Pleasant, easy and seldom crowded. Perfect warmup for more strenuous hikes. Bird song was magnificent and we saw a GIGANTIC praying mantis walking across the trail!
One of the most beautiful hikes I’ve ever been on
The overlook was kind of overgrown for short people like me!
We hiked to the beach and took the “shuttle” back to the parking lot. Insanely stunning views throughout the hike. Loved being able to get really close to the water. My running shoes weren’t the most comfortable given that the entire trail was essentially a dirt road, but the scenery made sure I didn’t pay attention to my feet too much :)
Once in a lifetime scenery
Beautiful and remote hiking along the coast to the most incredible green sand beach. The day we went it was WINDY. The trail is completely exposed so bring lots of sunscreen. It’s also quite rocky so bring good shoes. We swam at the beach as the current was not strong. The trail has become various 4x4 paths but the vehicles don’t distract too much. If you want to add on miles, turn right at the bottom of the first hill and hike out the coast to the cliff jumping spot (rather than drive). This area reminded us of Mahaulepu trail in Kauai. Awesome day!
The coastline and hills were beautiful, but did start to feel one-note. It felt *way* longer than anticipated and was incredibly muddy. I went in expecting this to be a 45-hour walk to a beach but instead it was a more legitimate hike on a 4-wheeler path. I might’ve enjoyed it more if I went in with that understanding.
I loved this hike but theres a few things I'd do differently. Here's the pros: the coastline and crashing waves on lava rocks are spectacular. You are walking through rolling green hills contrasted by red clay colored dirt trails and the blue ocean alongside you. The grass alongsude the trail blows in the wind and it is truly a storybook serene. The hike is relatively easy as far as the the workout goes. The cons... portions of the trail is very rocky which can be tricky amd uncomfortable even with hiking boots. Occasionally the wind does whip a little sand here and there. The hike itself feels waaaaaaayy longer than the 2.5 or whatever miles out. Like significantly longer. The locals do offer rides, 20 per person round trip. We opted to hike down and had hoped to grab a ride back. Big mistake. We went down at 4pm amd did not see one "shuttle" truck there. We were nervous to get stuck out there after dark. Luckily we made it back right as the sun set. 1 hour and 15 min out, about an hour back in. We had been hiking all morning and afternoon in VNP so we really didn't want to hike back in but we didn't have the option. The green beach is tremendously beautiful. Its something to marvel at really. It was almost empty at 5pm when we arrived on a Sat. I would 1000% recommend this hike, just know the 5 mile in and out is super deceiving. I'll take a local up on the shuttle option if there's ever a next time.
Nice walk on paved area
Gorgeous sunset views. Carry a jacket, beanie and gloves as it becomes cold very quickly.
Super windy the whole way. No shade! Locals give rides to the beach on the back of trucks for $10 one way $20 round trip. The payoff at the green sand beach is worth it.
Fun hike with a nice reward at the end. Virtually no shade on the trail so come prepared. Not too busy in the morning, but a lot of people were coming in as we were heading out.
Worth it
Trail is brutal in the heat but the payoff is worth it
As others have said, this is not really a trail but rather a rutted 2-track where the four-wheel-drive trucks take the lazy beach goers. There was a lot of runoff from recent rain so it was very muddy and we had to take a bunch of detours To avoid large pools of standing water. Once we got to the beach we were a bit disappointed. It’s sort of a drab brown colored sand, calling it green is a bit of a stretch. It was good for the exercise but I couldn’t recommend it.
Quick, easy, paved path but not much to look at during. And the overlook is overgrown with trees so there’s not much of a view there either :/
This is less of a trail and more of following paths cars have made. It’s a long walk, we made it in about an hour keeping a good pace. The beach itself is really cool. I will add that you can buy a ride from several locals that are in the parking lot, I’ve heard this is illegal from a few different sources.
So unique with the green sand!
