My wife and I walked this trail with our dogs. It wasn't a tough walk, but the trail surface changes a lot so its worthy of hiking boots, and the trail was easy to find and follow all the way to the falls, and who doesn't like walking along a river. It's pretty even late in the year and one area had a lot of wild grapes that were delicious. The creek size waterfall was flowing well and cascaded about 30ft down the side of the hill, so mission accomplished. We followed the trail for about a 100 yards past the falls but it got pretty tight and then became hard to follow so we decided to head back. It was a pleasant walk and we even saw a bear about a 1/4 mile from the trailhead on the way back, and he wanted nothing to do with us. I would say we might do it again in the early spring but at that time of year the creek may make it hard to get access the waterfall.

Great hike, easy to moderate. Unfortunately the mine is now blocked off, however, there are many accommodations along the trails including porta potties and tables.

Nice 4h hike, decent views of the river

It is a difficult trail coming out but the rewards of the swimming holes at the bottom are worth it!
Just take a lot of water with you and I don’t recommend doing in high temps and much of the trail is uncovered.

Tuesday, October 2, 2018: weather was supposed to be cool and possibly rainy- not so. The reviews are correct that it gets hot along the trail, although there was quite a bit of shade. It isn't a hike I'd like to do in the summer months; there are plenty of swimming holes in Northern CA closer to my home. It's more of a walk than a hike anyway as there were only a few uphills, etc. Deer, bear, and maybe cougar tracks seen in the dirt trail. The road in was gravel and washboard but didn't need 4 wheel drive. I was fine in my Fiesta. Did not see anyone else along the trail. 1 hour in, 1 hour out. Overall a fun walk and a lovely day.

Beautiful views!

SEPTEMBER/2018: Awesome day to hit this trail. The weather was perfect and it wasn’t as crowded like the last time. It’s about one and a half hours out/in trip. The waterfall/dam was so beautiful and there were plenty of rainbows.

great challenging hike with great views.

Hiked the trail in May. All five of us and two dogs were covered in tics. I recommend just enjoying the river and forgo the hike. We hiked to the end and never could find the waterfall. It was a disappointment.

Even though it is dry in late September the waterfall was still active. There are some nice water holes to cool off in too. Good short hike, with a rough drive in. Drive out was easier since we were going uphill. Coming back in the spring!

The trail itself is beautiful, and though I would not describe the views as spectacular, the jaunt itself is pleasant and relaxing. I took the trail from the (very low) underpass to the right of the trailhead sign all the way to it's finish at the fire road (there is an end of trail marker there to let you know). A little anticlimactic since there was no sweeping view at the end. When I do it again, i will likely stop at the picnic tables located after the bridge. Great place to snack and recharge before heading back.

Great trail! lots of mosquitoes though. Easy walk, level and shaded.

Beautiful morning hiking!!!! I thought we’d be closer to the river, but we still had great views. Would be a easy hike for kids

The trailhead is annoying because there is not convenient parking. Very pretty views but trail can be very narrow and uneven at times. I would call this more moderate because you can loose your footing.

this is a fantastic trail to take young kids who are just starting to get into nature walks without being in a stroller. it is long but easy for them to enjoy and explore. the trail has several little creekbeds that are filled with salamanders. the walk bridgws and paths are also nice for individuals who have difficulty walking. bridges have benches and great views.

This was a very beautiful trail. If you use the map it’s pretty easy to stay on track but you can adventure off if you want to as well. The sun will hit you for most of the hike so be prepared with enough water for everyone. I did this one without my 1.5 year old and I would recommend leaving the babies at home. Dogs had a blast but you’ll want to bring enough water for them too.

Nice wooded hike, along the water for a lot of it. It was more of an easy hike for us but we didn’t hike up the hill after the bridge. Instead we went straight along the water to the lower part of the lake. The end was pretty but disappointing because the water is low and we couldn’t hike to it unless we wanted to climb over rocks and drift wood. We should have conquered the hill, it probably had lake access but it was getting late. We took our Boston’s and they had lots of streams to drink from.

Great trail. For this out-of-shape old lady it was more than moderate but still doable

I went on a Monday (no reservations required on weekdays!) and there were still plenty of people on the trails. Only downside is the drinking fountains are no longer working. One of my friends planned to fill her water bottle up there only to find that out. Bring water with you!

Just another great day for hike at Auburn area. Crowded on parking cars and on the trail. Nice view's of spilling dam water at the end . like this trail as exercise and nice surrounding of forest atmosphere. Recomend to others.

Amazing views of river, can be very hot midday and very little shade. The way there is mostly downhill which makes it very arduous coming back. The river is crystal clear and so refreshing and calm to swim in. Encountered 20-30 people in 4 hours.

This was a beautiful place to ride our horses and there was some shade, wide trails, and access to water at the falls. However, the access road to get in and out was absolutely awful. 5 Miles of loose, bumpy, rattily gravel that at times could only drive 5mph or under. Even had to use 4WD at one point because our truck tires were slipping. Very rough ride on the body, and worrying about the horses, and for that reason we will not go again.

Great hike. I like to do this as a training hike followed by a swim. This is not a super hard hike and it can be done in either direction. I have a video of swimming in the river at the park at Chris and Bobs adventure channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uyGtgFQLEM&t=16s

Epic short hike. Best part is the swimming hole at the bottom. Just remember it can be very hot here in the summer. We filmed the swimming hole and you can find it on my Youtube channel Chris and Bobs adventure channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udowQ5aASpQ&t=14s

It was great hike. Almost all hike is by the water!

Just a heads up "no dogs" sign at the trailhead, but you will usually see a few.

Make reservations on weekends !!!

Loved this hike, nice easy walk to the falls. Dogs loved it and enjoyed the shade spots for a few breaks. Would highly recommend

This trail is more a walking trail rather than a hiking trail. It’s very flat, mostly shaded, and provides a pretty nice view of the South Yuba river from above. It’s not a crowded trail since more people opt to spend time down by the river. The wooden bridges were a nice touch as well.

From what I saw, it’s an in-out trail. The only drawback was having to avoid dog poop which was not moved from the trail.
