This is a tough, rewarding hike. The three miles or so after Bear Flats are on a relatively steep grade and it is strenuous. It’s doable and safe, but you just have to pace yourself and take your time. Doing this hike near dawn would be preferable as the temperatures can climb in the afternoon. Also, I would recommend bringing poles for the descent—they’ll make your life a lot easier and slightly less painful. I hardly ever use poles, but I was glad I had them for the way down on this trail.

This trail is a lot less crowded than the Devil’s Backbone route, which is a plus. It seems a lot of people do it as a training hike for Whitney and Cactus to the Clouds. If you want to challenge yourself, I highly recommend it.

I consider myself a relatively experienced hiker, having done many of the smaller peaks in the San Gabriels without much of a struggle. But this trail surely handed it to me. The elevation gain is not to be taken lightly - I started struggling about 2 miles in! I’m a 26 y/o female and this hike took me a total of 5 hours on the ascent (I had some nasty blisters to deal with, so that may have added some time), and about 3.5 hours to descend. But man, did I feel accomplished when I reached the top - it truly is a rewarding hike if you’re looking for some inner strength! Highly recommend for those looking for a challenge.

Great hike! I loved the views. The creek running by portions of the trail is beautiful and refreshing. It was wonderful to see so many out enjoying nature!

Hard.. very inclined but beautiful trips

Wow what a butt kicker...Beautiful trail. Took the lower trail out ( this is the trail from the lower parking lot. It was shaded almost all the way to the top of Mt Wilson. I didn’t run into any bugs not even at the top. Up to the camp the trail is pretty moderate after that it’s all incline and you will feel it. We arrived around 6:15 am and there was only about 4 parking spots left. Not sure about the overflow parking. On the weekends there is a cafe open at the top of Mt Wilson and there are restrooms as well.

Directions to trailhead put you in a neighborhood with no trail access. Eaton Canyon trail is nearby though so we went there

I love this trail. It is a brutal, gruelling hike up with about a 6000ft elevation gain in under seven miles.

This route is way more steep than the Baldy Loop (Manker Flats, Devil's Backbone, ski lifts, the Notch restaurant, etc). None of that is on the out and back trail. But it sure is beautiful and considerably less crowded.

I found this trail by mistake after summitting Mt San Antonio from the Manker Flats/ Devil's Backbone route, then mistaking Old Baldy Trail (Bear Canyon Trail) for the Baldy Bowl Trail. By the time I noticed my mistake, I was well into the descent so I decided to just go with it. I didn't realize that meant ending up in Baldy Village, about two miles downhill from where we parked. But the owner of the Baldy Lodge restaurant kindly gave us a lift back up to Manker Flats.

I'm honestly so glad we made this wrong turn, because we saw the most gorgeous views here. And we didn't see a single person on our descent in April. I came back yesterday (this time beginning on Old Baldy Trail), and the incline is a beast! There is very little shade past the first 2 miles, so facter that into your time and water planning.

If you're a real hiking fanatic, I highly recommend trying this route up Baldy. It is very trying and equally rewarding!

First hike for the Six Pack of Peaks challenge and I loved it. Went on a Wednesday and only saw 3 people the entire hike. The trailhead to go back down is kinda hidden, once you are in big parking lot look to the right. Would for sure do again!

I did this yesterday and it was very enjoyable. First the parking was super packed at 9:30am already. I did I two round in the lots then I was trying to find on the road and there was a nice guy pointing at his car that he’s leaving! Thank you sir!!

Anyway if I didn’t know about the trail, I would be sure to get lost. So you should check where the trail sprit. And like everyone said here it’s not 12 miles. It’s more like 16miles. (My phone die on the way coming down, so there is no accuracy but I was glad that I made it to parking lot) Last couple of miles going up was tough. I kept stopping and looking up when this uphill/switchback end.

I finished my entire 1.5l water going up so make sure you have enough water and snack to refill.

Going down from summit was confusing. There is no sign going down. I had to walk around the parking lot and observatory gate. There is a trail in the middle of parking lot. But again no sign!

Downhill was easy but sandy and easy to slide so be careful. At the white creek ? Trail sprit and I had no strength to go uphill at the beginning of trail, so I went right to chantry flat for another 3 miles.

Going up and down, there is plenty of gnat and mosquitoes. Be sure to spray bug spray everywhere and I saw a sign that there is a bear so maybe bring a bear bell.

I saw a deer family running by me and looking at me so it was a delightful moment and that it self made my day.

Excellent training hike - I took the loop via Stuyvesant camp to the top and returning on the opposite side.

1st thee+ miles felt great - I started early to avoid the heat (6:00am) and bugs. Once I passed Stuyvesant though the uphill kicked in. There is some serious uphill for 3 miles so be prepared for a long slog.

The observatories, exhibits and cafe were a welcome respite while preparing for the descent. The descent is tough - what goes up steep will come down steep so pace yourself.

