this trail is STEEP, so wear shoes with good tread.
a little muddy in places but not too bad.

i only went to the first peak; unfortunately i didn’t have time for all 3. the view from the top is gorgeous; you can see all of Kailua and then some.

there are ropes, but they are old. if you can, try to freeclimb the rocky parts.

overall, if you are in shape, this is a super fun trail and i will definitely be coming back to it.

if anyone is looking for a hiking partner I would love to go this week (21st-24th). please just email me @ hannahmariermt@gmail.com

If there was an extra hard, it would be this Hike. Come ready to rock climb, because there’s a ton. Totally worth it! The view is amazing and the hike is challenging.

It's uphill, but paved so seems more trail than hike to me. Regardless, beautiful views from the top.
Hiking down the "secret" trail to the tide pools definitely increased both the challenge and the adventure.

One of my all time favourite hikes. From jungle to clay slopes and steep rocky scrambles, this trail has it all. Amazing views to be well deserved after a challenging climb.

First of all, the parking! Wow!! can't do much about it, but when when you get a spot your good. The trail is paved all the way and you are in a moderate incline. Worth a morning stroll as we were fortunate to see a few whales early noonish!

The trail beyond the Pillbox area is private property and the AllTrails map illegally traverses and trespasses on this property. In addition, the descent at the end of this trail and other portions are simply not maintained and hiking loosens dirt and debris which wash down into Lanikai Bay. The environmental degradation not only clouds the water but kills coral and other reef creatures. The descent is also hazardous and numerous people have been taken off this trail by emergency teams. Hikers should not use the trail beyond the Pillbox.

Short, paved walkway. Beautiful views at the top. It’s more of a uphill walk than a hike, but certainly still enjoyable.

This’s a decent hike. Way too many people on it trying to catch the Sunset leaving very little Realestate to call your own unless you arrive super early. Head lamp is helpful if you’re going up and it’s still dark outside. After watching the sunset we continued on and around to the other end of the trail. It’s difficult going down and so pray it’s dry or hasn’t rained a few days. The views are beautiful.... But the hike is okay and a decent workout going up and down the trail with decent views.

Trail starts off steep and muddy so be sure to grab a walking stick at the beginning of the trail. After the muddy start the trail dries up and flattens our with a few random steep areas. The view at the top is breathtaking and worth the hike.

Upward incline the entire time with some Lookout spots along the way. Some off-paved paths that looked interesting but I wasn't that brave... One wrong foot and you could slip right down the cliffs. Not much to see along the way except cacti and scary spiders in the brush. Once you reach the lookouts to the ocean it's beautiful. Deep blue and you might catch a glimpse of a whale. We saw a little baby one playing in the distance. At one of the whale watch spots there's a steep Rocky trail down to the tide pools. Wanted to do it but it was really windy and we were already pooped as it was our second hike of the day. Heard they are a must see though. Saw tiny people down there floating in them.

steep stairs at the end, quite slippery roots when wet, best when dry conditions. spectacular view from the top! definitely don't bring dogs or young kids

Pretty ridge hike with amazing vegetation changes. The trail is marked in places where the footpath is unclear by ties on trees or paint. The trail is easy-moderate until you pass the grove of pines and picnic tables. Avoid this hike if it rained-- descending some parts would be dangerous and undoable if slick with mud. Otherwise, this is a safe hike with no treacherous points.

The best part of the hike is the last leg, where the green vegetation, blue sky, and red dirt take on high contrast, psychedelic colors. You'll catch views before and behind you once you reach the top. We completed this hike in about 2.5-3 hours. No crowd on weekdays. Overall a beautiful and rewarding hike.

Nice trail

By far the best hike I have done so far in Hawaii!!! I will not discourage anyone from doing this hike but please know that there will be some climbing to get to the top of the peaks. I only did two but next time I come back I will finish the trail. It is challenging but worth every step you take.

The first half of this trail is a little boring but it does get more interesting after the “official” end. It’s a neat one to take people on though because it does show different plants, etc. I’ve seen smaller dogs do this one all the way to the peak! There are ropes at parts for the humans :)

Quite a ridge, great views...more. than steady incline.

The path past end of trail is quite intense. The ridge is less than 24" and there are 8-10 ropes for technical climbs. Recommend crampons and gloves.

This trail is rated appropriately taking it all the way to Mt Olympus.

Super fun, super beautiful hike. I had wanted to do this for years, ever since I was a little kid riding over the Pali. It did not disappoint and I’ve gone back several times. Avoid if too wet because it can get muddy and people have been seriously injured. But otherwise it’s a fun few hours. The views from the peaks are fantastic and (most) of the tricker parts have ropes to help.

Gorgeous sunrise views!! Very crowded in the mornings so make sure you come EARLY to get parking if you want to see the sunrise. First lookout is maybe 15 min in and the dawn view is already good from there if you want to stop at that point and just chill.

Brief trail, great views. The first time I went I accidentally missed the puka (walked right over it—when you reach the tall rock face you need to u-turn left and head down to the next level to see it) and went up to the next peak instead. If you are comfortable with ropes and heights that’s not a bad add on to this trail.

Terrific hike!

Nice trail that can be connected to other trails to make it a loop.

Very nice hike and beautiful summit view. The trail was not very muddy, but after a rain it may get very slippery in some steeper sections. Overall it was a rewarding hike.

Nice afternoon hike. I wouldn't rate it hard, rather moderate. The view from the top was great!

We parked on residential Nawiliwili St off of Highway 72 and took the shortcut up to the trail. You’ll find the shortcut after the last house on the right side, where there’s also a large grate, a drainage ditch, and a street sign that says Begin Centerline Rumble Strip.

After reaching the paved trail, turn right and head uphill awhile. You’ll eventually pass two different wide dirt areas (basically old lava flows) to the left that lead down the hill (before you reach the end of the paved road). Don’t forget this is a loop trail, so it doesn’t matter which path you go down first - just head down and hug the ocean all the way around Koko Head and you’ll loop back up to the paved trail. The dirt paths are a little slippery and steep so watch your footing!

Absolutely gorgeous views the entire way!

It’s a great hike with great views! Be sure to take water because it can get very hot.
The hike can be done as an out and back or a loop by continuing past Pillbox #2 and hiking the ridge. The trail will dump you out on Luika Place. CAUTION!!! The trail gets really steep and narrow, the last 1000 feet or so. If it recently rained, forget about going as the trail will get slick and muddy.

It is a great hike that gives you an amazing view of Waimānalo and if you look back you can see town. Bring water because it can get hot if it is a sunny day. When you get close to the top there isn’t as much shade also.

very fun trail. it can be very muddy and dangerous. great views and a nice challenge

Well that was fun! I hiked it with my parents (50s) me (30yo). It’s officially their first Hawaii hike in the books! It was both challenging but doable. It’s definitely muddy, I don’t know why we even bothered trying to avoid the mud on the first half of the hike... getting covered is pretty inevitable, haha. We did go on a cloudy day though. So we didn’t get to see that incredible 360° view from the top, it was just misty. But it was very green and lush and had incredible views on the way up!! This one was a great one!
