We had a great day on this walk! We’re in our 50’s and in ok fitness and found this trail to be a real gem!

One of the best tracks I’ve walked. Very scenic with the river, the rocky cliff faces all with the magnificent Mount Hutt in the background. Can’t wait to go back and walk it again.

Excellent easy tramp. It has wonderful views of the river and the gorge, Weather was nice but breezy. the north wind cuts through like the legend describes. Towards the end of the trail the path was mushy wet so take care to not slip.

Fucking shit

Hard work to start, but the views are amazing! It's not 16 km. Doc says 2 hours up.

This map needs to be updated. This is no longer a loop and it is unsafe to get right up to the cave. Looking towards the cave the right hand part of the “loop” is closed due to earthquake damage. Left hand half is fine. However it is best to turn left towards Summit Road rather than attempt to get to the cave.

Beautiful walk with great views of the Mt Taylor range. A little muddy and slippery in sections.

this is not a kid friendly track at the moment, it has obviously had no repairs since the earthquake and the right side of the loop is closed...not that we saw that till we got to the end having nearing broken my ankle several times. I would highly recommend not doing this track after any rain.

Amazing views, a bit muddy in winter even on a sunny day... however TOTALLY worth it!

Great track, watch out for the sheep

Great views over the Waimak valley.

Wouldn’t do it after a rainfall, it’s quite dangerous as it is!
It is closed but you can access it.

6-7 hours hiking and climbing. Make sure you have enough water and proper outfit.

Great hike. Beautiful scenery. Weather was a bit windy and rainy/snowy so the Keas weren’t out. It’s can get really cold up there especially after you leave the tree line. Be prepared to spend at least 6 hours. The way down is just as hard if you want to keep your footing.

We climbed Avalanche Peak as a loop, going up Avalanche trail which starts just behind the visitor centre in Arthur’s Pass and down Scott’s track (the hike described here). Avalanche Trail is steeper than Scott’s and it is recommended to come up Avalanche and go down Scott’s.
This hike is pretty much as hard as it gets with most of the way up and down being more of a scramble than a hike over boulders, lose rocks and slick roots. But the views are very much worth it! Incredible 360 degree vistas once you get above the tree line. There are also quite a few of the insatiably curious Kea around - just take your time and watch them. They often even come right up to you to investigate your shoes, backpack or poles! Just please do not feed them :). Plan on taking the whole day - 7 to 8 hours if you want to have time for breaks and Kea observations.

6-7 hours round trip. Very tough hike, but the incredible views are worth it. You’ll also see tons of Kea parrots at the top!

Recommend starting counterclockwise as the footing is better for the down hill portion. Hiking poles a good idea also.

Yes this is the filming location for Edoras in Lord of the Rings. It is as beautiful as you might expect if not more, and the completely untouched landscape will leave you breathless. You generally will not see too many people up here. Watch out for cow patties, but otherwise it's an easy hike.

Amazingly beautiful river. Take a boat ride if you can.

Absolutely stunning views. Got a little lost on the summit due to the lack of signs.

Breathtaking vista and magnificent environment. Short walk not exposed, track easy to follow. Also good for families, no wheelchairs. Private land so respect it! Seems also to be a perfect snowshoes walk during winter perhaps parking the car before the slope and taking an easy 7h walk.