My GPS unit had me at 15 miles and I spent a little over 7 hours on the hike (3 hrs up, 2 1/4 hr down and about 1.5 hrs trying to recover at the top and during the steep switchbacks). Key is to pace yourself and just keep moving.

Because of the lower elevation, heat will play a bigger factor so watch out - the downhill was interminable but the last 1/2 mile climb to the parking lot in 93+ degree heat was rough when your tired and ready to be done lol

Leaving early helped minimize the bugs while the afternoon sleep also seemed to have tempered them. I really only saw the gnats and they were less than many other trails

Overall excellent hike that let me know I had done some hiking! Be proud of your accomplishment

It took me 4.5 hours to make it to the top of Mt. Baldy and 3.5 to make it back down to the Visitor Center (where I parked). I left my car around 5 am. Don't forget your Adventure Pass. Finding the trailhead in the dark was difficult. My all trails app wasn't working without signal for some reason. I thought I'm supposed to be able to view the map without service? Anyway, I followed Bear Canyon Rd. (paved) up past all of the homes and finally found the trailhead. Just FYI, it's about half a mile up the road. Starting out, the weather was very pleasant. I didn't have to worry about the heat on the way up. The views are magnificent, especially while the moon is still out and the sun is just starting to rise. The weather at the top was very comfortable. I didn't have to whip out a long sleeve or my hat and gloves. I used this hike to train for Mt. Whitney. If Mt Whitney is similar to this hike, I'm in good shape! I thought it was tough but not so much that I ever questioned my abilities or even desire to hike it in the first place. At times, I was hiking on the balls of my feet, so it's pretty steep in sections. I definitely recommend hiking poles for the way down.

Great hike! However, like previous reviews stated it’s more that 12.6 miles. My fitness watch doc’d it as 17. 7 miles. Cafe at observatory was a lifesaver. Note: they close at 5pm.

We really enjoyed this hike! Not a lot of shade so I’d recommend going on a cool day. Tracking on Strava it said 6.9miles and 2,028ft elevation gain.

My favorite hike to frequent as a local from Claremont. Not sure if I would rate this trail as difficult. Moderate for sure. Only moderately difficult part IMO are the switchbacks nearing the saddle. Nice mix of shade and sun and makes for a lovely hike as it parallels the creek. Lots of Columbine wild flowers, manzanitas and pines.

Great hike super easy overnighter but tons of bugs

I love the hike, but it's extremely crowded on the weekends.

Definitely challenging. Gnats, mosquitos, and poison oak are in full effect. Going up thru Sturtevant is particularly steep in last 2-3 miles to the summit; other side is more gradual. But the entire trail was shaded (at least 80%, minus the summit).

All Trails' directions leads you to the summit (DON'T USE IT). Google Maps to Chantry Flats. We clocked the full loop at 14-16 miles, not the 12.6 miles on All Trails.

Cosmic Cafe is a legit place to eat. Apple pie with ice cream was out of this world!

I love doing this trail. Have done all but 2 of the trails that break off of the Saddle. I'm getting dropped off at the Icehouse Trailhead and getting picked up at Little Creek Rd, this Sunday.

completed this trail last weekend and we knew it was rated difficult but the mileage is way off. it says 12.6 but we charted 16.2 miles with an apple watch. make sure you have a full day to complete this hike. if you are not in top shape it will take you more than half the day. beautiful hike and definitely recommend.

Started early @5:00am to avoid heat once your close to summit old Baldy. Offered great views and great ascend and good training for Mt Whitney.

Did a solo trip with my dog. It was my first time making it all the way to mt wilson. Very difficult after sturtevant camp cabins all up hill. Amazing views. Definitely will go back on a cooler day.

volunteeer-led urban wild park hike with a group of 20. Great volunteers. Nice countryside and the limestone sink overlook is interesting. However, I prefer a less social hiking experience but that's not an option as the park access is regulated. Understandable, but disappointing nonetheless. Road noise as we hiked up the small ridge but that faded as we dropped down into the canyon on the back half of the loop. Personally I would rate this hike as easy.

It was a great hike. The weather was nice while we were there this morning. The hike was moderate with lots of rocks. On our way down, one lady hiker felt and the fire fighter has to come and help her out So hike carefully n watch your step.

this is the best hike in the LA area if u want pain, growth and amazing geography lesson. The duration of elevation gain is second only to cactus to clouds (cdc), i used this to prepare for Iron mountain which this hike gives u great views of along woth baden powell,ross,pine,dawson, Gorgonio and Jacinto, mt dissappointment just about everything in LA and san bernardino.

this hike takes time, strength, and patience do something else first if u are not absolutely sure of your ability. U will be completely exposed amd sweating all your sunscreen off if its hot keep that in mind.

First hike in CA since moving from Denver, and did not disappoint. Great mix of terrain and grade with some excellent views.
