Good trail and easy to follow. Bring plenty of water and use sunscreen during the summer. Had my 4 kids with me (10 and under) and they were able to get to the top. It was definitely hot with minimal coverage, I’d like to do it again once it’s cooled down a bit. The views were worth the climb. The distance is a little off, it says it is 4.6 miles but we went 5.41 miles total.

fairly easy and marked well

Great trail !

You hike up Cowls Mountains and off to the side at the top you proceed to Pyles. Take plenty of water. Get there early because parking can be limited and turn wheels to curb. It took 2 hours and 23 minutes to do both hikes.

Highly traveled; often tracked-out unless it is beginning of season. Great for taking kids or beginners.

I did the downtown route as a beginner biker and felt quite challenged. My husband did uptown and downtown a few times and enjoyed both.

Typical SoCal hike. Good workout and accurate distance. There are a few nice lookout points but for the most part it is an uncovered grind to the peak. We went in the early afternoon on a sunny day in June and it was HOT. No tree coverage but based on other reviews did not expect any. A solid hike and close to San Diego which is a plus.

Went blind on this trail looking for a challenging ride out of William Heise campgrounds. Very tough climb lots of melon sized rocks, couple of fallen trees along the way.
This trail is probably hardly ridden or hiked. No foot prints, no sign of any activity on the trail what so ever!
Had a blast, very tough, remote, beautiful, for biking this definitely black diamond.
Bring lot's of water!

Took my son on this trail for his first off pavement bike ride. He enjoyed it. Lots of flow and rhythm on downtown while uptown gets a little more tech. For beginners downtown will not disappoint. Some exposed roots and rocks, uptown would boost your skills. Connects to Paper Route and Shotgun about halfway down. Bring water. Be observant and let the advanced riders by please. Had a few people not yield to me and my son got a little frustrating.

Great workout and a challenging hike. Will do this one again.

What can I say, this is a fun hike! The caves are so cool to see and u don't even think about the difficulty of the trail because of all there is to see! Beautiful views from the peak as well!

I really enjoyed this hike mostly for all of its historical content. The flume is so cool! Trail is accurately labeled moderate and just enough challenge to keep me interested

Fun but harder hike, took kids and dogs and they were good!

Loved this trail! One of 5 of the 5 peak challenge and my favorite. Views are great, not as crowded, challenging, great workout!

It was pretty dope. Stay Hydrated. Be respectful, clean up after yourself. Use sun block, take a hat. If you know how to drive you won't need a 4x4 to get to the hiking area, but it's recommended.

Great trail for a quick hike and a great view of San Diego. Bring water, it’s hot.

My favorite of the 5 Peaks!

it's quite the lower body burn for the first mile or so and then again, intermittently on the path. there are a few splits in the road that are not marked but you can figure it out relatively easily as the alternate "paths" don't really lead anywhere. you pass some huge homes, compounds really, so you don't really feel like it's a hike until you are near the top and the homes are in the distance. not as "scenic" as I'd hoped from prior reviews but after doing Corte Madeira in Cleveland National Forrest, there's not much that I would be wowed by. there are a lot of loose rocks so stick to the surfaces that look most traveled as they are the most secure. took us 2 hours because the first 20-30 minutes is super challenging. use this as a workout and you will love it. using it as a scenic experience, not really. we saw a total of 5 people so it's perfect for going at whatever pace you want.

Don’t go to this one if you get seen by BP you get kicked out fuckers!

Beautiful views along with my pup and I getting quite a workout with the steep hills. Parking was good and there was barely anyone there. With that being said, we encountered a rattlesnake towards the end of our hike (we’re fine!) just make sure you’re aware of your surroundings!

You can get solitude here even though it's next to one of the most popular hikes in SD. Lots of greenery that you feel like you're not in the neighborhood.

Very steep in parts and lots of loose rocks and gravel underfoot so be careful. Views from the top are fabulous

The two interesting things about this climb for me were the view of the city, and the interface of Park land with the surrounding development. I encountered a handful of mountain bikers which is fine, but one just needs to be aware they are coming pretty fast.

The last part is the best.

After passing Cowles Mountain I really enjoyed this hike!! Cowles is good and all but way too many people. The views are great and the trail is less busy. Probably ran into 2 other groups at the peak but only one other person on the trail. The last .25 miles of this trail was the most challenging, but it was a great climb! Will definitely do again.

Enjoyable views with a good workout on the way up.

The views were beautiful, and I went mid week when there wasn't anyone else on the trail. It was however very hot, and there is no shade along the trail. Be ready to be climbing a lot, and not feeling like there's much play-off. It was fine for the experience, but I wouldn't go again.

Great hike, did the round trip in about 1hr 45min. Definitely bring some water with you, it was heating up at about 11am when I was on my way back and I was glad I was able to drink some water while I was at the top. Amazing views from the top, even saw a Coast Guard helicopter flying around below me.

Keep your eyes on the trail, I was distracted by the view and came within a couple feet of a rattlesnake crossing the path, I just backed away slowly and gave him the right of way.

Very busy and a lot of rock hopping
