pretty nice little hike, wouldn't recommend on a wet day. awesome scenery

Nice hike with a good view at the end. Good view of Seattle on a clear day.

The nature trail, botanical garden, picnic area and the mountain hikes at Kalopa offer something for everyone! This is an underused gem of the island. Bring shoes that can tolerate a sometimes muddy terrain and mosquito repellant. Wear layers as —with many places in Hawaii— the weather may change rapidly. When we hiked (July) the wild ginger was in bloom on the perimeter trail and it was heavenly. Another tip: until AllTrails lists the other hiking trails, I recommend taking a photo of the map at the trailhead for navigation. The old growth Eucalyptus in this forest is Ent-like. Be prepared to be in awe.

When you see pictures of Hawaii that aren’t just from beach resorts, this is what you think of. The black sand beach is spectacular and the hike is a fun in/out with the option to extend a little. If you can, plan to get in the water. Few places on earth as wholesome as being in the ocean on this beach

Enjoyable trail to visit and easily accessible -

Cool if you've never seen a lava tube before.

Beautiful trail!! You may have to stop from time to time just to take in the views.

Nice trail. Saw one post that it was not well marked, but only found that to be true near the top where trail changed names. Rated a 4 b/c we ran into dirt bikers on trial, not real the reason I hike.

Beautiful hike! Like others have said, it could be better marked in some places, but otherwise offers beautiful views.

First 3/4 of the hike is under forest cover - nothing much to see. If you have a clear day, the view payoff at the end is worth it! There is a steady incline, but nothing too steep. Lots of rocks and roots. We passed horses, motor bikes, mountain bikes and other hikers - all were polite and courteous.

was muddy from the rain today but still a good time.

Beautiful trail and views. Bottom half is flat and wooded and upper half is more steep and does not have tree coverage. Could be better marked.
Fun to see horses on the trails.

Discovery pass needed before getting there. No phone signal at parking lot so take directions!
Well maintained trail with great views of the Olympics. Hiked with a four year old.
Make sure to stop at the water on the way back and soak those feet!

Hiked 7/5/18. Perfect day, beautiful views. The logged area allows for sweeping views of the Olympics. I thought the view there was even better than the view at the top! It was a little hazy at the top, though, so couldn’t see Mt. Rainier this time.

Amazing views

Fun little trail with some nice lookouts. Seattle off in the distance was cool.

Beautiful! Very short trail. Might become difficult if it rains.

Super fun and great view from the top. Not difficult, but you can feel it in your legs the next day!

This is not a real long hike, about a mile or so up and down. It offers stunning scenery and places to wander, sit, and contemplate the beauty of nature. Much of the valley floor is off-limits, but one can wander the black sand beach and coastal trails. My wife discovered a swing hanging from a tree in the woods. She was delighted to use it for a moment. Best time to go is early morning as there is very limited parking. Also, be forewarned that the trail can be very slippery.
We wandered the shops in Kapa’au and Hawi, had lunch, then hiked Waipi’o Valley (about an hour from Hawi) in the afternoon around 2:30 as many people were beginning to leave there.

Gorgeous. Be prepared for drastic weather changes even though the hike is no longer than 30 mins! Our family had a lot of fun on the rope swing near the beaches.

Beautiful drive, don’t forget to turn around and look at the view behind you as you drive along. Even though it’s such a popular drive, we were often the only car for several miles at a time. The views at each of the stopping points are lovely (especially the end at the arch). The ice popsicle being sold at the end of the drive is pricey, but delicious!

Breathtaking view! It’s a short hike, and well worth it.

Not a difficult hike. We had a four year old hiking with us and he hiked the whole trail. Just need to be cautious when it has rained because the trail gets very muddy in areas and can be very slippery.

Nice walk through native forest with explanatory booklet. Quite muddy but worth it.

Great hike. Must do. One of our favorite hikes. Great camping spots at the bottom as well.

Great hike. Very muddy though all the way up to my ankles. Very steep at some points but totally worth the view.
