We parked up at the visitor center and walked the towpath to trail A. We did Trail A & C. Trail B is closed. Trail is A is a lot of climbing up and over rocks for 90% of the trail. I loved it. Ankles are a little sore but worth it. Follow the Blue blazes on trees/rocks. We began at 8:30 on a Saturday and it was very less people but it got much busier as day went on. Rocks can be slippery and sandy if it has rained. Be careful. Not a good trail for those who are timid or have knee issues.

Then we took the towpath to Trail C and that is a regular flat trail along the river. Easy to navigate.

River view is amazing and see it the whole way. Bring water and a snack if doing 2-3 trails.

Look....Don’t underestimate the difficulty of this trail. Although it’s listed as moderate, there are many obstacles such as fallen trees, overgrown shrubbery, and huge boulders that will render this trail not for the faint of heart. I recommend not going right after it rained because the rocks were very slippery and there were lots of mud puddles. My friends and I and my dog had a wonderful time even though some of us fell in the creek and or mud. I would definitely go again.

Fun trail, many rocks to climb and great views.

Nice spot for beginners like me, I try in the summer and mosquitos were in full force, will try fall and early winter to see how things go

I don’t know why people are saying it’s five miles. My tracker from the car was 4.0 miles which includes the 3-4 min we walked slightly off the trail.
All in all pretty manageable but if you have a kid under like 6-7 the far end when you go under the freeway you may need to carry them.
Pros: easy access in the heart of DC area, mostly shaded, scenic.
Cons: Unless you have headphones on you spend half of it listening to the cars on the road and the airplanes taking off from DCA.

Loved the side trails. Beautiful! Went on a weekday and there were few people.

Nice and flat. A few muddy spots and fallen trees (MTB obstacles). Good trail for intervals.

I run here all the time. Great trail that’s mostly flat and wide enough for multiple people. Perfect family trail and the marina has a carousel and mini golf in the summer.

Great trail around Burke Lake. Saw waterfowl and deer along the route. Easy access from multiple locations around the lake.

We took 3 kids, ages 9,6, and 4, and 2 dogs. The trail was fun but too long for the kids in the heat of August. It was 5 miles, not 3. A 3 mile trail would have been perfect, there were lots of downed trees which my kids like to climb over, river crossings and steep creek beds that we needed to use ropes to pull ourselves up. The dogs were able to scramble up ok but definitely fell a couple of times. We needed the GPS a few times when we lost the path. It’s well marked for the most part but definitely not each turn. We may do it again when the fall weather arrives;)

If you have iffy knees this loop is great. Very little asphalt mostly dirt and sand. If you are a trail runner great beginning for better things.

great hike. Section B was closed due to flooding. be prepared with a good amount of water

Hiked trail A. Great view, great workout. Has some challenging areas so, appropriate shoes are suggested. Will definitely go again. Does get a bit congested in the later morning hours.

Moderate tough with beautiful river side scenery and the sound of gushing river water.

It would have been a great trail if it did not go through the townhomes. It was a great walk though.

Great trail! We took our kids (ages 7, 5 and 4) who all rode bikes and rode the entire trail! Only a small portion at the beginning was paved (asphalt), the rest was a well established trail (dirt). We'll definitely be returning!

First, this is nowhere near three miles. We followed the route on the map exactly and it’s a full FIVE miles. So know what you’re in for.

This is a great hike if you’re looking for a moderate challenge with varying terrain.

I took a 4yo (girl), 10yo (girl), and 12yo (boy). I had to carry the 4yo at times. Several of the stream crossing are challenging. There are no bridges and so you have to hop/scramble across the rocks. One point requires ropes to descend and ascend a wide ditch. My 4yo piggybacked me for that part.

No way horses are doing this btw. Or mountain bikes. Lots of downed trees and rock hopping/scrambling.

The trail is also very poorly marked at portions. Without the gps and trail map, it would have been entirely unclear where to go.

In short, a fun, interesting, moderately challenging hike with a fair bit of variation that’s good for kids (if they’re up for five miles and you can carry little ones if/when needed).

Because I was running out of time I only did part B and the view of the river and wall of rocks was fenomenal

This is a great hike, beautiful views and so close to the city.

section A is great workout with amazing scenery. get there early to beat the crowd. definitely recommend starting at the trailhead closest to the visitor center and bring plenty of water with you.

Trail A was a lot of fun. Watch your step on this one =]

I did Billy Goat Trails A and C (B was closed). I also hiked a good bit on the tow path for the return trip. Get there early. I was there and ready to start at 7 am. Hardly anyone around. By 930-10 am, there were lots of people. this trail is good for hiking or running. Follow the blue markers. Also, I rec getting the pro version of All Trails. My parents called me while I was hiking. I got distracted and got off trail (badly). When I got off track, it was easy to find my way back using the app. NI encountered no mosquitoes, which was a bonus. Trail is very shady. I definite repeat.

A is a great hike if no medical conditions. Saw lots of young children having a great time!

Great trail for a couple hour hike. Fun but also a challenge. Great work out. Some type of hiking shoes are best for section A. Does get congested that’s why it lost a star.

Best in Maryland!

Good trail some parts get a little backed up with traffic. Get ready to climb rocks, decent physical challenge not too bad or exhausting.
