Beautiful, short, relatively steep trail to the bottom. Slippery at the start, but 1/2 way down there were enough rocks & boulders to assist.

The beach was serene. Not a soul around which made it very peaceful.

Spectacular views! We did this in the light rain and it was muddy and slippery. Would not have been worth it in heavier rain, but as it was, we loved it. Some folks we passed found it easier to do with a walking stick. Given the mud, I thought the way down was much harder than the way up.

Great views, of black sand beach and lush green valley. Easy trail with about six switchbacks down to the beach, can be slippery or muddy when wet ~20min down ~25min back

Most of the “trail” is a road (rough asphalt on the left side; lava rock gravel road on the right). You start on the asphalt but we took the oak trail through the grass (off to the right) and walked the gravelly side on the way up. You’ll get a workout, but it’s definitely doable. We passed lots of cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and native birds. 4 stars instead of 5 just because it’s mostly a road and not much shade, but it was pleasant - only saw two other hikers.

Intéressant à voir!!

Enjoyed this trail as it was exactly what I was looking for after relaxing at the beach a couple days, nice views and a good workout. It is strenuous at times uphill climb that will keep your heart pumping. The only downside is the trail is somewhat poorly marked which is not a big deal if you have this app.

Wow. Just wow. Worth it to keep hiking up the mountain past the beach

Loved this hike. I only hiked down from the Lava Tubes trail. It was voggy and late in the day. The descent through the rainforest onto the crater was surreal. We are heading to the big island again in January. I sure hope this trail opens up again. It appears to be closed.

Trail closed as of 9/25 for mud slide.

It is like nothing else you will ever do. You will be hiking on old lava flows and come across an opening where you can see the old road and a stop sign. Other times you will see the glowing lava beneath coming up through the cracks over which you are walking. Once you get to the end you see lava tubes pouring out from the side of the cliff into the ocean creating a lake of lava that is constantly battling with the incoming surf for where the land ends and the ocean begins. It is a sight you can never forget.

Also try to be aware of your surroundings. The park service will have light beacons every mile to help keep you on course, but when the terrain is uneven the next beacon might not be immediately visible. When we hiked out there, on the way back we saw a flashlight off in the distance start waving at us. It was a guy that had become disoriented in the dark and was wandering for about an hour trying to find his way back. There are other instances where people have been lost for days. Be careful on this trail because the ways you could get injured or die are different from other hikes. There aren't many other trails where you could fall through an active lava tube and instantly perish.

Not much of a hike but an absolutely amazing waterfall! Unfortunately your not able to get very close to it but definitely worth checking out.if your spending any time on the big island.

Short trail with amazing views! Steep walk down to the shore. The surf is heavy and the beach is rocky but it really is something special to look at with all of the dramatic cliffs sides.

Did this on Sept 11, 2018 fortunately got some cloud cover as it can be hot. The first mile or so is on an old road and nothing special. Then you ascend through grazing land. I was nervous I'd encounter a bull, but saw now cattle at all, just a few goats who are running wild there. The road was largely dug up some folks told me it is wild boar. Beautiful green grassland and a moderate climb with a rewarding view at the top and cool breezes. There are a couple of benches there and I contmplated the amazing beauty of this island and actually had tears in my eyes. I began my hike at 8:15 ad was at the top a bit before 10. Do it!

amazing views!

slippery because it rained. better go barefoot than in flip flops (as we've seen people do pin the trail). take the trail through the forest to the other end of the beach. looks like some place from Lord of the rings.

Great trail! You’re up in the clouds, so areas of the trail can be a bit slick with the dew/rain. But the hike is nice and short, and the views are gorgeous!

beautiful but a little intimidating when you hate steep dropoffs. I would consider it a bit dangerous for little kids, was a bit challenging if you have a bum knee....the views were breathtaking.

fun hike with great views, had been raining the morning of, making the trail quite slippery.

The path is a paved loop. I’m glad we started right because we witnessed the lush rainforest then worked our way towards the waterfall. I realize the beauty of paved paths is you don’t have to watch your step (as much) and you can actually take in your surroundings. The path takes you by rivers, bamboo, flowers, lookouts, and other sights.

We did get a few bug bites the size of quarters, which itched for almost a week. It’s been over a week now and they’re still there though smaller. Yes, we wore bug spray.

Shouldn’t get wet on this trail, as it’s far from the fall itself. Sometimes you’re in a canopy and sometimes open air. The hike is easy. I took my grandpa and he loved it.

The entrance fee is cash only but there’s an atm. There is a bathroom onsite too. My uncle asked for the dried bananas sold off the road to here, so those must be good.

Enjoy!

Great walk/hike so much to see and smell. It was a little overcast the day we went but still so amazing.

A nice afternoon hike. Take your time a little, the elevation gain will slow you down a little. The first part on the road isn’t particularly pretty, but the O’hia trail cutoff is really nice. I recommend that detour to get some natural Hawaii sightseeing.

Loved the old highway and one way bridges. Limited parking. Loved exploring the cove. Not a swimming place. Very dangerous waves

Enjoyable loop. Lots to see, so nobody complained about the climb coming out.

When you see pictures of Hawaii that aren’t just from beach resorts, this is what you think of. The black sand beach is spectacular and the hike is a fun in/out with the option to extend a little. If you can, plan to get in the water. Few places on earth as wholesome as being in the ocean on this beach

Great hike close to Kona and Waimea. Gave it four instead of five stars because of the long walk on paved road. Second half is up through green grass, sheep and goats. Beautiful views even on a hazy day!

Really nicely maintained trail with paved paths through lush and beautiful rainforest. It was a short trail, but I think it's a must-do if you're visiting Hawaii. You can only see the falls from a distance though, so don't expect to get too close... You won't get wet.

Beautiful trail!! You may have to stop from time to time just to take in the views.
