Just did an overnight hike on Mt. Mitchell trail a few days ago. We started at the black mountain campground. The weather was gloomy for most of the day but in my opinion perfect because the sun wasn’t beating down on us all day. When we got towards the top it started to clear up and the sun came out. Definitely a difficult hike, but worth every minute and every pain. We stopped at the top for about an hour to take pictures, grab snacks, and check out the gift shop. Was a little bit annoying to see people that drove up there buying memorabilia for a summit they didn’t conquer.... but to each their own I guess. After our break we headed back down to commissary hill to set up camp. Quite a lot of people camp there but there’s plenty of room and a good water source 2 minutes from the area. Unfortunately, it rained all night so we couldn’t set up a fire or hangout outside. Next morning we hiked back down and there’s a river at the end which was so nice to get into a soak my sore feet and cool off for a bit. Anyways a couple lessons learned for me as this was my first overnight hike and first difficult hike. I had plenty of snacks but I wish I would’ve brought sandwiches for the summit, I don’t know why but a sandwich would’ve been so nice. About 30 min into the hike my left knee started to ache with every step, thank god for all the walking sticks people left at the trailhead. I had one the entire way which relieved some pressure but I’m definitely looking into getting some trekking poles for next time. I also will start carrying some icy hot or tiger balm for muscle aches. I was carrying ibuprofen which helped some. I didn’t have hiking shoes, but I wore my military work boots which were just as good as far as grip goes but too heavy. I invested in some salomon pathfinders the day after we got back from the trip. My pack was way too big. I didn’t take the time to look for a good pack that would fit for me, I just bought off of facebook marketplace. Don’t get me wrong, the pack I got is quality, just not right for my size. It treated me well on the trail I just think a smaller pack would have my back feeling a little less strained. All in all, amazing hike. The overnight parking is just before the bridge that leads to the campground. You will lose service going out there so I suggest using a paper map or downloading the map on your phone so you can still use it when offline.

Hiked 7/19/18, left around 8 AM and parking lot was about half full. Took about an hour an a half up. I was a little confused, but you CAN swim at the top. Water is VERY cold but we also just got a lot of rain. Hopefully will warm up in a few days. Bring plenty of water 2-3 at least.

I’ve been to Mount Washington and the views there are better than this. Although this is the highest peak in NY, the trails are well-maintained. First time I did this with friends and we did it for 7.5 hours, round trip. It was tiring but indeed gratifying at the summit because it’s cooler and you can see parts of Quebec/Montreal. Bring a lot of water (3L at least) and chewable candies, it’ll help you maintain your glucose and stay hydrated. Beginners will find this challenging but doable.

Very difficult. Trail signs say more like 8.4 mi, loose rocks for much of the trail, no real leveling off or let up from the incline. With that said great views. Booked it and took 2.5hrs up, 2 down.

I thought this trail was pretty cool. Visited it twice, 1st time didn’t have enough time to hike it fully which was a shame because the second time was very dry. The water fall was not a waterfall. It was supposed to be 135 ft waterfall. It was still beautiful country tho. Tough for someone less experienced I think. Lots of rock and elevation. 106 heat index when my group trekked it. Still it had a few areas to filter water and plenty of shade.

I went on a perfect morning. Good vistas, nice burn in the legs going up and pretty easy walking on the way down. It took about 5 hours- spent about 45 minutes up at the top and took a few breaks.
It was steep at the beginning, but levels out quickly and I was surprised with how fast I got to the summit.

First Hike and First "Peak" to High Point since adding it to the bucket list. The trail is very clearly marked and it was fairly easy to hike. There is an alternate trail that is introduced part of the way up if you look at the placards. My son and I made our way to the summit, signed the guest book (in the ammo can on the display board) and then made our way down. It was warm with no breeze, the temperature was 82 degrees when we started. I am a portly fellow and far from in shape and it took us around 45 minutes to go up and down, so all in all, pretty easy climb.

This was a fantastic hike for views up and down. We did the trail counterclockwise, which I think made for a great ending along the Gulfside/Jewell Trail, which actually sparkles in the sunlight. Ammonoosuc Ravine trail is pretty straight ascent and lots of big loose rock at the top. We stopped at Lakes of the Cloud hut (bring cash for coffee, lemonade or a home cooked meal). Then about a mile and a half more to the summit (where there are lots of food options and a ride down on the railway). We overpacked for a cold summit and brought our own food. Also, it feels a little odd to share your accomplished summit with folks who drove up and have to stand in a line to take your picture at the top. But overall a good challenge and some breath taking views.

can't rate this appropriately. we have been planning this hike for over a month. went on their site and nothing mentioned that it was closed. very frustrating and disappointed. we will however come back and conquer this goal.

