Pretty tough with the ice. Definitely bring micro spikes, makes a huge difference.

One of the most underrated trails I’ve ever done. Absolutely breathtaking. Not too strenuous, but difficult for us Indiana folk because of the whole breathing thing.

Pretty slick and snowy, but well worth it.

This has been rebuilt and much steeper than before!!! Trail is going from rock step to rock step and kinda like doing high hurdles... lifting each foot up high but worth it

Great first hike of 2019! I really recommend microspikes as it is slick and icy.

A lot of fun but difficult with the snow. Shoe shoes are required

Beautiful setting. This is set as Easy however parking is a bit tricky and it's a pretty steep climb to get to the glacier. Was pretty slick with all the snow, will go again in spring.

I just moved here and found this hike a little challenging because of the altitude. the trail is pretty packed down so I did it in tennis shoes with no problem. a lot of people brought sleds that looked fun! I took a lot of breaks but the view was great.

Rangers recommmended that I did not go up the royal arch without micro spikes! Flat irons loop was icy and snowy as it is!

For someone not used to the altitude, this hike can be more challenging than most people have rated it. It’s short, but fairly rocky and steep. Combine that with the altitude, and some breaks may be necessary. Once you reach the top though, it’s worth the effort and you’ll probably want to hang out for a bit. Beautiful hike, but don’t underestimate it!

Beautiful trail, outside of RMNP gates. First visit 1/13/19 - snow on most of the trail, well packed and well traveled. Sunny skies and warm rocks to relax on. I left my snowshoes in the car - a few slippery spots where crampons would be helpful but not bad. Lake frozen solid. Well maintained trail allowed for trail running on the way down.

Challenging hike with beautiful views! If you have a normal compact car, you’ll have to hike the Spruce Lakes Trail before getting to where the Mohawk Lakes Trail actually starts. From there, it’s a lot of climbing uphill with steep rocks, but so worth it. Definitely make sure you see the waterfall on your way up (there’s a sign for it). The lower lake was pretty easy to get to, but the trail is a little hard to see/follow for the upper lake. Saw quite a few people fishing at the upper lake when we got there. Loved it!

Great hike with beautiful views along the way. Steady increase the entire way up. There were all ages and levels of experience doing this hike. As others have mentioned, a few slick spots but I was able to get up and down easily without microspikes.

We were there on 1/9. The trail had some slick spots but we were able to conquer it without microspikes and they probably aren’t needed since most of the trail was dry. The lake was frozen over and absolutely beautiful. Due to the government shut down, the garbage cans at the trailhead had a bag taped over them. The bathrooms were also closed. There is an outhouse near the top, be sure to bring some toilet paper with you!

Hiked at sunset on the 13th, used lights, spikes and pole for safety on the last third due to recent snow. Steady climb all the way with frequent 10-15" step ups, although the trail is well maintained and traversed. It was a cool down hike from a great week for some perfect overlooks on the way up as the Sun set over Estes Park. We went ahead and completed the hike after pictures heading up and the lake was frozen solid as usual. Did some handstands, and headed down. Great cardio hike any day.

a challenging hike especially if you’re not used to the elevation. Incline right away and pretty much the whole time, but definitely worth it.

Definetly the hardest hike I’ve been on, bring lots of water and a small snack. If you’re from the Midwest like myself be prepared for the elevation difference, lots of yawns.

I accidentally ended up on this trail after starting the flatirons loop and losing my way, and I'm so glad I did! The trail was definitely a bit challenging, by the time I was near the top I was asking people coming down how far it was. The incline is pretty steep for the first majority of the hike, but as you near the end the trail dips back down a bit before heading up, which gives those muscles a break for the last stretch. There are some sketchy climbs on big rocks, but I'm a very cautious hiker and it was nothing I couldn't handle. The view from the top is BREATHTAKING, not to mention the arch itself is of course cool (though I'm from Utah, so I have high standards when it comes to arches). My only big issue was portions of the trail with a certain amount of mud and snow; which of course I kind of signed myself up for by hiking in January. I would recommend this hike to anyone who likes a challenge, pretty trails surrounded by trees, and great views.

Great hike for the entire family! We battled 40+ mph winds and still had the best time! Can’t wait to do it again. We hiked on 1/4/18, completely snow-packed but made it even better. Kids slid back down the trail almost the entire way!

We saw 20-30 other groups out on this trail during our 3 hour hike today. Gorgeous views. No snow on the trail, but icy in spots as was mentioned a few days ago.

Only two types of vehicles can make it up the road, 4WD or rentals. We had a rental and if you took it slow, it wasn't much of a problem. This may be the prettiest start to a trail that I have ever hiked. A beautiful lake framed by the mountains, it was awesome. The only disappointment was that you could hear the falls from miles away but when you arrive, you can't get a good view of them.

nice hike, mostly dry on 1/6.

This is currently open but the parking lot bathrooms are closed due to the government shutdown. There is an outhouse 3/4's the way up. It's uphill the entire way to the lake, there were all ages and abilities making it to the top. Most of the trail was dry/dirt but there were sections that had snow and crampons/spikes were not needed up or the way down. Made it the top in an hour.

on Royal Arch Trail

I hiked this with a group in the fall. Outstanding hike and view at the arch. Hoping to trail run up to the "false summit" in the near future.

We did this trail end of July. Trail itself is rocky and steep but the reward is an amazing view of the lake and glacier. Hike up the glacier for more amazing views! People were sledding and skiing down the glacier!

Went to the top where it levels out today - used spikes for more sure footing but could be done without them. Such a beautiful, warm day!

Great trail with great views, but lake was almost completely dried up during August 2018. Other than that it was great!

Nice short hike, rather steep, cool arch. Currently icy in spots, microspikes very helpful.
