I’ve done this trail a few times and it’s really fun. MAKE SURE YOU GO ON A CLEAR SKIES DAY. If there are low hanging clouds or you go early in the morning you can’t see anything from the top. Trail can be pretty muddy sometimes and if you’re hiking in the dark there are low hanging branches that you can hit your head on.

In the middle of the trail there is a covered picnic table to take a break at.

Very short trail. You have to pay to park here and the trail is always busy. At sunrise there are nice views

Fun trail to run. It can be pretty crowded and parking can be hard to find due to the proximity of the beach. The trail itself has multiple ways to the top so every time can be different. A few small places to rock climb. At the top there is a beautiful view of the beach and at sunrise it’s indescribable!

It was a nice short hike, I don't think I'd rate it "moderate" compared to other "easy" hikes we have done on oahu, I'd say it was easy. It hadn't been to rainy lately so the mud was available. Beautiful trees, flowers, birds, views, & pigglets!

The falls were a bit lackluster but the trail was spectacular. Flowers, trees, and gardens on both sides.

Hiked today 4/22 at 9am. Street parking was easy and safe. Expect mud and to get your shoes and shorts muddy. The trail comes to a y as your start to decent towards the water. If you go right, You'll end up downstream and will have to hike up 1/4 mile to the falls. We jumped off the lower pool cliff into a 10ft pool. Upper falls was beautiful! We joined two other parties during the hike and had fun. Mahalo.

Beautiful views at the top and the military history is neat. Had a guy feint from heat at the top who had to be flown out by helicopter. Not a long hike but stay hydrated with the heat and stairs.

I did this when I first got here. There’s better views out there that involve an actual hike

The trail was muddy but we went the day after a good rain.. I thought it made it a lot more fun! You’ll want to pack swim wear, it also has a rope to swing off and jump in at the falls! Nice hike in, have a nice picnic and head out with plenty of day light. Will definitely do it again on my next visit to the island.

Good little hike not to bad it gets muddy in the beginning if it rained but I would just plan to do it if your going to go to the beach right afterwards!

I do this hike weekly. Nice and easy a lot of people usually stop at the pillboxes but the hike continues on I say stop enjoy the view get pictures and then continue on.

Busy, but awesome views!

Watch out for broken glass! the start is nice and easy but there is a lot of broken glass, so watch you fur babies. Definitely in the harder side of moderate but I really enjoyed it!

Very muddy when we went, so it felt pretty dangerous and scary at times. But so worth it once you make it to the waterfall and swim in the water!! Easier coming back than going down. 100% recommend, would wear hiking shoes and bring bathing suit!

Easy walk, but usually very crowded, which isn't fun IMHO. The views are pretty, but doesn't make it worth freaking with the amount of people.

Decent little hike with a mediocre view of North Shore. The graffiti art up at the pillbox was my favorite part which somewhat speaks to the lack of difficulty or reward on this one. Good for the family or bringing the dogs.

A fun quick hike, the stairs at the topi are killer but well worth the view from the top!

Short easy hike. Go early to avoid large crowds.

Good hike for beginners. Nice view at the top.

Narrow and a packed. Don’t mind the being packed but the narrow trail was annoying.

Amazingly beautiful hike! Completely doable with small children! Super muddy and slippery after or during rain.

Very easy and accessible for any age, heavily trafficked. However, mostly on the weekend, and holidays. Rather rewarding waterfall, and lagoon at the end.

LOVE this hike! the views are breathe taking! not much else to say that hasn't already been said.

Steep trail, definitely not an easy one. But you’re so immersed in how gorgeous it is, that nothing else matters. Slippery when wet. :-)

Easy first hike!

I went late March after some rain. Incredible hike. Falls, swimming hole, and cliff jumping were great though- so awesome. I’ll tell you parts of this, going down more so than up imo, are very hard though. Very steep parts and slippery. I did about 6 hikes in Oahu and this was my favorite.

Great views. Took about 45 minutes to make it to the top. Easy hike but too crowded

I’ll climb the stairs Wed, April 11th for the 239th time.

The most recent post on my Instagram @Hawaii_Mountain.Man.Matt will give you an idea for an impactful photo perspective.

5 things you should know about the hike:

(1) It is the safest way to reach that elevation on Oahu.

Over the last 70+ years, no one has ever died falling on the stairs*.

(2) There is a ton of trash at the top.

Bring a folded heavy-duty trash bag to help with that.

(3) No matter what, don’t go near homes!

Think: when is the last time you woke up at 3am and whispered: "Honey I think there's someone outside the house!"

Two people have recently been shot on the street by a high powered air rifle fired near the intersection of Kuneki and Makena. That was wrong of the shooter, but also not surprising.

(4) The back way is more dangerous, but worth considering.

Near the base of the stairs, there is one unmarked Honolulu Police Department vehicle roaming to catch hikers.

After the November 12th escape of killer Randall Saito from the mental facility behind the neighborhood, security is on best behavior using off-road vehicles to apprehend hikers.

On a usual morning, a roving HPD officer, a stationary guard and two roving guards secure the area.

The penalty has some variables, but here are the components:

(1) $1,000 fine
(2) Jail, no longer than 6 months. (incarnation is rare)
(3) Legal fees (a defense attorney charges $800 - $1,500 for the case)
(4) Usually 80 hours of community service.
(5) Legal fees for expungement.
(6) Visa/Immigration hurdles
(7) Impact on professional life.
(8) Return travel and accommodations to attend court, community service, etc.

The setback ranges from $3,000 for simple cases, up into the hundreds of thousands over the length of a career for military members reduced in rank, folks who lose their security clearance or a professional license, etc.

Going up the front way, as amazing as it is, is not worth playing Russian roulette with the penalty, so don’t “just risk the ticket”.

Have a plan

Tip:

‘Three routes through the bamboo forest’ would be where I’d be if I were looking to catch you. Just saying.
