This hike offered a quick escape from Denver heat today, but not much escape from crowds. We enjoyed the trail, but it was very crowded and of course, there was a lot of dog poop along the trail and two dogs off leash, despite someone asking the owner to leash them. I think this hike would be much better during the week; it was just too busy on a weekend.

I ended up hiking to the top of Bergen Peak. Definitely worth it to do that. It’s a long hike, but I wouldn’t characterize it as “Hard.” It’s a long moderate. Like many trails in Evergreen, alternations between rocky-narrow paths, forest paths, pretty summits, scenic views, aspens, and lovely wildflowers, especially by the meadows. But I was a bit bummed that I heard the cars on the highway almost the whole time. I tuned it out, and a few times amidst the aspens it was truly quiet. But that’s why I give four stars. Sometimes some mountain bikers come barreling down, and you’ve really got to have your wits about you. But otherwise, the views, the thick smell of pine all along the way, and the serenity of the hike, even on a Saturday morning, is why I live out here :)

This trail gets a bad wrap here! it was actually beautiful and the signage was just fine. I counted no fewer than 5 signs directing me along the trail. and the map IS accurate. just follow it while you are walking (pull out your phone when you get to a fork in the path) and if you take a wrong turn you can easily see it on the map on AllTrails.

Lots of people, but worth it because beautiful and unique rock formations. Make the trip if in the area. And it’s free.

nice 2 hour hike, trails are not marked very well in certain areas.

Nice to walk by the creek and around lakes— you can add more loops to make the hike longer if you want. Pretty prairie area with flowers and birds

Traveled with a 11 month old in a pack! Summit was breathtaking. The waterfalls are simple...not sure we found the real falls! There is a ‘creek’ area that was perfect for the little one to toddle around and throw rocks. I’d definitely recommend this trail.

great hike, not many people

good hike near denver

You will see disapointing views from others but ill just advise, this is a creek falls not waterfalls so its small. The upperfalls you will need to trek thru a creek to actually see the creek falls. Nice boulder formations surrounding it and hike itself is a nice figure 8 loop w 2 parking lots. Ive hiked this 2 times 9/2014 & 7/2018 and both times it was a great wooded hike.

Trail is not well marked for this particular route. It was beautiful but more crowded than others that are just as beautiful.

I would not recommend this trail even though I would say it provides a decent workout with some pretty scenery (nothing too special for Colorado IMHO). My boyfriend and I ended up getting lost due to the fact that the trails are unmarked. There are lots of unmarked forks you and you need to guess where you are going.

This was not a pleasant experience. We ended up walking miles more than we wanted to. All of this could have been avoided if there were signs and at least an accurate map that showed the forks.

Gorgeous! And easy with kiddos.

The trailhead for the Maxwell Falls lower trail is located at: 7627 S. Brook Forest Rd, Evergreen, CO 80439

I never write online reviews for anything, but I felt compelled to write one for this hike because it was great and I almost didn’t go due to all of the negative reviews that I read on this site and others.

I hiked on a Saturday, starting at around 10 am. The parking lot was full when I arrived, but there was still plenty of parking on the side of the road to the trailhead. It was about a five minute walk from where I parked to the trailhead.

There were plenty of other hikers around, but it was not at a level that I would call overcrowded for my tastes. If you want to go on a hike where you never see another hiker, this isn’t the trail for you, but we had plenty of time on the trail where we were the only ones around.

In other posts that I read, a big deal was made about bags of dog poop lying around on the side of the trail. I observed two bags during our hike, as well as a pair of men’s boxer shorts left on the side of the trail. Other than that, the trail was clean and in good shape.

The trail was picturesque and is nice and wide in some sections. The falls were not the most impressive I’ve seen on a hike, but they were substantial enough and worth visiting. We took some nice pictures in front of the falls.

We did the loop, and somehow it seemed like it was more in the five mile range or at least greater than the 4.2 miles that was claimed. The trail is moderate, with some uphill sections, but I wouldn’t call it challenging.

From reading other websites, I understand that the falls can vary in intensity due to rain, runoff, and other environmental factors, but when we went, they were definitely worth seeing. I brought five others with me on the hike, and we all thought that it was a fun and enjoyable experience. Based on my experience, I feel that this is a much maligned trail that doesn’t deserve the negative reviews that I read. We had a great time and I’m glad that in the end, I didn’t decide to go somewhere else due to negative reviews.

Awesome hike .. trails not clearly marked however the views of the water fall and cliffs were breathtaking

Very nice loop near the Colorado School of Mines campus. Would highly recommend to students looking for a walk to do in between classes.

Good for a run in the middle of the city!

Took our dog here a couple weeks ago nice moderate hike there and then it was pretty flat walking back which I loved haha. Beautiful overall in fact my company is going to use this location for a commercial!

Perfectly moderate trail. Lots of shade and also elevation changes.. up and down a lot of variety. Good dog trail. Everyone had their pet on a leash. Loved this one

First hike in Colorado in which I thought 'how the hell do I get out of here'. It's my fault. It doesn't claim to have all the glitz and glam of other mountains but I listened to a friend who said it was a great way to spend the afternoon and now I will never listen to them again. Underwhelming views pretty crowded and nothing that made it all feel worth it. I know, I know, I have a bad attitude. I honestly just don't like my job right now so it's reflecting highly in this review which is partially unfair but that's life.

Awesome trail- beautiful rock formations, trees and the falls! Even though there were a lot of people there it didn't feel too crowded as we got further into the woods. Only complaint- the trail was not super clearly marked- ended up accidentally taking a different path at an unmarked intersection, but it was a beautiful detour nonetheless!

Absolutely fantastic hike! We were unsure when we took the left trail both at the split but when we made it to the waterfall we had an absolutely blast!

There is plenty of opportunity to climb up the falls and get up close and personal with the water. Definitely would recommend as we plan to come back here often!

Great spot to both hike and camp! Park at the upper falls area and hike in with all your gear. Great spots right on the cliffs.

So pretty little hike, gorgeous plants and moss. Lots of little chipmunks to spot as well.
It was fun climbing up to the falls.
But the falls are really small, not quite as big as I imagined.
You can also climb up to the cliffs and get some great views!
The only downfall of this hike is the people.
WAY too crowded, and with that comes the trash.
Pick up your trash people. PICK UP YOUR DOG POO. And when you pick up the dog poo, also pick up and pack out the bag.
It’s simple really. Future generations will never get to experience trails like these if they are covered in your litter.

one of my favorites. great views. relaxing

Very fun hike! If feeling adventurous, you can climb some rocks and get up close and personal with the falls. Super shaded, and our dog loved it!

easy trail and a great little close hike
