I did this hike last summer in June and it was amazing. I hiked this again yesterday (09/23/18) and it’s just as gorgeous as I remembered. This time it was awesome to see the orange and yellow leaves everywhere. Fall in the PNW is my favorite. We found it is the best route to take lower Elliot there and back. It follows the river and has a lot more to see. It isn’t as flat as upper Elliot but it’s worth it.

Solid hike with an amazing view from the top. Highly recommend going all the way and climbing up the side to the tip top. The only downside is going back down really took a toll on my knees. nonetheless I shall return for round 2.

Really great and challenging trail. Fairly steady incline and the scramble up Haystack is a nice way to cap off the summit hike!

Big gain in a short distance. Well worth the work with beautiful vistas and quite a bit of fun scrambling at the top.

Hiked this on Saturday. It says it’s 9.8 but my Fitbit logged 13.11 miles. It was beautiful at the top. Wish we had more time to enjoy it hanging out at the mailbox. Will definitely do it again.

Such an great hike! The lake was absolutely beautiful & the lookout was amazing! I recommend hiking boots, we ran into a bit of mud in several areas.

Didn’t make it to the falls, yet enjoyed the 3 mile hike, great one to start after two years away. Beautiful colors super scenic. Dog friendly, easy access from Salmon le Sac campground.

Trail is in awesome condition! Rainy season is definitely upon us. Remember to bring rain gear and wear waterproof shoes, you have to navigate through some creeks and a small waterfall. We saw a couple families with small children turn around due to the creeks flowing through the trail. My pup absolutely LOVED it and jumping on over all the roots and big rocks along the way!

Very well maintained trail with beautiful waterfalls.

The trail is maintained and fairly well marked. The Falls are dry, but still a great hike, even in the rain.

Loveeeee This hike. Even In the fog and rain, it’s was beautiful.

One of my favorite, and not too difficult, trails. This hike is great for anyone of any athletic level. Very kid and pet friendly hike. Have hiked this twice but never saw anyone swim. Bring plenty of water!

This was a Great Hike, especially because the weather was good! Must hike all the way for the best rewards! Lots of elevation gain, but with spectacular views at every level. Even got views of Mount Saint Helens.

Hiked up heather lake on 09/16; was pouring rain for the first half, and it stopped by the time we got to the top. Lots of water & mini waterfalls flowing along the trail, so waterproof boots and clothing highly recommended! Brought a small picnic to eat at the top with the beautiful view of the lake. Overall an awesome hike and will definitely come again on a day with better weather.

*Side note: the drive up the mountain to the trailhead parking lot has A LOT of potholes! I made it fine with the VW Jetta, but just something to watch out for.

Beautiful and great hike on a sunny clear 60 degree day September day. Three of us made the hike and took 4 hours total at a slower pace. Great views and moderately difficult. I wore trail runners and maybe a more stout hiking boot would be better as there is some rocks to navigate through at the top of the trail. I loved it. Considering it was after labor day there were still about thirty cars in the lot when we arrived at 1100 and about the same when we left at 3:00. Great hike (we had our leashed dog-he loved it)

Amazing! A must go hike.

Beautiful hike. Absolutely gorgeous!

This trail was absolutely beautiful!!! A perfect moderate rating. It is very rocky (big rocks, small rocks, lots of looking down where you're walking) so hiking boots with ankle support would definitely make your life easier. Once you get to the top, climb up the big boulder to the left where there is an incredible view of the lake and basin. The climb down to the lake is quick and easy and offers a few more beautiful views on the way down. I'm sure it gets really busy during good weather and weekends, so would recommend an early start!

I loved this trail and the beautiful lake! It is very rocky so make sure you wear hiking boots with ankle support because it would be very easy to twist an ankle. I saw a lot of dogs on the trail, and the bigger dogs seemed to love it but saw some smaller dogs that were really struggling. It also might be a good idea to bring booties for your pups If they have sensitive paws due to the rocks.

Great hike, especially on a clear day. Not too difficult, last stretch is the hardest. Took just over 2 hours to get up.
The road up was full of potholes! The trailhead is about 5 miles past Heather Lake.

Such a beautiful hike. The road was bumpy but definitely not as bad as we anticipated. Need good hiking shoes (not regular sneakers) as there are lots of rocky parts, tons of tree roots and some muddy parts as well. Started the trail at 8AM on a Monday and had the trail and the fire lookout completely to ourselves! Didn’t see anyone until we were on our way down. The view was stunning! Definitely recommend this hike!!

Nice hiking trail. Rocky at the beginning, but then opens up to the woods and it's really nice to get away from the city. The views from the top are great and on a sunny day expect to see a lot of paragliders.

Busy path that was paved and pretty structured, but leads to gorgeous falls.

Came here on 09/08 a little later in the afternoon. The sun was out as we started our drive up but was getting cloudy as we approached the top. As a result we didn’t get to see the Mountain View’s as the visibility was very low. Also the Hurricane Hill trail was closed which was a surprise and a bummer since when we paid to get in at the beginning of this road they mentioned Hoh Rainforest being closed but not this (Why bring up a closure on the other side of the park but not the one we are headed to??). There was a short .5 loop hike we did on a ridge that begins at the start of the right side of the parking lot called High Ridge Trail. It was nice but started to get slippery and windy and cold by the time we finished. We should have tried to go the next morning as it seemed a bit clearer from Port Angeles but that’s a long drive both ways and it didn’t seem worth it with no guarantee of sunshine/visibility. Moral of the story make sure you check on trail closures and don’t attempt this if the weather isn’t great. Will be much better off in a lower elevation hike where visibility isn’t an issue like in the clouds. Maybe again some day we will get to see it all.

Loved the informational plaques. The Falls were gorgeous! The trail was heavily trafficked and there were many signs of rule breakers along the sides of the lower river bed.

Nice, short trail with great waterfalls at the end!! Be sure to go to both the upper and lower twin falls. The lower one is the taller one that’s straight down, the upper falls turn a few times. Once you get to the bridge to see the upper falls, keep going up a bit to see the top part of them. Very beautiful.

Teaser views of the summit along the way, as well as various smaller waterfalls, before reaching Comet Falls. Continue past the falls to Mildred Point for a great view of Rainier, glaciers/glacial streams, and the upper valleys. Well worth the visit! Best visited in late summer/early fall when the snow has melted in the upper valleys.

Pretty hike, trail is difficult due to rocks and roots and it’s literally a stream. Make sure to wear waterproof shoes since you’ll need to walk in water. The lake is beautiful and the sun was just coming up behind the mountain around 12.

Absolutely worth the hike to get the awesome view up at the fire tower! Definitely feels longer than you might think at times. Bring some food to replenish & plenty of water. Had no issues with parking or bugs when I went over labor day weekend 2018 - arrived around 9:30am. We spent our time after the hike over at Mowich lake for the rest of the afternoon. Great way to relax and enjoy your accomplishment.
