Beautiful ridge hike! Would recommend going clockwise so you don't have to scramble down.

A group of 7 of us just did this hike on Tuesday September 11th 2018 and it’s now my favourite! Even my 9 1/2 year old dog, Jada did it with us. Incredible views the entire time. Highly recommended! We completed the hike clockwise as suggested. You want to do this hike on a clear day to admire the amazing views. With 7 of us and a dog, lots of picture breaks and snack breaks it took us 6 hours. But we were slow! We saw three grizzlies!! They were grazing on the mountain side so they were far away from the group! Amazing to watch them through the binoculars.

Incredible! We were lucky enough to have an inversion today. Could not have asked for a better way to experience this hike. Wouldn’t want to attempt this in snow or wet, but if the weather is dry enough, this is a superb day out. We took 5 hours with lots of breaks just chilling along the Ridge soaking it in. Would recommend starting from the South and going clockwise. Add it to your must do list. Well worth the drive from Calgary.

Pretty steep hike and you have to really make sure where you're going because the trail is poorly marked. But once you get to the top, the view of the water on one side and the valley on the other side are incredible. Highly recommend. TAKE YOUR TIME. Breathtaking hike for breathtaking views.

Trail is in great condition, but we saw a grizzly today 5 minutes from the lake and had to turn around. Be cautious if heading that way. We reported it, but there is no change to the trail report.

A terrific hike starting through a pretty much straight pleasant hike through forest. At around 2.8 km you will be at the bottom of a majestic range surrounding you. Breathtaking views in every direction. Small rocks and earth dot the rest of the way up. We made it to 6800 feet when heavy rains forced us to turn back.

Awesome hike, would say it's moderately hard but not super difficult if you go at your own pace! Definitely start clockwise as everyone suggests. This hike took us 4 hours and 20 minutes with a snack break and LOTS of picture breaks to capture the non-stop amazing views. It gets quite windy up top because you're on top of a mountain and there is nothing to stop the wind, so wear layers - I'd even recommend gloves and maybe even a toque! I'm not a very accomplished hiker, and I didn't find this hike to be intimidating at all. Don't let some of the other reviews and mention of scrambling scare you! Would definitely recommend this to anyone look for a challenging but rewarding hike!

This hike is so beautiful. The comments on here helped a lot. I would recommend parking closer to the trail head and not at the Driftwood parking lot (it adds about a good chunk of time to the hike).

Beautiful hike all the way through. Breeze through a beautiful mossy forest to start this awesome hike, but don’t let this easy section of the hike fool you, once you break through the alpine you have a hard steep road ahead, but the reward is far worth it. Beautiful scenery of the Spray Lakes is viewable from the peak summit. Carry on for another 30 minutes along a loose rock ridge and you’ll find yourself at the glacier doorstep. I would recommend a good pair of hiking boots and poles as the loose rock becomes unstable at times.

Amazing hike! But you really do need to keep staying to the right, we ended up on a cliff and had to turn around haha till we found the right trail! Amazing once you get to the top!

The trail is not well marked we got lost and ended climbing up and going down several times trying to find the right trail, lots of steep incline and loose gravel.

Great hike that isn't the most difficult but you get superb views. When we hiked it was very smokey but still the views were amazing. You can do the hike in either direction and i think either way is just as challenging. Will do this great hike again when the air is crisp and there is no smoke.

Pretty walk through the forest for the first bit of the trail next to a stream. Totally lost the trail once we got to the scree though. Went up the wrong way and had a heck of a time getting back down lol. Keep hard left once you exit the trees and look for the small rock piles to re find the trail.

So, I read all the reviews about this hike and everyone was pretty spot on.
I would like to note that instead of parking at the driftwood day use to go up the road just a little further. The actual trail head for the west wind pass is closer to this entrance, otherwise you hike about an extra 30-40 minutes. We ended up turning back and then driving farther up thinking we were on the wrong trail all together.
The main trail sign you see is called high rockies trail. You will find a branch off for the west wind pass.
The trail is steep. I'm a beginner and it's doable but it took a bit longer than an hour and yes, there's a section closer to the top that's hard to see the trail and we went the wrong way and had to come back down, so just take your time and keep right, look ahead if you can't see the trail clearly, it will help you see the best route to go.
Have good hiking shoes. This is not a nature walk, the terrain is loose. You may want a walking stick too, just so a little extra support.
For cooler days I'd recommend some gloves for up top and a windbreaker as well.
It's getting 4 star because the trail was a bit hard to locate. I've posted some photo's to help others on their venture.
Definitely would go again.

