Very beautiful and fun place to swim, but also very crowded with lots of families. Short and easy hike, I would not rate it as moderate.

Steep steps towards bottom. Down all the way in, up reverse. One of the nicest falls in NC. Well worth the hike

Excellent trail. We hiked after a rain and it was muddy in places, but the waterfall was well worth the wait.

Great trail. Lots of people though. Didn’t expect to be that crowded. Nice waterfall.

Fun hike! Went after a rain storm so the trail was super muddy but not very crowded. Under the rainy/muddy conditions, the trail was more of a moderate hike. Lots of rocks at the end just before the gorgeous falls!

It is pretty! We went on a Saturday so crowded and it rained, so really muddy! More on the moderate side than easy. Had toddler with us that couldn’t be carried up the last steep rocky portion to the falls. Had view though!

Quick hike to see a waterfall off of the Blue Ridge Parkway! We did this hike in a slight rainfall and it was perfect weather! Falls were the best at that time too.

Bring a trash bag and take some styrofoam out with you! After all the flooding the falls are surrounded by little bits of it. If we don’t take it out, it’ll stay there.

Nice stroll to the falls. Harder climb up right side of falls, especially after a day of rain.

This is a great hike and it’s a half mile to the top. It is steep and you ascend 480 ft in that half mile. The first half is paved and the second half is a dirt/rock stair trail. About half way up at the end of the paved trail is a viewing platform(if you don’t want to make the trek to the top).

Plenty of parking available.
The trail was very well marked, and despite having rained earlier in the day, it wasn’t overly muddy or slick.
The falls were gorgeous! Definitely worth the hike to see. I strongly recommend hiking the full loop...there are beautiful views all along the way:) took less than 2 hours altogether, including time stopped to enjoy the breathtaking waterfall.

Beautiful scenic hike. Waterfall at top is gorgeous. Many areas of the trail were very muddy.

Wonderful!!!! Lots of falls, lots of shade. Easy hike and lots of places to stop and enjoy the water. Go up the ropes— you won’t regret it! Just stick nearest to the water once you’re up past marker 3 so you don’t get lost!

Beautiful views on the way up to the blue trail loop.
We chose to go left and it was decently steep. My heart rate was up until we reached the top, where a natural spring was coming out of a rock.
I use trekking poles while hiking to protect my knees and was thankful to have them once we were half way up the blue trail.
We didn’t see any wildlife while we were out, but I imagine 2 people and 2 dogs make a lot of noise to scare animals out of our path.

Great trail. Easy for kids. Beautiful falls with lots of areas to get your feet wet or take a little dip. Very crowded. Will try to go during the week next time.

Great little trail! There are three or four areas that are moderately difficult to traverse but overall very relaxing. You cross three wet areas. To stay dry you have to cross some rock areas but overall very nice. Great reward at the end!

moderate trail. fun

The Falls were beautiful and worth every step of the hike. If you have children be very careful as the lower 2/3 of the trail has very jagged rocks and exposed roots. Will definitely hike this trail again when we are in the area.

I think this is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in western North Carolina. While the view from the base is really nice the view you get from the top is spectular.

Great hike with beautiful views of the waterfalls.

So fabulous that we come back every year!

Loved this hike. Was so worth the drive. Second half is a bit harder, but some really pretty viewpoints. Also some nice rock formations to see.

When you enter the Fish Hatchery park immediately to your left in the large parking lot. The trailhead begins there to the far left if you want to do Cat Gap Loop Trail clock-wise. The Trail is very narrow in the beginning but opens up somewhat. Lots of roots and rocks, streams and mud so this is definitely a Moderate Trail. Blaze signage is sorely lacking and I only saw it for the first few trees at the beginning then nothing! Eventually you will reach the right branch to John Rock Loop which is pretty darned steep and long but like everyone else says the view is worth it. The pics you take will not even come close to looking like the real thing. It’s a 10/10 awesomeness. It took us about 90 mins to get to the top and 60 back - we retraced our path as we didn’t have enough energy to complete the entire Cat Gap Loop this time around.

We were there all of 15 minutes. Within that time period we witnessed 2 complete dumbasses jump from the falls. One of which was covered in Swastika and white supremacy tattoos (he grazed the cliff on the way down). It was crowded with a pretty colorful array of people. We pretty much ran out of there. Skip this

Good trail.

Nice trail. The waterfalls are gorgeous but the trail to the upper isn’t well marked. Never saw a blaze and went off the path for a little bit. Fortunately there are a ton of people who you will run into at some point to redirect.

Upper falls is worth it despite wet trail and many offshoots.

Pretty easy going hike! There’s bathrooms and water fountains at the parking lot of the trail head.

beautiful waterfalls. great hike!

After hiking the Foothills Trail four times I have seen this one enough. Besides I like Upper Whitewater Falls better..
