Very fun for families, and it is easy & quick enough that even young kids stay motivated. My 4 & 6 year olds had a very easy time, despite the mud.
Park at the back of the golf course and walk up the first clearing. There’s an old metal chain blocking cars from driving up the hill. This is the start of the trail...it’ll soon come to a large graffitied basin. Turn left right before you reach it, where there’s a clearing in the trees with an obvious path up. This first 10 minutes was the muddiest for us, and it’s red mud so be prepared for stained clothing.
Follow the trail thru the obvious path (marked with pink ribbon every so often, but also pretty easy), and then turn right when you reach the tree with blue markings. This point is about 5 minutes from the falls.
There’s only one point where we thought we may have gone the wrong way, but you just need to duck down theu the tree branches and walk over a sort of rock wall. It’ll open again within about 20 seconds.
The falls are awesome! We went the day after a rainstorm, so the water was really going. It’s fresh water and is safe to play in! There’s a shallow pool right at the base of the falls that’s perfect for kids and adults alike. There’s even a large rock right in the middle that’s perfect for sitting for a snack or a photo op!
My kids easily tolerated going barefoot in the pool. The water flows pretty hard, so watch young kids with getting under the fall. There are also some easy spots to climb up the surrounding rock walls.
Overall, a very family friendly hike with a cool payoff! Especially good for young kids or people not accustomed to the more strenuous paths.

tourist heavy, but a nice waterfall.

A very easy hike with lots of views. It’s one I can bring visitors on who I’m not sure are that into hiking, but appreciate being in paradise. If you’re looking for something challenging, this is not it.

Fun and steep

Not closed!
Not easy, wear real shoes not “slippas”

100% worth it
Wear mosquito repellent or bring someone the mosquitos like more than you!

Gorgeous!

Pillbox gives great views of the ridges and the ocean. It's a good workout, but make sure to complete this before noon. The sun beaming down on you makes for a very warm experience quick. after the first 2 bunkers, it's not needed to go any further. I went a bit further but eventually turned back because those give the best views.

I would suggest not doing this on a rainy day because there are a handful of very muddy steep slopes that would make for a not so fun time unless you are wearing spikes on your shoes/boots.

Park by Lanikai Beach and walk to the trail. Afterwards go rest and hangout at the beach!

5/5 because it's a solid hike, brings great views, and is next door to one of the more enjoyable beaches in Oahu!

Good place to check out the waves, incredibly blue water, and its pretty much an extension of the China Walls. As mentioned, it's not a trail!

4/5 because it's not a trail, but I would suggest friends to check this out if they came to Oahu.

I went on this hike for sunrise. It feels like the stairs are endless, but overall it was easy and straightforward as long as you have strong lower body/legs. You only need a bottle of water for this one. I would suggest not going on this hike for anything except sunrise because the sun is killer for nonstop stairs walking. There is one segment of maybe 30 steps where there is a "drop" if you fell, but as long as you stay low it's really nothing to be concerned about. There is an alternative route to bypass this segment to your right when going up.

4/5 because it is not an adventure, just a climb to the top. Worth the hike.

@nickn0it on Instagram for a view of the stairs

Great family hike to the best waterfalls we saw on Oahu. About 2-miles from the parking area. Very lush and beautiful plant life on a trail they have used for the filming of Lost, Hawaii 50, and the Jurassic Park series. Note - you cannot swim in the waterfall pool. Also if you get there before 8 am the parking attendant will not be there but he/she will likely leave a pay on exit reminder on your windshield,

Hiked this today 10/16/18. Trail extremely muddy after rain last night. It would probably take weeks for this trail to dry out, so expect major mud the entire time. I wore strapped Teva’s and it was much better vs boots as for portions of the hike I just went though the river vs the extremely muddy trail. Bring a towel to wipe off after!

Extremely difficult to navigate. We had to be rescued. Make sure you go very early to allow way way way more than enough time to get back before dark because you most likely will get lost more than ten times. Even following the ribbons will lead you in circles and going the wrong way.

Decided to check out the waterfall today, it was a nice walk through the forest, took about 20 minutes to reach the waterfall and went for a dip.
The water was crispy cold but it’s something you should definitely do!!

Difficult, but if you take your time definitely not impossible.

We hiked to the marker and back which was closer to 2.5 miles from where we had to park, down the road. A lot of people to the first pill box, a little drop off to the 2nd and next to no one goes to the marker. Fabulous 360 views of the ocean, beaches and the mountains to the interior. Pretty steep start to the first pill box but not far.

Hard to follow trail but we made it to the falls. We were unfortunately caught in some intense rain and so it was very slippery.

cash grab. free parking to the beach if you do not mind the walk.

Fun easy hike - as long as you do not mind getting VERY MUDDY and wet. Without the mud this would be an easy hike. This is only moderate because of the mud and potential to slip and fall. The reward is the falls at the end and the jumps/swim. Bring extra clothing/footwear and a bag for the dirty/wet shoes and clothing

Super muddy. Very slippery.

Wow, I definitely did not give Koko Crater the credit it deserved. It was very challenging - I had to stop numerous times and catch my breath, and I'm a fit guy. The view of Hanauma Bay is breathtaking, and this is truly the first hike that I've done where I felt so proud to finish it at the top. Be wary of the bridge portion mentioned below though - it is a bit scary. Go around if you're afraid of heights or don't have good balance.

went on this hike midmorning to early afternoon. very muddy conditions on most of the trail. was going to do waterfall side trail but very muddy and overgrown that way. nothing too special views wise but a very nice area and good place to get a hike in. bug spray a must

A beautiful place to relax and stay for some hours. The nature is amazing and the whole area is pretty clean.

I enjoyed this hike. The first hour (we went counter clockwise btw) is mostly an incline of tree roots then you begin to wind around the summit and descend. WEAR BUG SPRAY. BRING WATER. Oh and it may be a bit muddy in some areas. WATCH THOSE RIDGES! Otherwise have fun!

Not really a hike but a fin side excursion if you are doing some of the other hikes (Koko Head, Makapu'u, Diamond Head) in the area. The sitting cave is awesome.

This hike will definitely get the heart rate up and the legs a little tired. Most of the hike,as mentioned above, is a linear hike up the old rail line. Close to 1,000 feet in 3/4 -mile. Great views of Waikiki and more.

Very beautiful. Also very slippery.

Very beautiful! slippery

Fairly easy / kid friendly hike around the arboretum. Plenty of beautiful plants and birds to check out.

Very muddy as we started in the rain but that also kept the crowds down. It was an athletic trail that beginning hikers can handle- I wouldn’t bring a little kid on this one mainly due to the slipperiness and sometimes more difficult steps. Overall, this was exactly what we were looking for in a rainforest hike to a waterfall. We didn’t swim but you definitely could.

Super fun and easy. My 4 year old had no problem!!
