This trail was very beautiful. Lots of breathtaking views and it is not a hard hike. The trail can be really muddy so bring shoes you don't mind getting dirty.

great undergrowth and tropical forest views, not many vista views

11/10/2018-Started around 0800 and came across 4 groups of hikers (total of about 16 people). We managed to find a stall in the parking lot and finally got to see the streams after a good rain! So awesome! It was drizzling most of the time and only came down a little harder for a few minutes of our trek out.

A great trail for us and our pups. Slightly muddy in some areas but overall not particularly challenging while offering great views. Also not too crowded!

the trail itself was very difficult to find and it was quite apparent that many hikers found different ways to get to the falls which were well worth it!

beautiful ocean view!

I loved this hike. The view at the top of the ridge was well worth it. BUT. This trail IS and/or can be very difficult. I had a relatively good route up and only slowed down at one part with tree roots and the many stairs toward the top, however I would definitely recommend either shoes with good traction or even hiking boots! The route going down, on the other hand, due to being tired and rain while I was going up.. was very difficult. It got significantly more muddy and slippery. I would not recommend this hike to anyone that does not have experience in hiking or someone looking for a fun hike. It can easily turn into not so fun!

My recommendations:

1. Shoes with traction or hiking boots
2. Lots of water
3. Start early! It gets hot! And it’s not a super quick hike. You’ll wanna get done before sundown.
4. Travel with a buddy! There are some dangerous spots. Always have a bud to be by your side!
5. Positive attitude (it is a bit difficult! Keep your eyes toward the sky!)

Great easy trail with an amazing waterfall at the end! Second half was a little steep but nothing a hiking newbie couldn’t handle. It is on private property but as long as you’re respectful it isn’t a problem.

Wow! This trail is awesome. Dress to get wet. Bring about a camelback’s worth of water. Bring some high calorie snacks. Don’t wear shoes you don’t want saturated in rich brown mud. There are parts of the trail that made me wish I had cleats on my shoes. The lower part of the hike can be pretty hot, but the peaks are relatively cool because of the breeze. If it is overcast or raining then it will feel great, but the mud will be even slicker. Kids can make it to the waterfalls, but they would have to be pretty touch to complete the rest. Safe travels!

Not too difficult, but definitely you will need a hiking boots. Gets slippery after the rain. No scenic views, since you are going through the woods. However the waterfall is amazing.

Logs by order of Mountain Ray.

At the falls right now. My boys, 5 and 7, love doing this hike. Love this hike!!!

This was a moderately challenging hike. We are a fit couple who needs adventure, so turning back at the picnic table was not for us. After the table, it is mainly a service road, so not as scenic, until you get to the top. Great fun, not too steep.

Just climb up from the base of the third waterfall, cross it a couple of times, and you will come to the crater rim.

I only wish it had more signs. I had a hard time finding my way back to the road after I was done.

This was a pretty challenging hike, especially after some solid rainfall in the morning. Would definitely recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes, as a lot of the trail is muddy and wet—as a result it is very slick. The different terrains as you make your way up in elevation is a cool part of this hike. The stairs up to the top were particularly frightening for us, however definitely worth the view. Will admit we did this one on a whim and were a little unprepared in terms of gear, water, and bug spray, but when prepared it is definitely a good one. This was our last of our trip and it sent us out with a bang!

Hiked it counter clockwise and got to the base of the third waterfall lost the trail from here and had to turn back the way we came. This trail is beautiful and quite rewarding, but is very wet, muddy, slow going, and can be VERY dangerous. Pack lots of water and snacks and start early. DO NOT hike this one alone.

Hiked the ridge after the valley. Total miles - 8.06. Fairly wet and muddy with both hikes. The views atop the ridge are awesome.....from Diamond Head thru Hanauma Bay and Koko head, across Makapu Pt and all the way to the Moks and K-bay.

May ready for the stairs - thanks Sierra club for keeping those maintained.

Live here and a well experienced hiker

Simple tips:
- Research before going on this hike.
- Or go with someone that has done it before.
- Know the short loop back; so you don’t have to back track down the 3 waterfalls again (this is if you’re not doing the whole crater)

This is NOT a maintained trail. Be safe

took an hour to get out to the point and an hour back. easy hiking as it is mostly off road trails. perfect for sunsets and you can see monk seals at the point.

Such a beautiful hike, ended up being a little over 6 miles total, but definitely worth the distance to see the furthest point West and the rest of the Western Ridge. What a feeling to have the mountains on one side of you and the ocean on the other.

It’s a great hike for beginners. Half way through you have a really pretty view of the H3.

Extremely muddy and super long.. not as rewarding as other hikes in Hawaii.

This is a pretty easy, cool trail with many different sections and cool plants. The bamboo forest is really interesting to walk through. It's good to go once or twice for a quick, easy nature hike.

love the hike some parts of the trail are very misleading tho, overall very nice and would do it again

It rained the day before. The trail was extremely muddy and slick. Definitely recommend having good hiking shoes for this trail just for the sake of traction. Lots of roots and big branches you have to duck underneath towards the middle of the hike. The view is amazing. We had a decent breeze. But very humid. Started off around 9 am. It was about 89 degrees when we finished. You just hit these pockets of hot air during the hike. Bring a bottle of water with you. Not sure if I’d do this one again. The view is gorgeous but I personally don’t like this much mud on my hikes. Call me dainty if ya want. Ha.

Protip: make sure to use bug spray. We sprayed before the hike and I still managed about a dozen bites. Imagine if I didn’t have any spray on.

Try Kalauao Falls hike or Aiea Ridge Trail if you want something more challenging. The Aiea Ridge Trail has some scenic point along the way.
