 10+ groups so if you want solitude definitely go early. Make sure to constantly take sips from your camelback to keep it from freezing! Especially when up on the summits. Started around 9:10, stopped multiple times for food/equipment/layer changes, flew down after both summits and got to the car around 3:00.

Ice last on north side out of sun
Still quite doable

Hiked on 11-11-18 Sam’s point , Ice Cave and Verkeederkill Fall Trail. Lots of water though after the rain. Recommended waterproof footwear.
Ice Cave is icy and cold. Make sure to dress warm. Verkeerderkill Falls view is Amazing, Beautiful trails.
The views are breathtaking. Awesome hike !

Did this one as part of the Catskill Firetower Challenge. The biggest challenge is perhaps just making it to the trailhead as it’s rather remotely located. The hike was a very quick jaunt to the top to see the observers cabin, luxury outhouse and of course the tower. The views were good from the tower.

The foliage right now is outstanding. Bright green pitch pines in a sea of bright red bushes. Suggested waterproof shoes for the footpath to the fall. At times the footpath turns into a stream as you approach the fall. Probably will get worse after rains. Nonetheless a magnificent hike for variety of pace and beauty of scenery. The approach on both direction is a carriage road so do not aspect anything more than a pretty country road. Enjoy!

hiked it on 11-4-18. was as awesome as the first time. lots of water though, definitely bring some waterproof shoes if hitting it after some rain. river crossing to the falls looked sketchy but wasn't at all once halfway in. would suggest hitting up with ice caves and Indian Rock, made the total mileage 11.4.

The trail is narrow and really rocky. We went after a big rain and the trail was completely covered in water essentially the entire way. We couldn't cross at the mouth of the water fall because the water had risen so much and the current was so strong that it felt dangerous to complete the trail to even get a really great look at it. We wound up hiking a bit in the opposite direction but the view was mediocre at best and covered by a lot of trees. A lot of other hikers hiked upstream to cross but it was incredibly muddy and just covered with so much overgrowth that it was hard to navigate. I've heard that it's not great to come during the summer because there's not much water, but coming after a big rain and not being able to cross after hiking almost 2 miles on a rocky/wet trail was really disappointing. I don't think I'd go out of my way to do this one again.

Fun hike always have mountain beavers (marmots) screaming at me

This was a beautiful trail. Some sections were steep and rocky, but overall it was very doable. Some of the ice at the top has turned to slush with the rain the last few days. Microspikes are needed about an hour into the trail. Use the app to tell where the summit of Porter is because it's not too well-marked on the trail. The 360-degree views from the top of Cascade are breathtaking.

I was so impressed by how well-maintained the trail is! The stairs and bridge made the trail feel very safe despite being on a pretty steep incline. Even though it was a short distance, the rocks to climb and bigger switchback near the topmost tier of the falls made me feel like I was still getting a great hike in.

I could see it getting very busy during the afternoon (and was told so by someone I bumped into on my way down), but getting there around 8 am allowed me to park in the first lot with easy access to the trailhead and have the trail nearly entirely to myself - including the upper observation deck, on which I got to look at the falls by myself for quite a while. It’s a gorgeous view and was a perfect fall hike.

Love this hike. Did it in the summer and hit a rain storm on the way down which wasn’t too great. Other than that super fun, forest, loose rock and boulders lead up to amazing views.

Pleasant hike with nice views from Giant Ledge. Hiking over to Panther is not really worth it though for the view itself, but walking around in the woods there is really soothing. The forest floor is covered in mats of bright green moss and it feels like walking in an enchanted forest.

Went during the week to avoid the big crowds and it was totally worth it. It was a pretty short hike up to Sam's Point and the views were amazing. Walking to the falls was pretty easy, flat, and a beautiful walk as well. These trails were easy to navigate and the paths were pretty clear. Take a day off and try to go during the week!

Easy trail in summer and early fall. Watch out for slick rocks during rain and especially ice patches in the winter. The amphitheater midway through the larger falls is just incredible. Several people die here each year, so be careful. It helps to take a single trekking pole for balance and insurance. I did and I’m glad I did. Have fun! This place is breathtaking in October.

Oct 27, 2018 - A marvelous hike!

We randomly woke up Friday (10/26) morn and decided to head up! It was really warm here in Arlington! Got to the trailhead at 9am and reached the peak at 11! As we slowly (so many terrible potholes)descended up the road it started to get very windy and the fog was so irie! The different landscapes were so beautiful and the trail very wet, we pretty much walked in water the whole time but no big deal! The saddest part was this was my first time and the fog never cleared and covered the whole view :( We were alone all morning and didn't see another group till we were half way down, then we passed 4 more groups all clumped up! Overall it was a perfectly irie October day, but I will be going back on a clear day to see the view I missed!

Did this trail this morning. I was reading the reviews for this trail and to all the people on here saying to bring your micro spikes, thank you. Lifesaver.
When we started it wasn’t snowing but I knew as the day goes on lake placid would be getting some snowfall. The 2 hours it took to reach the peak it was snowing pretty bad at the top it felt like glass shards hitting your face. Although we couldn’t see the amazing view this trail has to offer it was still breathtaking
Definitely want to come back to do this trail on a clear day.

Trail is well marked, pretty steep climb in spots. Great views of the Catskills.

The first half doesn’t seem like it will be worth it but if you do the entire trail it is breathtakingly beautiful. The peak, falls, and caves make for a very interesting and well worth it hike

it was breathtaking

Did this hike today, Sunday 10/21. The trail is in great shape and I could not experience and iced rocks as reported before. The NF-4200 definitely has quite a few and big potholes. I drove over carefully but you better plan 30-45min for the last few miles on the dirt road to the trailhead.

Temperatures were awesome. Did it all around in a t-shirt and it was mostly on the warmer side.

I recorded 4.75km one way from the trailhead to the fire lookout at the top.

Don't forget your Northwest Forest Pass;)

Awesome hike for the fall, since climb is all south-facing there was almost no snow until 3/4 of the way up. Conditions were dry and summer like with recent warm weather. Threw the gators on for the top portion but could have easily walked around deeper (mid shin) patches.

Amazing hike! Feeling my muscle pain now) I read and expected rocks on top, but didn’t know that it’s almost rock climbing. There wasn’t snow.

awesome hike to panther mtn. over ledge. views are spectacular. a bucket list hike for sure

Made this my first two adk high peaks today. Climbed with a head lamp around 5:30 this morning. Your crazy not to have microspikes and climbing.

Did this hike on 10/22/18. Started about 6:30am. The hike is relatively simple for high peaks. Low effort high reward at least for the views on cascade. 360 views on cascade were absolutely stunning. Hit porter on the way back down. Porter is a very unassuming summit as I stood on the summit but did not see a summit marker so i kept hiking. Thankfully I had service up there (Verizon) and pulled out the AllTrails app and realized I had hiked too far. 180 views on porter summit are stunning as well. Lots of ice on the trail so be prepared with micro spikes.
