Aloha! I typically hike up 1-3 times a week and have been doing so for almost 3 years now. Went up 7 of the last 13 days. Had an awesome time out hiking today! I will be going again on Wednesday morning and this weekend Saturday and Sunday. Possibly other weekdays this week too. I have hiked most of the hikes on this island many many times! It is often windy and/or rainy but we never have issues as we always have the right gear (microspikes and gloves) which is supplied by me when we go. If you're looking to hike and want to link up or get some ideas of what this trail looks like feel free to reach out to me on my Instagram @mike.karas or mikekarasphotography@gmail.com. Bring plenty of water for this hike and other hikes out here in Hawaii

I will be going again tomorrow on Wednesday and this weekend Saturday and Sunday. Possibly Thursday and Friday too. I have probably done this particular hike more than anyone else on island. Very beautiful hike with the enormous variety of plants and trees that flourish in this nice climate. Make sure to use some mosquito repellent before you go and wear shoes with a good grip. January 4th 2019 it was very busy, muddy, and slippery.
It inspired us to go on hikes around where we live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada CA.

Doing this trail in my opinion is better than the stairs. It’s more of an adventure, the views are amazing and it’s a bit longer. Took me a solid 3 hours. I went up the stairs and went the back way down. I’m honestly surprised the legal way isn’t illegal. It’s definitely a hard hike. Bring plenty of snacks and water.

I did this hike today on January 22nd 2018. When I went, there was no guard or police officer posted. However, other hikers I saw along the way said there was one when they went by. Anyways this hike took me about 2 hours up and the views were amazing. They’re were rescue helicopters flying around up there and will come very close to the stairs. Make sure to go on a non cloudy day. Otherwise your views will be blocked at the top.

I've been going every weekend. this past Saturday it was very cloudy and muddy. If you want to avoid getting fined/arrested I will be going up this Saturday the 26th the legal backway. In my opinion going up the stairs all the way gets boring, the backway is more of an adventure and there are better views. It can get pretty muddy and windy. Crampons(spikes) recommended, I do have some spare spikes.
If interested send me a message on instagram @angelo_q or email me at chicolo@hotmail.com for details. Make sure to bring plenty of water and food

Rocks can be slippery but footing is solid overall. Good workout; nice morning hike.

This is not open to the public. There are signs posted that warn against unauthorized personnel accessing this property. Enter at your own risk (that being a substantial fine $$$). That being said, there is one part of this trail (on the far side of the loop) that is not clearly marked and is not visible. I hiked out “hugging the ocean” only to have to turn around and hike back to the paved road, making this hike twice as long as originally planned. Take plenty of water with you and apply sunscreen to your entire body. Wear a hat that covers as much skin as possible — at the least a baseball hat, but ideally one that will also cover your neck. Steep parts of the backside of the loop are smooth, wide, rocky pathways that were once old lava flows. These are very slippery when dry with a lot of loose gravel, and also dangerous when wet.

Does anyone know if this hike is worth paying local guides for? Or are the trail markers visible and quite straight forward along the legal route? Guide cost is about $160-$180/person which is pricey.

I highly recommend going through and returning the way listed on this map. We parked just down the street at around 4am and easily climbed through the hole in the fence to the right of the main gate.

We made the mistake of returning through the other gate, where we encountered the guard, had to crawl under the gate which was within feet of an angry pit bull, and were bombarded by angry neighbor verbal assaults, video recordings, and threatening up close encounters with the neighborhood dogs. Use the main road it’s way easier.

This is a workout, you will sweat your ass off in the beginning, then freeze up near the top. Bring an extra warm shirt or jacket in case you get too soaked like I did.

Not too far but you will definitely feel the elevation. Very rocky and muddy and be mindful of other hikers.

We expected mud, but man, it was MUDDY! The reward at the end was well worth it. My 12 year old jumped off of the larger cliff while my 6 year old jumped off of the waterfall. Bring at least a change of shoes and water to wash off with at the car. Took five of us about 1.5 hours going out, 1 hour at the falls, 1.5 coming back, with frequent stops.

Anyone interested in going before Feb 14? I was 1 mile from stairs last time and need to get to the stairs before I leave tbeviskand

The falls are beautiful, but we were more drawn to the views along the trail leading up to it, and another trail going through the bamboo woods up to the left of the falls. The views were gorgeous, some looked like they were straight out of Jurassic Park. However, because of the easy accessibility of this trail, it gets crowded.

On the day we went hiking here, we later found out there had been a big land slide by the upper waterfall and that some hikers were missing. Hence, be careful with climbing higher and going off the trails, especially after rain. Take the warning signs seriously!

Like all the other reviews said, be prepared to get muddy. It was very slippery in some areas, so be careful. It took us just under 3 hours out and back at a leisurely pace. It is a well traveled trail so expect to pass people in both directions. Cross the stream at least four times. Beautiful hike. Well worth the mud.

Hello.. planning on starting stairway early morning Tuesday January 22. Looking for people to go with. Message me on IG @andres_diazign if interested.

This was one of those trails where you think you’re gonna be done 800 times but it’s never ending. It’s super slippery. Lot of rope climbing. My watch recorded that it was over 5.2 miles. This hike took a total of 8.5 hours (there and back). So bring a lot of water and leave early. P.S there are wild boars within the first 2.5 miles of the trail. Be careful. Stairs are amazing but honestly if I ever go again it’ll be illegally cause that hike is not worth it!

I'm just coming down from the trail January 19 2019... the hike up there was amazing, it had awesome views but unfortunately it was very cloudy at the top. if you plan to do this hike obviously like any other be careful, there are some sketchy spots but hold on tight and look at every step you take. The stairs are a beating but worth it!!

Wear appropriate shoes if you're not experienced or tend to be a little clumsy like me. Steep but well worth it. Lots of people but it's a short beautiful tropical hike worth visiting.

Heya! I'm looking to do this hike on Feb 19th or 20th. If anyone is interested in joining or already planning the trek, let me know! Canadian on vacation looking to get some pre-frisbee tourney adventure in! Reach me at aaron_zucker@hotmail.com or @aaron.zuck

Can get a little muddy but definitely worth the hike. Easy to do and a definite must if you are visiting Hawaii.

I went up on Saturday. it's been pretty clear up top. I have done this hike many times. If you want to avoid getting fined/arrested I will be going up this weekend the legal backway. I have some clean up to do up there. In my opinion going up the stairs all the way gets boring, the backway is more of an adventure and there are better views. It can get pretty muddy and windy. Crampons(spikes) recommended, I do have some spare spikes.

This was such a fun hike, but a little longer than we were expecting! All four of us were baby-wearing our littles. We loved the falls at the end and jumped in the falls at the end. Crawl up the waterfall and see the waterfall at the top!

Aloha, planning to hike this trail after Eminem concert next month. Shooting for February 16 or 17. Looking for experience hiking buddies to do it with us. Beer and dinner on me after! DM me on my IG @ mytravellovebug

From Manoa Falls, I went up Aihualama. At the end of Aihualama where it meets Pauoa Flats, I took the right and headed towards a lookout point with a bench. Once past Manoa Falls, I hardly came across anyone.

Hi ! I would like to do this hike tomorrow, I’m in Hawaii with my friends but they don’t really want to go because of the difficulty of this hike. So if you want to do it with a French hiker contact me on Instagram : theo_mrc

Nice hike. Muddy. Great swimming under the waterfall.

Nice waterfall, but many people.