Loved this hike. The scramble is fun & doesn’t take long. Once you’re on the ridge the views are amazing!

Start of trail (2-3km) is basically a wide dirt road/trail. Would be good for biking. Once you break away from that, where the trail splits to go to Karst Springs, you are on a beautiful trail. The scenery is fantastic. This is a very enjoyable easy hike.

been year but great easy hike for sure well worth it

glad I read comments first - now I understand how easy it is to take a random trail! we stayed right at every junction and got to the pass in an hour, 2 humans with our 2 dogs... great hike when have limited time..

Easy trail. Took us 2 hours but we stopped at the end for half an hour and had some long photo stops plus watched the rock climbers. We took our shoes off and walked through the icy water to view the waterfall but it was so cold our feet hurt and it was not worth it. Better to climb up and look down at the waterfall.

Was a very nice little hike. Highly rewarded for the small amount of effort required to get to the ridge. The trail splits about 20 feet from the trailhead. Stay to the left (small, hand written, ad hoc signs told us which way to go). Other than that, trail is super easy to follow and views were beautiful.

We got super lost, several times and ended up climbing up an area that wasn’t the actual trail. We didn’t get to the pass because we gave up, but found the trail on our way down. The views are amazing, but the trail is not well marked at all. We’ll probably be back to do the trail again so we can go up to the actual pass!

great views for not a lot of work, definitely difficult going up, lots of steep incline. we also got lost off the trail a few times because it forks a lot but you always end up coming back. to start fork left and you will see a little metal sign with West wind pass written on it in marker. the pass was very cold and windy today. we couldn't spend much time up there because of our baby. will have to try again on a warmer day. amazing views all through the hike

We had issues finding the trail head. Park at “Driftwood” and cross the road. Follow that trail for about 30 minutes (this is pretty easy terrain) and you’ll come across the actual trailhead for West Wind Pass. It should be on your left. The first part of the trail is well marked, but near the end it gets tough to find the trail. I’m not an overly experienced hiker and found some of the sections near the top to be a bit tricky. Just make sure to stay RIGHT!

It is a beautiful hike, but we found the trail past west winds very difficult to navigate and ended up getting lost at the scree and had to turn back around eventually. There were no other people on the trail past west winds despite it being a beautiful day. I would definitely try this one again and hopefully would have better luck with the route.

Definitely a more challenging hike. Lots of up hill and there sections with loose gravel. Make sure to be prepared, as there is no cell phone reception.

So fun! I’m not a terribly experienced hiker, so the little scramble at the beginning was exciting. I was definitely a little scared, but in a good way! The views were awesome and walking the ridge was a treat.

Great trail! Took our two kids with us (4yr and 8 months). Its easy to moderate hike. Slow and gradual.
Bonus- we went during long weekend and saw only handfull of other hikers , it was like a private hike and with kiddos its more than we can ask for.

Hiked this trail today and wasn’t too smoky. Great scenic views once you are on the ridge. It took nine of us to complete the 10 km hike in just under 5 hours. A little bit of scaling and worth it! Stay hydrated!

Absolutely phenomenal views of Mount Smuts, Mount Birdwood and Mount Fist. One of the most spectacular views I've ever seen in a day hike. Highly recommend. A little bit of exposure at the first climb to the left ridge but definitely pretty mild. Can't wait to do it on a non-smokey day!

Definitely one of the coolest hikes I’ve ever done! It was reaaaaally smokey but we got some good shots still! When you find the parking lot, definitely start with the trailhead on the LEFT. I would not want to do the loop starting on the right. Cant wait to do it again when there’s isn’t so much smoke and we can see all the mountains!