The trail was relatively well marked. There were a couple spots that we had to question whether we were pushing forward in the correct direction. We also were hiking this trail through a huge rain storm so it was fairly flooded in areas.

Most outstanding views seen here. Began hiking at 2AM for sunrise & hit it right on the dot. SO worth the early hours!!!

Great training trail for my Kilimanjaro summit. I made it! Enough steep spots to get the calves howling on the way up and the knees growling on the way back. A thirteener + with great vistas and a 3,000-foot rise from the trailhead parking lot or 2,000 from the really cool Williams Lake. Did it three times as part of my prep. Windy on top as others mentioned.

First 14er I ever did. Trail was easy to follow, lots of other hikers going up that day. Had to stop often to catch my breath.

Took me and a friend 2.5 hours to summit. Another 2 to return with lots of stops. Definitely worth the work, amazing views of the desert.

Enjoyed the walk with the family. It's well traveled and easily marked. The uphill climb was a surprise but I probably should have done more research on it. The family had a good time looking out over the mountains and, even with the fogged-in views, weren't disappointed in the least.

Hiked Humphreys Peak on 7/14/18. Im an avid hiker, 1/2 marathon runner, weight trainer, so I anticipated a 6-7 hour round trip hike based on reviews. So we started the hike around 630a. We anticipated rain, so we looked to start early, and I’m glad we did. Took about 2h45m to reach the top at a steady pace - including a few brief stops for water/snacks. The hike is “moderate” difficulty level, that is until you reach the 4 mile mark, with about a mile to go. Then, the hike then turns into a “difficult” level, as the last thousand or so feet are a burner if you move at a steady pace. Spent about 25 minutes at the top, as it was windy and quite chilly. Headed down, and the rain began, becoming more steady. Time down was around 1h30min - however we ran/jogged a good 80% of the trail down to beat the rain. Total time with all stops was 4h49min. Absolutely beautiful hike. Challenging/fun. Altitude played a minor roll around 11000 ft, most noticeably in the last 1000ft/1 mile. Water intake: Drank about 70 oz of water throughout. Nutrition: I recommend a margarita pizza from “pizzicleta” the night before & a med/light high carb breakfast. Very doable for most experience levels. Definitely recommend starting early during monsoon season. Can wait to do this again in the fall!

This is my third trip up the north side, more challenging and scenic than the Sylvan Lake Approach. Approx. 6-7 Hours up and back...and three bottles of water plus a Gatorade at the finish. Very hot, and a steady climb. Saw two other couples on the entire trek. Great views and places to eat lunch. A lot of horse droppings and the constant helicopters on their way to Mt. Rushmore made me feel like an ex-con on the run. Well worth it, only one stream and with all the horse activity I would be hesitant to drink even treated water.

We hiked up to trail crest on 7/15 (13,400 feet), and didn't get to summit. There was no snow on the trails and conditions were completely clear that day. No bear sightings, but there were a couple marmots after the 97 switchbacks.

We summit on 7/9 starting at 2am and we were able to summit by 7am, beautiful view and beautiful sunrise and great group to do this hike with. This is my 2nd time I summited Mt Whitney. The first time I did it in 2004 and it’s as beautiful as I remember. 14 years later, I’m glad I can still do this hike.

Started at sunrise. I drank 3.5 L of water, and used my fleece, beanie, mittens, and rain jacket as elevation increased. Very challenging and rewarding experience. My iPhone clocked 13.7 miles from parking lot to summit and back. The 1.5 miles from saddle to summit is completely exhausting.

I read on hiking sites to summit, or turn around by 10 am during monsoon season. Sleet and thunder started just after I summited at 10am. Very dangerous and scary to be above tree line in these conditions. Everyone scrambled as fast as possible to get below tree line. Once below tree line I was shocked people were still ascending!

I was disappointed at the unprepared hikers risking their own safety and the safety of first responders. Do not underestimate the dangers of a 12,000+ foot mountain! Come prepared and respect the power of Mother Nature. Its easy to understand why it’s such a sacred site for so many Native American tribes.

Good trail for even inexperienced day hikers. It for sure takes 2 hours with a small group and 30m at the falls. No chance of getting lost if you look for the red blazes on the trees.

