Hiking

Be sure to have AllTrails downloaded before you head onto the trail! My SO and I did this trail counterclockwise on 4/21/21 around 4pm. The trail was barely marked and was covered in snow and slush. We lost the trail immediately. Careful where you step, as we fell through the snow multiple times. The view at Taggert Lake was gorgeous but the rest of the trail was tricky and hard to navigate. Maybe better during the summer.

Walking

I recommend either wearing shoes with good traction or getting something to go over the shoe. The snow was packed in some parts but not so much in others.

HikingGreat!

tons of traffic for the first half (especially if you go through jenny lake) but once you get past inspiration point it thins out. (sidenote: saw 2 moose and a bear so make sure to look out)

The trial to the lake is packed well and easy with just boots or spikes if you need. I would recommend a hiking pole. The trail back cuts more through the middle of the loop. Follow the foot steps and it’s pretty clear. It’s starting to get pretty slushy so be prepared for weak snow.

We went counter clockwise and the way up to the lake was really nice. We didn’t need snowshoes for the first half but oh let me tell you once you start going down the steep downhill the trail is extremely hard to locate and the snow is not packed at all. We followed many footstep trails and were only saved by downloading this map. Many times though the trail on the map was impassable and we had to follow the footsteps down by the creek and the ground was very unstable. Be careful out there on the way back

Great trail. Used spikes, did not need snowshoes. Definitely a little confusing because some of the markers/signs were covered in snow—accidentally took a fire road some way up before realizing we were headed the wrong way. Once on the trail, we also accidentally went towards Bradley lake but it got pretty hard to tell where to go. Made it back towards taggart loop and onto the beautiful lake! Saw a female moose on the trail. Overall, really great winter hike, and lots of people on the trail!

Beautiful loop! We went counterclockwise and the segment to the lake wasn’t too difficult with the snow, but the rest of the loop was slow and wet. I recommend downloading the maps as the trails get a little difficult to follow at some points.

Glorious stunning views on a day that went from sunny to cloudy during the afternoon. I went to the lake and back, didn’t do the loop. Glad to have my snow shoes and poles. Many people in hiking boots, a few w running shoes. Loved the melting snows forming creeklets and pools of water, forested pines wafting in the breeze, tops of smaller ones peaking out from snow. Compelling rocks in an open meadow.

If you’re planning to do this trail now or likely anytime in April, you MUST have snowshoes, trekking poles, and proper snow clothes. You will be tempted many times to follow others footsteps. It will lead you astray if you aren’t paying very close attention to the map. If you don’t have the right gear, hike to the lake and then turn around and go back, don’t do the full loop. If you have the right gear, trek on and be safe!

First portion is a breeze & absolutely beautiful! Once you get to the lake I wish we would’ve turned around. I’d advice you NOT to do the loop unless you have snow shoes. It is very very easy to get off the path resulting in waist deep snow.

A trail with great views! We got off the trail several times which made it hard to navigate through the deep snow!

HikingGreat!

This is one of my all time favorite trails. Start right at sunrise to get a great chance of catching a glimpse of moose and deer. Do the loop counter clockwise for the best views on your way to the lake. If you start early enough you get a chance at absolute serenity without the crowds. The image of the mountains with this pristine lake in the foreground is seared into my memory. This is one of only a handful of places in the world I can close my eyes and still see.

We went in the early spring and while beautiful, the trail is a bit difficult to follow. Not well marked for snow season. For anyone that is comfortable navigating via gps/topographical maps, I was never worried but it stressed my brother out a bit. Be ready to bushwhack a little if going in winter. You can see on my recording that it wasn’t exactly... on trail because winter made some parts difficult to follow. Overall, if you have hiking boots that are snow ready and winter gear, you should be golden even as a journeyman like myself. I recommend downloading the map in winter.

Glorious! Even in a snow storm; if that's your thing. We accidentally went left, off trail, like many others. Folks were coming/going from the left, where there were gates, nearly buried in snow. Never saw the TINY sign saying "Taggart Lake ->". In one of my pix, my husband is at this fork in the path, pointing to the right-bound, correct route. So the left route gets steep. It's essentially a short cut though. On our way back, we used the map to stay on the official part of this trail. And it's a much gentler path. Too, if you go right, there is later a TINY wooden sign saying "<- Trail". Folks were XC skiing across the Taggart Lake. We continued around the lake to the right and made it half way to Bradley Lake. But without being able to find the switchbacks, we eventually turned around. So then we went left, around Taggart Lake in attempt to complete the loop. Fail. You have to cross a bridge. But it had several feet of snow, no tracks, and was too narrow for comfort. So we continued hiking along the water as it turned into a river. Too in this area, parts of the lake were melted. So we didn't want to cross. Eventually, following along the water and using the map, it took us back to the main trail; the right side of the loop. To and from Taggart Lake was pretty fine in snow boots. Snowshoes and poles would have been helpful heading towards Bradley Lake, and going to the left of Taggart Lake, off trail.

Not easy without snowshoes. Download map!!! Trail is clear for some parts but not for others if you’re switching trails- we did Taggart Lake trail in but wanted to do the full loop. Somehow missed the turn and hiked a mile more than planned heading towards Bradley Lake. Backside was very very steep from Taggart to the parking lot on the Beaver Creek trail. Beautiful views but was very hard with the snow not packed in only hiking boots.
