very calm and reliable hike great views and peaceful

A really mild, relaxing hike! There is plenty of nature and rolling hills to see. Not much incline, and there is a pond at the base of the hike!

Make sure you go early and wear shoes with good traction! It looks harder than it is.

Today about 8:30-8:45 am, my 14-year-old son and I were in Oak Canyon South (just a bit beyond the first bridge after the Grasslands junction) when we encountered a pack (5-6) of large coyotes. Two crossed immediately (about 5 feet) in front of my son, going into the brush on our left side, while the rest of them were above us on the right side. One of these stood looking down at us. I was surprised that they didn't seem afraid of us, so to be on the safe side we backtracked out of the trail. It was a cool experience, but unnerving at the time. I enjoy this trail and we will be back.

Uneventful hike.

Great place to find some little gems such as the tree with the insanely big roots! Recommend sneakers for the actual hiking trails.

Ok for a walk

A lot quieter this way :) and you don’t really lose any distance from the “freeway” up the front

Did this hike with my son this weekend and we really liked it. The views at the summit were beautiful and we caught some of the air show at Miramar.. that was a plus! Would recommend this trail and would definitely do it again

Espectacular vista y ambiente por la orilla del lago.
Súper sencillo el recorrido, apto para niños, principiantes, etc. Son 9km totales (ida y vuelta).
Caminata, trote, mascotas, bicicletas.
Área para descansar y convivir, tienda y amplio estacionamiento.

Classic San Diego canyon landscape with river rocks on a partly shaded trail. The far eastern part of the trail includes a steep sandstone portion with deep grooves. Not quite a sandstone slot canyon (at least not yet), but beautiful, unspoiled, and definitely unexpected. Minus one star for constant road noise from the 52 and for general proximity to the freeway. Climbing down the sandstone part of the trail, I felt almost awkwardly watched by drivers getting on the 805 south from the 52. But it is what it is; the freeways aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, and I hope the park isn’t either. Perfect for getting your nature fix without leaving the city.

Very beautiful! Isn’t the most nature-esque trail, but it’s as good as it gets for Southern California. It does have really incredible views of downtown, the Coronado bridge and sailboats. Definitely a must-do!

Perfect for appreciating the dramatic part of the San Diego coastline. It was a good length for kids to walk too, but we held them by their hands or carried them, as portions of the trail are dangerous. Exercise caution and use common sense!

For mountain biking is A hard way to go up But great for down hill It’s very technical lots of rocks

To get to the top and recommend going around the mountain from the Lakeside towards the antennas

Overall great trail

Although seeing tide pools was cool, I don't see this as a "hike" per say. It's not a place to go to take a long walk. Its so short that it shouldn't even be categorized as a trail.
The value of seeing the tide pools is well worth it though as it's rare to see these particular formations along the So Cal coast.
I'd say come here for the tide pools, not for a hike. Go to the top of the hill for the Bayside Trail for a nice 2 mile walk along the coast.

I decided to go to Cabrillo Monument and spend the afternoon there. I was interested in walking the Bayside Trail. It was a very pretty walk seeing Downtown San Diego and Tijuana in the background. The walk down was easy but walking up was a little tougher that made me break out a little sweat. It was nice going down 1 mile and back up 1 mile. Personally I enjoyed it because of the nice views and light ocean breeze. I will definitely do it again.

The lake was beautiful but it kinda sucked that you couldn’t go all the way around the lake, so you could get back to where you parked. You gotta go all the way back from where you came which was a “nice” little walk all the way back. Make sure you get back to your car by 8:00pm otherwise they might close the gates and lock your car in: all in all the scenery was awesome!!!!!

Loved it, took my 8 year old brother with me. Definitely less crowded.

I was pretty disappointed in the tide pools. I expected much more after having been to Dana Point. I went on a Saturday and there were quite a few people which made it challenging to maneuver around not to mention the sandstone rock was very slippery in areas. Beautiful, unobstructed view of the ocean and the sandstone cliffs are gorgeous. The Bayside trail is simple enough, just watch your footing. Depressions and sand on the wood stairs can cause you to trip and/or slip. Can’t say that I would make the two hour drive to visit again.

Entrance fee of $15 per car and they do have restrictions on dogs. Went here looking for tide pools as reading a few reviews was told this was the place to go but we only found 2 pools with any life besides all the flies around the kelp that had been beached. Dana Point had a lot more sea life to see. If exploring the tide pools and cliff edges be cautious as the rocks are very slippery. We almost slipped and fell and we watched 2 others who did. Nice little walk pretty busy area. We also went up to the visitor center as they have a little museum and souvenir shop. Great views of the bay. We did not go up to the light house. If looking for sea life best to go back down the road just a few miles to Sea World. I do have to say the sand stone cliffs are beautiful but be careful especially if you have little ones as there are no guard rails.

we really enjoyed the tide pools, cactus and knowledgable rangers

Amazing Views along the coast

I used the directions from the app and found a sign in the parking lot with a map. I wanted to do trail #12 and tried to follow the directions to the trail. I walked around the park for an hour before finding what might have been the trail but it was so secluded I didn’t feel safe going on it alone so I turned around and went to my usual walk in Encinitas. The park itself is nice with very nice tennis courts and several areas to relax and have a picnic. I just really wish there were better signs to show you where you are and where you’re headed.

This is my favorite way to access the Cowles summit. Not nearly so busy as the main route up, and easy access from my neighborhood. It’s a nice run and a good workout.