We used this as a way to hike Mount Monroe and Washington. Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail followed a rushing river before climbing very steeply to lake of the clouds. The area is incredibly scenic and has wonderful views of Ammonoosuc Ravine. Mount Monroe had incredible views of the Southern Presidentials and Oaks Gulf. The trail then climbs along loose rock over the Bigelow Lawn and up the summit cone of Washington. The summit of civilized Washington and I didn’t bond well, since I prefer wilderness peaks. Not to mention the crowds of people who didn’t work for the views. Jewell Trail is definitely the best way to descend, you get a gradual descent along the Great Gulf and back to mid station.

First 14er yesterday... and I chose this one (or rather, my boyfriend did). It was a cool hike and I’d like to think I’m in good shape, but this is not an easy hike. I recognize now why they call them the Rockies, there is nothing but rock all over this mountain. The hike up was fantastic most of the way, but the elevation will get you with the terribly steep incline... now with that said, once you reach the top (10+ stops and 4 teary moments later for me) the views are astounding and you feel incredibly accomplished! On the way down, you should feel immense relief, however, your knees and hip flexors may take a beating... all and all it’s not all doom and gloom... it’s gorgeous and I would recommend if you’re looking for a challenge and youve done a couple 14ers... this is all

Marcy is the ultimate balance of challenge and reward. It’s a long, challenging 15 mile day with a lot of elevation gain, but it’s the peak that got me addicted to High Peaks Wilderness. It begins with a easy 2 miles to Marcy Dam, which has great views of Mount Colden. From there it’s 5 miles of rocks and badly eroded trail. The mountain runoff turned this place into a river on the rainy morning we hiked it. You don’t get any views until you begin the final push through the alpine zone. The above treeline summit of Marcy has spectacular views in all directions, you can see the whole range in all it’s glory. The clouds cleared for a brief 10 minutes as if the reward us for our efforts. When they came back, we headed out. Definitely would recommend this to anyone who likes strenuous mountains.

Very interesting hike for sure. The trail meanders along the border on the way to Frissell. Crossing the summit of Round Mountain in Connecticut. This peak has a cairn and nice views of the next mountain you climb. The trail is quite rocky, similar to the Skyline Trail at Blue Hills if you’ve done it. It gains elevation quickly, but not for a long. Frissell has no views, but a short spur will take you to a summit registry box. Following the red blazes will take you back to Connecticut and over to the high point. This has a view, a cairn and registry box with a log and a cardboard “Connecticut” sign. The trail to the high point could use some maintenance, it has become quite overgrown in some places. Beyond this a steep downhill will take you to the Tri-State Marker. We stopped here instead of continuing to Brace Mountain due to poor trail marking and confusing splits just beyond the marker.

It’s very short, with no views, but still a decent stroll and a high point nonetheless. The trail is very well marked and easy to follow. There’s a cairn at the top which marks the high point.

A 6hr round trip going up the Mt Mitchell trail and down Higgins Bald. I can’t really recommend Higgins Bald as it’s a touch overgrown and the roots here are particularly evil. This is not a “scenic” trail, but the woods are beautiful and peaceful. Being from the Midwest, this hike was epic. To walk out onto the summit after climbing nearly 3700 ft is a feeling I won’t forget soon. It is hard but completely doable. Highly recommend hiking boots with solid ankle support and good traction. I didn’t use trekking poles but they would have made my life a lot easier! It’s definitely a popular hike; I got to the trailhead at 8:30am on a Saturday and the parking lot was already full! Passed a few people going up and even more going back down.

*Be warned that it is very likely the summit will be covered in clouds and fog! A man I met on the top said he’s done this hike 3 times and seen only clouds. It’s still definitely worth doing in my opinion!

Did this hike today 7/14/18. Started at 6:30 am and arrived at the top at 9:30 am. Spent 18 minutes there and made it back in 2 hours. Weather was overcast and about 58°. Ground was wet from the recent rain fall which allowed the forest service to open the forest on 7/11/18. There was low clouds the entire day and could not see anything at the top. A rain cell was moving in so I got off the top just in time for a good rain to begin. It rained the entire rest of the hike back. I brought 2.5 liters H2O and drank 1.5 liters. I brought way to much food also. It was a difficult hike but the weather helped reduce my need for water and food. Start early to avoid thunderstorms. I also think poles are a good choice for the unstable footing at the top but I’m 59 years old and need them.
